Enjoy This New Dinner Video

When I first encountered Dinner at SXSW a bit ago, I regarded him as a bit of an oddity, something you had to see to believe. But, the great thing about that performance was that it made me go back and listen to his music; I’ve been hooked ever since. His excellent new album New Work just dropped via Captured Tracks, and this video provides a further illustration at the intoxicating qualities of his tunes. Deep vocal tones dancing atop steady beat work should be enough to grab the ear of any listener. He’ll also be touring the US throughout October with a date in Austin on the 23rd at Hotel Vegas.

Check Out Party Hardly

The Leeds outfit Party Hardly have garnered a lot of support from fellow rising stars over in the UK, which is how they came to our attention. They’re not a afraid to turn the guitars up loud, even as they let the notes dabble in dream pop qualities, giving the band a heavy edge that guarantees explosive performances in the live setting. I like the way the vocals were recorded too, hiding in the mix just enough to keep things balanced. Keep an eye on these lads, as they’re already a huge hit on the other side of the pond.

Another Fresh Airiel Tune

Just a week ago we dropped a remarkable return from Airiel, and today there’s another tune that popped up over at FTR. True to form, the song’s filled with cascading guitars lines that create an enormous wall of beautiful atmospherics. Vocals are hidden in the back, and on this tune, they almost serve as a textural element for the rest of the band to work around…ebbs and flows and what nots. Fans are really going to clamor for this, so if you’re new to the band, you might want to rush over to Shelflife and get your hands on Molten Young Lovers before the October 13th release date.

Destroyer Drops New Video

I don’t know what it is, but even when Dan Bejar seems to go out of his comfort zone, he’s able to execute as Destroyer. For instance, his new track definitely has an early 80s pulse to it, heavy on the synths and sterile percussion. Somehow, Bejar’s unique croon is able to slide carefully in between the grooves, delivering contemplative lines that reverberate as the synths echo in the background. In the video, there’s some great imagery captured in the stills that fill it. Look for his new album, ken, to hit on October 20th via Merge.

Turn Up This Bethlehem Steel Track

It’s the middle of the week, and you’re likely to need an energetic pick-me-up…and there might not be a better one than this new Bethlehem Steel tune. It toys with you at the opening, just casually riffing, building the tension. Within moments, the volume goes to 11, blasting through your speakers. They fill the track with heavy riffs, though never stray too far away from pop sensibility. Should make for a solid new album, Party Naked Forever…it’ll drop November 10th via Exploding in Sound.

Doug Tuttle Joins Matt Lajoie For Guitar Album

First off, Doug Tuttle has already released the most excellent album, Peace Potato, earlier this year. Now he’s joined up with his friend Matt Lajoie (Herbcraft) to create an improvisational electric guitar record, American Primate. The concept of the album was born while the two toured together, reuniting at Doug’s home studio in Massachusetts. There was no concept, only the goal of creating something entirely improvisational…with a little studio magic added to the back end. The result is quite something, as you listen to two guitars battling back and forth, shifting pitches to balance one another at the same time. American Primate will be available through Burger Records on October 6th.

Springy Pop from Swimming Tapes

There’s a youthful vibrance to the work that Swimming Tapes have completed. You can hear that exuberance immediately in this new single, jangling away from the moment you press play. A steady beat goes along, allowing the guitar to ring just a bit louder, all the whiles the vocals circle around your ears. They take you on the dreamier side of guitar pop, and you’re grateful for it. They’ll release their Soft Sea Blue EP on September 15th, so expect continued joy from their forthcoming release.

Sonic Transmissions Festival Starts Thursday

In a city where it feels like there’s a festival or party for everything, we’ve come to appreciate the diversity represented in the Sonic Transmissions Festival (Year 3). Rarely will you find a festival that operates within the confines of our fair city that puts experimental jazz next to cumbia and punk rock…yet here they are! They’ll kick off things Thursday evening over at Barracuda, then moving to Kick Butt Coffee on Friday and ending at Victory Grill/Kenny Dorham’s Backyard on Saturday. It truly is a festival that encapsulates everything that Austin’s music scene has to offer.

Hear the Premiere of Historian’s Latest Single

It’s been a couple of years since we’ve heard from Historian, but I feel as if this new single makes it all worth the wait. The base of this song seems to be a carefully strummed guitar and the deep vocal tones of Chris Karman, but it’s the added layers that really push the song into something special. You’ll hear string accompaniment giving death and emotion to the song’s twists and turns. Horns even pop up mid-track to illustrate just how much the group paid attention to the finer details in every number. This is just our first glimpse of the band’s new LP, Expanse, which comes out on October 20th.

Dig On This Eli Raybon Tune

There’s something about slow-jam synth pop that really makes me a sucker; I just drink it up and press play over and over again, much as I’ve done with this new Eli Raybon tune. I enjoy the way he slowly releases his vocal notes, almost as if they’re being drawn out against his will; it creates this seductive vibe that brings you deeper into the song itself. For now, this tune is a one-ff single, as Eli has just recently released his Green EP, so enjoy this jam, then go back in time and listen to his other tracks…you won’t wanna miss em’.
