Stream Verandan’s New EP

If you do choose to follow these pages, then you’ve likely seen Verandan pop up rather frequently the last few months. It’s important to note, especially for me, that this is the latest project from Ville Hopponen of Cats on Fire fame (a personal fave). Through six times you’ll find yourself enamored with the casual pop vibes, though be sure to pay close attention to the fragility that seems to lurk on tracks like “Inland Sea.” You’ll also be able to find your own personal escape on “Follow the Money,” or turn up the energy with the indifferently upbeat “A Pleasant View.” The self-titled EP just came out over in Finland via our faves Soliti.

Adults Join Art Is Hard Singles Series

You knew I’d be posting about this, even if you saw the track pop over the weekend, as I’m an avid supporter of Art Is Hard Records…particularly their Singles Series. Perhaps my adoration comes because they always introduce me to new acts from overseas that probably don’t get much press on my side of the pond. Adults have this youthful vibrancy, but also this distorted punch…similar in my mind to the sweeter moments of Joanna Gruesome or perhaps early Los Campesinos. Regardless, you throw a hook in with some male/female vocal trading and I’m hooked. Check this new jam for sure.

Hear a Brand New Track from Oh Well Goodbye

The last time we heard from Oh Well, Goodbye, they were releasing the very excellent Swoon 7″, and we’re really excited to share this new number with you. This song will feature on the group’s new EP, Affinity Part One. For me, the best thing about this new single is how deep the band delves into a beautiful darkness…there’s plenty of space hanging about, draped with unobtrusive bits of guitar and a bass line that guarantees tension. There’s just this enormous bit of space, and Phillip Rourke is there to fill it in with his voice, somewhat resembling Paul Banks. I love how things are just left open, left to your interpretation and your involvement. The new EP will be released by EDILS and Bleeding Gold on November 3rd, so you have time to acquaint yourself!

 

New Music from Ciggie Witch

Ciggie Witch has long been an outlet for Ocean Party member Zac Denton, but on the work for the group’s newest album, they took a more collaborative approach to the recording. In the end, it leaves listeners with a completed sound…details are fleshed out, space is filled…but pop sensibility is ever present. For instance, take the exuberant explosion that jumps off around the 3 minute mark, which comes after a brief interlude of stark guitar work. It continues to amaze me how consistently good these guys are; some artists are prolific to their own detriment, but as Zac and his pals illustrate, there’s not a bad track this round. Mad Music will be released by Lost and Lonesome next Friday (10/13).

Revisit Chris Gantry

Chris Gantry may not be a household name, but we can hold out hope that At the House of Cash will go some way to remedying that. These songs are all from back in 73′, recorded at the home of Johnny Cash. While the balladry is sincere and heartfelt, what really stands out is the lush arrangements that were laid behind the core of the tracks. Sure, it was studio magic used many a time for that era, but as you’ll see on the single below it creates an artist of grand vision, something that never fades in time. Drag City is releasing this album on November 17th.

Moving Tune from Har-di-Har

Don’t you dare settle on passing judgment on this new Har-Di-Har tune until you’ve listened to it from start to finish. Why? For starters, it’s a very special track, going in and out of various movements, built over collage pop structures and soaring vocal notes; it’s filled to the brim with creativity, done artfully…reminiscent of early Dirty Projectors. It goes back and forth, this way and that, enchanting all the way. Just another example of why you should spend some time today with we will will you, the band’s recently released LP.

Another Tune from the New Gingerlys Release

It’s probably a really unfair time for Gingerlys; people will unfortunately just give them the blanket comparison to Alvvays…not a bad thing per se, but just so you know, the Gingerlys released Jumprope EP several weeks before Alvvays had their first release. Just saying. Other than usage of melody and a female vocalist, the structure and sound of the songs definitely differs. Listen in the background for the way the guitars distortedly twinkle in the distance…and the vocals seem happy to sort of sit atop the mix, rather than propel the track. The self-titled LP from Gingerlys will be released on November 17th via Babe City/Topshelf; Alvvays fans will love it, but mostly people that have really good taste in music will love it.

Brand New SMiiLE Single

Austin’s SMiiLE have been on our radar for some time; we ran their album, Like a Diamond in the Rough, You Shine almost a year ago to this day. And here they are unleashing a new single unto the world, with a video to boot. All will be celebrated over at 2822 Salado St, with things kicking off around 8 PM. This new single still has the group’s ability to charm with infectious melodies, but there’s a little bit more grit, or punch here…illustrating the band’s growth in the short time they’ve been around. Come celebrate the band and their new single tonight, as they head out on tour to spread their positive vibes across the US. Oh, and our dear friends the Millbrook Estates will open, as will Marmalakes, so be there early. We have more news on Marmalakes, but we’ll save that for another day…we’re here to celebrate SMiiLE.

Fresh Music from Mush

I keep going back to the Art Is Hard page, hoping to find the new track from their Postcard Series (where is it!), but instead found this nice little jam from Mush. The group have just finished up a Double AA 7″ for the label, and you can fall in love with one of the tracks below. My ears hear little bits of Omni in the guitar chords, but also a touch of Ought in the way the vocals are delivered, as in they’re super casual. They take the latter half out for a joyride of jangling guitar jams, so keep your ears ready. Look for the new 7″ to be released on November 17th.
