Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Drop New Tune

After making huge waves in the US with their debut EP for Sub Pop, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever return with a brand new track. This song finds the band very much playing in line with what we’ve come to expect from the band, guitars working atop each other with melody always in the sights. The sharp turn just after the 1 minute marks is a special moment that sets up the chorus of “back on the mainland.” This song hints at great things to come, but no word on a new release. There is, however, a huge list of Spring dates all across Europe and the US, so keep your eyes peeled to see if they’re coming your way.

Wooing Release In Colour Video

Wooing is the relatively recent project of Rachel Trachtenberg, who many of you might recognize for her role as the drummer in the Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players. She’s move one, grown up and begun a project with several friends. Today, we’re here with the band’s “In Colour” video, which provides a wonderful glimpse at the music the group is concocting. The first 1.5 minutes here are intimate, softened vocals and carefully picked chords; it’s the perfect set-up for what is soon to follow. Sampled vocals and rolling drums enter the picture, changing the sonic landscape into one of experimental pop music that excites through to the end. The trio have just released their Daydream Time Machine EP via Ba Da Bing!

Catching Up with Lost Sound Tapes

Several years ago I came across Lost Sound Tapes, I felt like it specialized in the prefect blend of DIY ethics and bedroom pop. The label had a few releases in 2017, but it looks like big things are in store for fans in 2018…they’ve just announced 3 new releases. They just dropped the new Squill LP, Bury It…which can be streamed HERE. But, looking forward, they have two releases coming in February that would appreciate your ears. First, Badlands will release 10 new tracks detailing life, death, space, love and everything in between; it’s the project of Adrian Chi Tenney. Second, Family Video will release their debut full-length; it’s a charming bit of pop, seemingly drawing from the alternative vibe of the late 90s through a more more modern scope. Small labels are important, and this is one of my favorites.

Stream Guilt EP from The Ocean Party

The Ocean Party continue their ceaseless barrage of pop hits with the just released Guilt EP, available via Spunk Records. I always love everything these guys pull off together, and with this EP, I’m quite taken by the track “Out;” it has this natural sense of wonderment…listen carefully as guitar lines stretch across the song’s horizon while the vocals hang in the air. All in all, the EP has a solemn feel to it, holding onto a certain emotion that can only be described by listening to all 6 tracks in one sitting. So, now’s your chance, get at the EP below.

Slept on Ghost Music

Despite fair warning from various friends, I completely slept on Ghost Music. But, now I aim to correct that by sharing one of the standout tracks from their just recently released I Was Hoping You’d Pass by Here. This tune exemplifies everything I love in pop music; it uses a great melody, occasionally inserting darker tones, with guitars working on top of each other. It’s odd that it sounds both nostalgic and familiar at the same time. Pretty sure that I’ll be playing this album a whole lot this year, so if you’re into great pop, then stream below.

New Release from No Museums

At least once a year, we’re gifted a release by No Museums; they’re always creating, and always succeeding in crafting enjoyable tunes. Today they drop It All Begins to Feel, an exercise in brevity and hooks. Six of the seven tracks all come in at under 2 minutes, though the craftsmanship maximizes your listening in enjoyment. These are subtle pop tunes, filled with smoky vocals and great guitar work; at the moment my favorite of the 7 is “Old Projectors.” So much substance packed into an enjoyable 11 minute adventure. I’m hoping that the band will have another release for us by year’s end, so cross your fingers while you enjoy.

Pulsing Electro Pop from Club 8

For some reason, and perhaps this is all on me, but I always thought of Club 8 as a purely indiepop hit machine. Sure, they stretched the form a bit, but from what we’ve heard off their 10th album, it looks like they’re really emphasizing the club punch on this go round. This jam has this throbbing pulse, kicked up by these electronic punches. Interestingly, the notes coincide with the breathy vocal delivery, matching note for note. It’s the sort of tune where you expect to sort of lose yourself within the confines of a fog filled club, lost in the beat of song; the chorus is pretty special too. Fire will be released January 26th via Labrador.

Hinds Announce I Don’t Run

Hinds have just announced that they’ll be dropping their new record, I Don’t Run, on Mom + Pop on April 6th; they’ve done it in a fashion that’s straight to the hearts of the ATH team, with a soccer (futbol) themed video (their whole web site shares the theme if you’re so inclined). The video, and the song itself, encapsulate everything that’s great about the Spanish quartet. No matter what video they create, they always seem like they’re having one hell of a time; they make you wish you were in on the party. Plus, they always toss out a catchy lyrical nugget that has you screaming at the top of your lungs as you sing along; you can’t help yourself. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see too many folks out there having as much fun as Hinds…and that will always win me over.

Enjoy Little Star

A friend of a friend suggested I check into Little Star; I’m glad I have friends with good tastes. The Portland band have just released their Even In Dreams EP, with some sonic similarities to New Order on the opening track…though they push off in different directions as the EP progresses. For instance, “Jacks” has this airy bedroom pop quality, using a minimal set up to craft a quick emotional joy. Definitely a band to keep an eye on at the moment; you can grab the new EP from them on Bandcamp.

Paul Bergmann Wins Again

In case you missed it, Paul Bergmann made a beautiful record last year that I included in my Albums People Probably Overlooked. Rest easy, you still have time to go back, but first listen to this new entry into Paul’s on-going canon. It’s simple in structure, with Bergmann’s voice moving gently atop a walking piano line. At times, it almost sounds like the piano is going out of tune, haunted by a faint speaker hiss in the recording; it’s one of the more intimate offerings we’ve heard him created. Overall, it leaves you with a message of promise, both in life, and in Bergmann’s continued growth as a songwriter. This song will feature on his new EP titled Night, Unfold, which comes out on February 2nd.
