New Pop from Dogs at Large

Opening with swirling psychedelia seeming sets the tone for this new single from Dogs at Large, but don’t be fooled. Sam Pirruccello quickly jumps into the picture with this operatic voice that sweeps the song into the realms of pop traditions. There are moments when the song walks around like the cocky younger brother of Jens Lekman, but other instances when the swirling sounds almost gives off a Fresh and Onlys gone-pop vibe…both sides fit well for most listeners. Look for more explorative pop vibes on their soon to be released, Overpass LP.

Pop Vibes from Onsind

The UK seems to have an abundance of great pop bands at the moment, so feel free to add Onsind to you list of hit-makers. This week the group announced that they’ll be working with Salinas Records in the US for the release of their new album, We Wilt, We Bloom. These opening guitar moments definitely kick off the track by building towards the guitar-monies before natural bounce of the song joins in with the vocals. You’re likely to have the line “misery, misery, misery loves company” stuck in your head a bit, but that’s a the good thing about pop music…leaving you with something to take with you. Look for the group’s new album in January of next year!

Former Sandwitch Earth Girl Helen Brown has spent this year dedicating various seasons to causes benefiting the world. She enters today with a track from the latest installment, Saturn. The opening moments really create the vibe from all the installments, as you can hear all parties having a bit of fun while a groove is established; it reeks of true collaboration collected by Heidi Alexander. There’s a smoky vocal that fills the central moment of the track, but the careful jam continues the communal value of the music…all circling back to the goal of distributing funds raised to various charities/causes. Tape versions are currently available from Empty Cellar Records.

Put our soap opera jokes aside, as Guiding Light mean business. Members of the band have a huge pedigree that would excite most fans, but I’ll let you find that info on your own, as the story should be this great track we’re sharing with you today. Think about the atmospheric soul of Spiritualized opening the track, stretching delicately across the song’s first 2 minutes. Then you’re immediately washed in noise and distortion, with just the faintest glimmer of vocals before the track settles back into its angelic exploration. The band is set to release their self-titled LP this Friday via Bleeding Gold, and it promises to be favored by the multitudes in search of spirituality in their music.

 

More Mo Troper Please

Ask and you shall receive, as we have another single from Mo Troper to share with you today. For me, this one definitely has a nostalgic late 90s rock vibe; the vocals build this tension that leads you to a slight change in tone as the chorus crashes down. More importantly, the band continues to show growth in the construction of their songs, as you’ll surely hear with the built in string section adding deep texture to the tune. It’s the kind of subtle touch that elevates the track from just a mere indie rock song. Look for Good Cheer Records to drop Exposure and Response on November 17th.

Missed This Crepes Tune

The Melbourne scene continues to prove to be one of the more diverse, and prolific, music scenes across the globe…and rising act Crepes dropped a tune from their latest album that I completely missed. Their first single from Channel Four was an energetic number titled “Sexyland,” but they pull back on the rhythm here and let this gem just flow. Lyrics are delivered in the most casual manner, with the bass line the most prominent musical element in the mix…yet you’ll hear synth lines sparkling in the far off. You might also hear a brief nod to Phoenix in the vocal twist during the chorus…but that could just be us. Channel Four is being handled by Deaf Ambitions and Spunk, and is about to hit the streets!

Surely you know how much we adore Caroline Says, the project of Caroline Sallee (of Pollen Rx fame). Today, we happily bring you a collaboration between Little Tornados and Caroline Says. Oh, and did we mention that Little Tornados is the work of David Thayer and Laetitia Sadler (of Stereolab)! Together they’ve crafted this gentle pop excursion into the underbelly of psychedelia; careful guitar lines blend with beautiful little harmonies, culminating in this enchanting wash of escapism. This song is being made available by River Jones Music, with the full length album, Apocalypse, scheduled to drop in January of next year. Feel free to lose yourself in the entirety of this song.

Stream Fitting In Well from Girlatones

Not too long ago I brought you a tune from Australia’s Girlatones, an act I had penned as an up-and-coming powerhouse…but today I’m here with the stream of their album, Fitting In Well. Across 9 songs, the band takes you all over the pop spectrum. You, of course, get to start off with the infectious “Share the Love,” bringing a bouncing bit of casual pop. But, my favorite highlight in the album’s opening moments was “You’re My Friend;” it reminds me of listening to Richie Valens in the kitchen as a kid. Then you’ll find the dark brood of “Misunderstood,” which stretches out into a minor jam before settling back into the groove. My two cents would also be well spent on “Put Me Back Together,” a track that definitely seems rooted in the well-discussed regional vibe (especially as of late). Saying that Fitting In Well is a gem from start to finish seems like a bit of an understatement, as each track could easily stand on its own. But, lucky for us all, it’s a complete collection; you can buy it directly from the band HERE.

Captivating Number from Lau Nau

While browsing the webs I came across this delightful tune from Finnish songstress Lau Nau; it’s the latest single from her forthcoming Poseidon. It’s a quiet number, filled to the brim with layers of ornate orchestration. You’ll be mesmerized by the very careful rise and fall in volume as singer Laura Naukkarinen drapes lyrics over the ever-changing landscape of the track. Strings swell in line with the piano, all building along with the vocals, gradually awaiting the listener’s emotional release as the song fades to black. Her new record will drop on November 17th via Beacon Sound.
