Uplifting Pop Number from TRASH

I love a good pop number, especially when its sunny outside, so why not post this new jam from TRASH. The approach is pretty simple, giving listeners a natural bounce from the driving rhythm, but I really like the little nuances where the band toy with listeners. Several times in the track they hold back the melodic release, just for a second; it’s like a sugary pop tease that only draws you further into their sound. Plus, they have these distant dream pop guitar lines lurking in the distance, and you know I’m a sucker for that sound. Look for the group to release their new EP later this summer.

Powerful Pop Hit from The Domestics

Saw this new track from The Domestics pop up at GFP last week, and it’s a pretty stunning song. I was first drawn in by the careful chords that open the song, drifting in before being joined by a soft croon as the song progresses; I could have been happy with this first 1.5 minutes, but the band’s not done. They pick up their sound, first swelling with a broad wash of pop emphasis, then jump off into a bouncing explosiveness that reminds me, slightly, of Vampire Weekend. Their album Little Darkness will be released by Tender Loving Empire on September 1st.

Brand New Track from The Stevens

People have been listing their favorite albums of the year a lot lately, and while I get that, we haven’t even heard the new record from the Stevens. Today we have their second single from the forthcoming Good, and it’s the perfect blend of their discordant moments and their pop leanings. Twanging guitars ring, rhythms take on a dark swing and it leaves us all with a great deal of hope for a brilliant release. Chapter Music will be releasing Good on July 14th, so be on the lookout for the next hit record of 2017.

Brand New Indiepop from Pale Spectres

I’ve been waiting for what seems like forever for this new Pale Spectres EP to drop, and it looks like we’re getting a little bit closer as the band have dropped a new single. It’s the perfect jam for a Friday, dreamy and spirited, supported by some precision drumming that keeps the song pushing forward. I like the mini breakdown of ringing guitars that hits right after the 2 minute mark…closing out the track with a wistful vibe looking towards the future. Look for this new EP to drop in August via Cloudberry Records.

More from Black Fly

I’ve previously posted about Black Fly, and the more I give into my electronic inclinations, the more impressed I am by his work. He opens this track with a dense little soundscape before kicking in heavy synth beats that drive the song forward. Rhythmically, it gets you going, then he drapes these deep toned vocals atop the mix, only to pull back the rains with a steady beat and soft piano notes. His songs take on so many switches and changes that you’ll find it hard not be fascinated by his work. Go ahead…I promise its okay to love this.

Come to the Austin Record Label Flea Market This Saturday

While Austin musicians get a lot of love for their hard work, there’s anumber of incredible Austin record labels that work equally as hard to make it all happen. This Saturday at 3Ten ACL (right below the Moody Theater), you can come see a handful of those labels setting up shop and selling their records and moreover at the 2nd Annual Record Label Flea Market.

Labels involved: Modern Outsider, Super Secret Records, Western Vinyl, Holodeck Records, Launch Cycle, Chicken Ranch Records, Keeled Scales, Saint Marie Records, Nine Mile Records and, of course, our own little ATH Records.

Entry is free. Open from 1-5 PM. Performances by The Sour Bridges and A. Sinclair!

Here’s a new A. Sinclair tune I hope we get to hear too:

New Jesse Tune from Hard Sky

Seems like there’s some great Austin-related news floating about today, with that early jam from Sleep Good, and now Jesse of Pure X releases another single. Considering he’s a Texan, its no wonder this song is filled with sliding guitar and a smoke-filled vocal. But, what I think makes Jesse’s work important, at least today, is that he’s wrapping a traditional style with his own tapestry. There’s an audible hiss working behind him throughout, with some other little atmospheric flourishes peeping through…much like you’d expect from a Pure X release. Look for his new album Hard Sky to pop up o June 23rd courtesy of Uniform Group.

Gentle New Laucan Tune

Laucan has been on my radar for some time, and we even encouraged folks this year to catch him at SXSW. He’s back with a song from his debut album, and it’s just as stunning as we’ve come to expect. It takes on a traditional folk vibe, working melodic vocals over gently strummed guitar and light percussive notes. For me, the texture of strings in the background elevates the tune, stepping in line with pounding drum hits as the song’s natural tension pushes forward as the song fades to a close. FramesPerSecond will be out on August 21st via Sundays Best…and it might just bring you your favorite new folk musician.

Stream I Did the Best I Could from Office Culture

You look around the Internet these days and the landscape looks very similar; it all feels the same. But, enter Office Culture and their album, I Did the Best I Could; it opens the door to a blend of pop music that’s as refreshing as it is nostalgic. “Molly” is a jam reminiscent of early Jens Lekman, focusing on the vocals, while letting the music fill in the space behind. Other tracks like “Fool” pull in barroom crooner vibes, though they layer backing vocals and guitar stabs to build the pop sensibility. I’m looking around, browsing my musical library, and there’s nothing quite like the listen I lay before you. This is where pop music succeeds. This is where you’ll find your happy place. The LP hits this Friday.

The Triffids Reissues Come Out Friday

I spent the first few days of my break finishing off “Grant and I,” which mentioned the Triffids as one of the other early Aussie acts that influenced the country’s musical landscape. I’d only listened to the band casually, as they weren’t as dear to me as the Go-Betweens, but I’m really excited for the reissue of Treeless Plain and In the Pines this Friday. I love the way the band seems so relaxed in their songs, seemingly foretelling the country’s flare for casual pop. Here’s a little ditty I’ve been enjoying over the last few days to hopefully pique your interest and have you revisiting the band’s catalog along with these reissues.
