Red Sleeping Beauty Release New Single

Two things that I adore unite together in this joyful track from Red Sleeping Beauty; you get indiepop and you get an homage to soccer. This track is being labeled as the unofficial Swedish World Cup anthem, thus the title of the tune. Heavy on the beats and high on harmonies is a sure-fire way to get right into my listening rotation. Hopefully this track can hold you over until the World Cup kicks off in a few weeks…or until the band wraps up their new studio album, which is rumored to be out this Fall.

Go Fawn over Margot

It’s probably easy in the guitar-pop stage of the music world we’re in to make comparisons to Real Estate, but I don’t think you’ll find a single band as on point in that style as South London’s Margot. You’ll immediately notice the way the guitars have this sharp intermingling in your ears; you’re going to feel like you’re cruising down the highway with a huge freaking grin on your face. What really sold me on the group was the softness of the vocals; they seem feathery in comparison to the guitar work, lending a dreamier quality to the sound than one would first offer up. A debut EP is on its way shortly!

New Track from Why Bonnie

We were fortunate enough to have Why Bonnie play our SXSW show this year; they wowed us and the many in attendance, assuring their steady rise. And after their In Water EP, the band are ready to drop 5 more tunes for you. Our first listen has the band offering up a more billowy dream number, casually letting the guitars build into this huge wall of atmospherics behind Blair’s stellar vocal performance. It’s great to see the band building on their early success and fleshing out their sound even more. If this band isn’t on your radar already, I don’t know how to help you. But, Nightgown will be out on cassette courtesy of Sports Day Records on June 20th.

Sungod Announces New LP

Austin’s Sungod have just announced the release of a new full length titled Wave Refraction; it’s of course being released by powerhouse label Holodeck Records. The lead single from the LP is “Hypnotism,” which features the digitally hypnotic video we’ve got streaming below. When turning to the music, perhaps you’d be best served to combine two elements of modern indie that we’re all familiar with at this point. One, you’ve got the instrumental electronica that all Holodeck fans love: two, you’ve got this Grizzly Bear underbelly beneath. It ends up leaving you with this blissed out expansiveness, like traveling through space, or so I imagine. The album will drop on August 24th.

Wilder Maker Release New Video

Brooklyn’s Wilder Maker are prepping Zion, their forthcoming LP for Northern Spy Records, and they’ve just released a new video from the album. There’s a bunch of things to love about the video, not the least of which is the music. The band employ a careful approach, letting the song build upon itself rather than filling in every inch of space with sonic touches; it leaves the song open and welcoming. That’s perfect, as it allows for Katie Von Schleicher to offer up an expected vocal performance, smoky and soulful. The video itself features a party scene played out in reverse, with the world’s tiniest ping son table and a plant spinning records. Look for Zion to drop on July 13th.

Tony Molina Announces New LP

What a wonderful week for Slumberland Records; they announced a new Smokescreens album…and now we get news of Tony Molina‘s follow up to Dissed and Dismissed. As per always, Tony seems to craft these delightful numbers that are over in less than a few minutes. But, once you’ve delved in, you feel like you’ve been listening to Molina on repeat for hours…and in fact, you probably will. This song also feels more bare, just sort of stripped down to the core essentials that maximize the emotional pull. Kill the Lights will be out on July 27th, so put a few bucks aside for another great LP.

Go See Tres Oui, Talkies and more Tonight @ Cheer Ups

Looking around at various spots, and it looks like this show this evening over at Cheer Ups is the best place to maximize your good times/good music. For starters, Talkies are celebrating their Tape Release tonight, so you should go on over and support a local band. But, if you’re not one to support local music, at least cheer on all the bands, as Nothing Song has gotten together a pretty solid bill; you’ve got Tres Oui, Talkies (of course), Springtime and the Changes, and the Hermits. All of these are reason alone to venture out, but I’ll throw in a hit or two below to further entice you. Doors are at 9!

Delighting Pop from Melby

Everyone’s all about that PNKSLM over in Sweden, but another label that’s really been doing it for me lately is fellow Stockholm posse, Rama Lama Records. They’ve just set up another great release with this new single from Melby. The band definitely fits into our modern evolution of dream/indie pop stylings, though I think there’s just a hint more fragility in the voice…it’s almost like a crystalline object you don’t want to drop for fear of shattering. However, the song really excels during the chorus where the pace is picked up, guitars ring just a bit louder and the bass bobs along. For real, this song rules.

Cloudberry Preps Release from Okama Flannel Boy

I promise you that when you listen to the new single from Okama Flannel Boy, you’ll likely place the music somewhere over in the UK, perhaps even Scotland where the shuffling jangle of guitars grew in popularity. But alas, OFB is actually from Mexico City, which makes the fact that Fernando Torres is crafting such joyous indiepop all the more enticing. We owe that discovery purely to Roque, who might be one of the last gatekeepers of great indiepop out there; he’ll be releasing the new four song 7″ from OFB on his Cloudberry Records label, coming some time this summer!
