Bedroom Pop from Henry Nowhere

California native Henry Nowhere has spent the last several years as a member of Day Wave, and while a paycheck is all well and good, he couldn’t resist the opportunity to craft his own tunes. His first single has him working over this casual bedroom beat; it’s surprising how the mere mention of his locale evokes waves in the movement/propulsion of the beats. He throws in this light guitar line, more dreamy than jangle, though perhaps meeting in the middle ground of the two. Be on the lookout for his debut EP real soon…I’d happily take five more songs like this any day.

Missed This Matthew Lee Cothran Ditty

Somehow this track slid by my DMs, but not to worry; I’m here to make amends. As I listen to this wonderful track from Matthew Lee Cothran, I can’t help but be appreciative of his solo work…especially after he called it a day with Coma Cinema. It’s a pretty simple song, seemingly, but the special way that Cothran turns a line always charms me; I’m partial to the line ” we’ll get there together/on the other side of all this pain we feel.” It’s great to see Matthew doing everything on his own terms and his own way; it will always be special to me. Looks like he has a new mini-album titled My First Love Mends My Final Days, dropping next Friday and featuring the gem below.

Pinch Points Drop Debut EP

Recently stumbled across this brand new Pinch Points EP, and its stuck with me ever since. The Melbourne based four piece plays that sort of proto-punk that has you stuck between a solid bedroom pogo and a circle pit. The whole EP is sharp as nails, with standout “Jellybrain” sure to have you coming back to the band for more. Plus, there’s a slight political undercurrent, though not overdone, so you can go merrily on your way without grasping at the message, if you so choose. The Mechanical Injury EP is available now, and streaming below!

New Rocker from Loose

Loose is a brand new act out of Portland, but the various members all have quite a pedigree of their own. Together they’ve just announced their debut LP, pulling in from all sorts of areas to get me excited. There’s an obvious element that definitely wears the badge of the Pacific Northwest, be it the way the melody is used or the sounds as a whole. But, they also throw in these math rock-y spasms, not unlike Pinback, though here it’s pushed much faster and angrier. Exciting things on the horizon from this act…hear for yourself.

Downer Pop from Mope City

The name Mope City alone suggests the down-trodden, and I bet the band doesn’t mind that one bit. In the guitar sounds, you have a sort of laid-back grunge to it, though dropped in tone so that it seems to merely crawl through your speakers. You’ll find the vocals steady and solemn, with little intonation…that’s until the Amaya lends her voice to the track. It’s that slight little touch that elevates the tune into the realm of pop sensibility. This song will appear on the Aussie act’s News From Home, which will drop this October via Tenth Court.

Enjoying This Tuung Track

Tuung is back with the whole OG lineup for the first time in over a decade, and it looks like they’re right back in the proverbial groove. Their latest single recalls late nights on dance floors in the early 00s; it’s got a rhythmic pulse working throughout, filled out by various electronic details. What makes the song so fun is the vocal harmonies that work in and out of the tune; it gives you the feeling of exuberance that can only be shared by pumping fists and stomping legs amongst friends in a dingy club somewhere. The group will release Songs You Make at Night via Full Time Hobby on August 24th.

Fun Pop Number from Boy Romeo

There’s something about this Boy Romeo tune that’s just inescapable. It has this weird funky groove to it, though it’s jagged and sharp, like some bastard child of early Elvis Costello. That sets up the song for a steady roll in the hay with rise and falling pop vocals; each time they’re backed by a nice little wash of atmospheric keyboards. I have a feeling you’re going to have a hell of a day if you just put this on nice and loud; the new EP will drop next week via Mt.St.Mtn. Records.

Jason Bemis Lawrence Releases Ballad

Jason Bemis Lawrence has spent a lot of time behind the scenes of some incredible acts, like Dean & Britta, but now that he’s stepped out into the world on his own…we should turn our attention there. He offers us a solemn bad, built upon his experience as a youth in the continuous ride that is Las Vegas; it forced him to look upon the concept of individuals and what their lives look by in their passing. I love the contrast of his voice with that of Heather Wood Broderick, allowing an added layer of warmth to ooze into the confines of the track. I’d also like to note that I’m fascinated by the lonely piano somewhere in the distance of this track. His debut solo outing, Another Hotel Hallway, will be out on September 7th.

Genuine Leather Drop New Single + Release Show

We’ve long been behind Austin act Genuine Leather, but the group has been fairly quiet since the release of Brunch in 2016. But, today they return with a brand new single and celebratory show at Cheer Up Charlies. The new song has a horror-themed video to accompany it, with just a bit of fun added in to match the song’s pop desires. Just sit back and let those crunchy guitars burst through your speakers, wait for the vocal hooks to wash over you, then rinse and repeat. The band celebrate the new single with a great line-up at Cheer Up Charlies featuring Shivery Shakes, Pollen Rx and Robby; the band will have some old school TVs up to, streaming the new video with headphone sets attached for your listening pleasure.

Funky Number from Teddy Glass

This Teddy Glass jam ran just the other day, and I’ve been busy, so I’m just now getting it up for your ears. The duo is the new project of Peter from Hello Wheels and Josh from our very own Marmalakes…so of course we’re going to let you jam it out. Of course Josh is going to lay down some moody rhythm section work, pumped up in the opening moments by some fuzzy guitar. That’s all before Peter settles in with a lighter guitar approach and his soulful bellow, eventually breaking into an almost animalistic growl, accented by a sweet backing vocal chorus. The two have completed their new album, Nights and Weekends, which they’ll drop on August 24th.
