Girls Names Ready New Album

Oh Girls Names, how we’ve missed you. The long time ATH fave has just announced their return with this dense new single, opening with this brooding post-punk for almost two minutes before vocals even enter the picture. Honestly, there’s not a whole lot of movement following that, but I love the group’s ability to evoke maximum emotion with such simple structures. I can even hear a slight King Krule influence on the way the vocals come across during the verses. It’s an interesting entry into an already stellar catalog, so I look forward to seeing what comes out of it all when Stains on Silence is released on June 15th via Tough Love.

Sam Evian Announces New Album

Sam Evian, nee Sam Owens, originally came to my attention on Need You, his collaboration with the adored Chris Cohen. Today, news comes our way that there will be a new record from Sam, titled You, Forever. Our first listen has these softened vocals churning throughout, solidifying the track’s natural melody. But, Owen’s seems willing to throw down on some jams too, building some extensive solos into this track (and some sax too). It ends up being a crunchy hook-laden jam, something you might expect from a Kurt Vile in the early days. This new LP will drop June 1st via Saddle Creek.

Another Track From Connections

If you’re one of those that think’s guitar pop is out of fashion, then perhaps you should take a moment to sit back and listen to this new track from Connections. There’s a slight jangling shuffle to the guitar, while the rhythm section steadies the ship. It’s like a super casual Teenage Fanclub just came over to play you their demos without throwing full force on the distortion pedal; even the melodic presentation of the vocals harkens to the purest of power pop. Don’t worry, they throw in a quick little guitar solo, just to show you they can. The band will drop Foreign Affairs via Trouble In Mind on May 11th.

Angular Pop from Deeper

I’ve spent the great part of the last few years trying to convince everyone I know how great Omni is…looks like I can now add another like-minded act to that list with this new Deeper tune. It’s got angular chords seemingly working against the rhythm section at all times; the vocals are delivered in an almost spoken-word manner, meant to match syllables and beats. What’s really enthralling about this tune is how it seems to bounce between styles, dreamy at times, art rock at others…then closing with a little explorative indie rock. This tune appears on the band’s self-titled debut, which is being released via Fire Talk on May 25th.

 

Red Red Eyes Release Video for Empty Land

A few weeks back I wrote about the smoky pop beauty of Red Red Eyes, and the band are back with a video for the lead track from their new LP, Horology. The video and the song’s natural emotion evoke a sort of gothic pop underbelly; it could easily work into the realm of dream pop…if those dreams were nightmares. While Laura McMahon’s voice is remarkable, it wouldn’t have anywhere to go if it weren’t for the sonic landscape crafted behind her by musical partner Xavier Watkins. Together, they’ve crafted this brooding number that seems understated at times, but little accents pop up via trickling electronics or strong guitar twang. Get lost in this song, and the whole LP on May 18th when it’s released by WIAIWYA.

Hear Another Cozy Slippers Gem

Cozy Slippers first came on my radar a few weeks ago when Jigsaw Records put up a new single from the group’s Postcards EP. Well, good news is they’ve now offered up another fine item for your streaming pleasure. I like the tonal quality from the opening minute, almost ticking you into a post-punk vibe before settling into the rising/falling vocal harmonies that subdue any pop aficionado. They’re playful in their craft, trading hooks, dare I say, back and forth. It’s a song you’ll find hard to pull yourself away from; the Postcards EP will drop on April 20th.

Stream The Journey for the Giant Jelly Bean

What? You had no idea there was an album titled The Journey for the Giant Jelly Bean coming out? Well, it’s out now, and you can stream it. Jarebear is the new namesake for Jared from Zoltars and the Infinites…two powerhouse Austin acts; he’s taken the time over the last decade or so to craft an album of garage rock hits for both kids and their parents. The premise of the record relies upon the search for a giant jelly bean that will save the world; each song is like a perfect chapter in the grander story. You’ll have to stream it below to figure out what happens in the end. Congrats Jared!

Enjoying This New Bent Denim

Bent Denim is definitely in the ascending stages of their career, with the likes of GFP and Stereogum giving the band consistent coverage, and deservedly. There’s something nostalgic in the sound, something 2000 era Jade Tree fans would’ve definitely adored. The vocals have this fragile earnestness, yet a sense of ebbing longing that captures the emotional appeal necessary to connect with a listener. While clocking in at just under 2 minutes, there’s plenty to digest, plus you can return with ease…and you’ll want to! Town and Country will be out on May 11th.

Stream Mostly Sunny from Flowertruck

Not too long ago I posted the lead track from Flowertruck, claiming it shared some sonic similarities to Orange Juice, not to mention, it just felt fun. Now, you can take the chance on something new and stream the entirety of the Aussie band’s new LP, Mostly Sunny. Aside from the opener, there’s some swelling pop songs like “Rain,” for those who love grandiose pop. There’s some punch new-wave numbers like “New Is the Saddest Word,” letting you into the club where music’s meant to be fun. Something carefree lurks below, so go ahead and enjoy the frivolous debut from Down Under.

Love This New S. Carey Video

S. Carey‘s latest video really hits home for me, and not just musically. I used to live in Yellowstone. True story. And, I’ll admit, I wish I had Carey’s tune in my car as I drove throughout the park on errands and what not; it does perfectly match the setting and ambiance of traveling through the park. But, be warned, as they actually don’t hit the park until about the 1.5 minute mark; they go through some other locales, equally as majestic. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s just a damn good song, but I’m going to keep watching this video on repeat for a bit. You’ll find this track on the latest LP, Hundred Acres, via Jagjaguwar.
