New Music from Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton

Lachlan Denton is one of the multi-talented (and hyper involved) members of the Ocean Party, but today we bring you a song he’s worked on with his good friend Emma Russack (who has quite a pedigree of her own). Emma takes the vocal focus on this track, though Lachlan does enter during the chorus with a warm backing line. Musically, the track’s a subdued number, sublime guitar strumming with a piano line that works atop a gentle percussive element. It’s a relaxed vibe, discussing the pros/cons of singledom versus life in a relationship, but for those just hearing the two for the first time, you’ll walk away warmed by the talent presented before you. Look for the two to drop a full-length later on in the year.

Wedding Announce New 7 Inch

Don’t be scared off by the distortion ringing out when you press play; it only takes a matter of moments for Wedding to turn on the pop charm. Quick drum punctuation allows for the group to enter the scene with their slightly smoky group vocal delivery; it sort of reminds me of a weird place where Woods were happily popping off to Supergrass (then again I’ve just been jamming a whole lot of Supergrass lately). In under two minutes you cruise through the track, with just enough grit to keep you interested; the band have just announced they’ll be releasing a new flexidisc 7″ via Art Is Hard Records and their Eyes & Ears zine.

Punky Ditty from Blues Lawyer

Can’t say that we know too much about Blues Lawyer, though we know the band is about set to release their debut Guess Work via the trustworthy label, Emotional Response. We do know that Dick Stusso is involved, as well as a few other members from the San Francisco scene. This track comes in with angular chords, matter of fact vocal delivery, with a slight female accompaniment; it’s like Ought just decided to write straightforward hits with a heavier dosage of pop sensibility. It ends up sounding sort of old school, and that, in and of itself is rather refreshing; the album drops April 20th.

New Music from Beach Skulls

Beach Skulls have been on my radar since they dropped Slow Grind (2016), but they’ll soon be making it on everyone’s radar, as they’ve just inked a deal with super hot label PNKSLM to release the group’s next LP. Our first listen has us thinking along the lines of beach-goth stylings of Growlers, though this feels more centralized around melody; the usage of light “aahs” in the background provide a blanket of pop sensibility throughout the various verses. It’s energetic, and just a bit hazy, which is probably the way we’re all starting off our Friday. Look for Las Dunas to drop June 1st!

Poppy Surf from Delsbo Beach Club

Delsbo Beach Club are bringing in precisely what one would expect from the band’s name; they offer a poppy take on that Cali style beach vibe. Except, this group hails from Sweden, which is perhaps why there’s a dominating pop sensibility that runs throughout the tune. The vocals have a bit of distorted effect, which effectively encourages the ears to come closer to the speaker. With that, you’ll find a natural spring to your step created by delectable guitar notes. In the chorus there’s a slight turn away from the beach to a more intimate croon; it’s a swing of sorts, crafted in an indiepop manner. This single is full of promise, and it’s available now via Rama Lama Records.

Your Favorite Colour Drops Debut Single

You might not know Your Favorite Colour, but here’s to hoping the music finds its way into your home. The backstory, and one reason for my adoration, is that Ben, the songwriter here, is from The Lodger…a band so vastly underrated that its criminal. These two tunes have slight hints at the the past sound, though they’re slightly more subdued in regards to energy; it closely resembles some of the stuff The Lucksmiths were known for crafting. Central to the power will be the melody, though I like the quiet of “A Quick Goodbye,” sincere and intimate, even as extra layers billow through your speakers. Not sure what this means for the future, but for now, another great reason to celebrate Thursday. Also, it gives me reason to go back and listen to THIS GEM.

Give Trainwreck Department A Listen

Trainwreck Department is a bedroom project of Danish songwriter Jacob Faurholt, and the last few weeks his tunes have been getting a heavy rotation at my house. There’s something that feels vital to the current musical climate, though there also are some musical moments that feel completely indifferent to expectations. I love “Doctor Please,” though songs like “The Stars are Shooting at Us” carry a heavier vibe, particularly in the chorus; you’ll also find intimate strumming in “Carousel,” giving you bits of everything you’re looking for. Plus, all these tracks are fairly short, built for quick consumption in the current climate. Stream the No. 1 EP below.

Celebrate Hefner’s Debut 20 Years Later

If you have spent any time at all on this site, you surely are aware of my affinity for

, and all his projects. Most recently, it’s been with the Hayman Kupa Band, but it all began with a band called Hefner. It’s possible that they were too far ahead of their time, featuring twanging jangling guitars, clever wordplay and hooks you can’t avoid. WIAIWYA, one of my fave labels in the UK just announced they’ll be re-releasing Breaking God’s Heart, the band’s debut LP. Give this song a listen, and perhaps you’ll see why 20 years on there’s still a huge interest in the band and their work. The reissue drops this July!

Another Great Tune from En Attendant Ana

Sure, it’s just the beginning of April, but I’m going out on a limb and reserving a spot for this new En Attendant Ana LP in my personal Top 20 of 2018. The album is ten tracks of non-stop insatiable pop, with more enough grit to put them just outside the indiepop arena. Here, you can here the guitar work pushing fast, while the vocals cast another sonic image, giving off something slightly prettier. It’s slight, but just the faintest hint of contrast throughout this song, and the Lost and Found LP, keeps your interested time and time again. If, like me, you can’t wait for this album, it will be available on CD/Digi on Friday, but drops on vinyl in June…all via Trouble In Mind.

More New Nathan K

Just last month I dropped news of new Nathan K music on the way, and now we’ve got another single from Nathan as he preps the release of the Bridges EP. On this new tune, there’s a fragility and intimacy brought by the vocal delivery, lying somewhere between Rogue Wave and Death Cab. Lyrically, the song seems to leave the listener with a glimmer of hope, despite the morose concept present in the song’s title “If I Die.” For me, the ultimate reward, as per usual, is that Nathan just crafts these really great pop songs; he’s not doing anything outlandish or gimmicky, just relying upon melody and hooks, and I love it. Look for the new EP on April 20th.
