New Slow Jam from Justus Proffit

There’s been a whole in my heart since the tragic passing of Elliott Smith, but it looks like I’ve now got a new artist to fawn over: Justus Proffit. His songwriting definitely recalls Smith’s work, from the whispering notes of his vocals, to the sounds of each string vibrating in the recording. There’s a bit of mud on the mix, however, which allows Proffit to seek out his own songwriting ground, in the land wear Elliott meets modern bedroom tropes akin to Coma Cinema. I’ve been longing for something that felt so personal again, and it looks like this is going to be the perfect trick. Look for his new Ups/Downs EP on March 17th via Smoking Room.

ATX Spotlight: That Julia Lucille Video I Need to Post

Feel like I could definitely (and will) do more on International Women’s Day, so what better way than to celebrate one of our favorite Austin artists, Julia Lucille. Recently she released this video for “Darkening,” one of the many beautiful tracks on her forthcoming Chthonic LP…and, well, I think you should watch it. The way the video was shot (by Jordan Moser) perfectly matches the song’s mood; it’s also a pretty sparse song, lyrically, illustrating just how much power Julia can carry with the simplest approaches. Oh, and she’ll be playing at our ATH vs SOTO Showdown this Sunday over at Hotel Vegas. Her album will be released by our friends at Keeled Scales on April 7th.

Dark Dance from The Vacant Lots

I love a good synth pop jam, especially when it wears the influence of Alan Vega. You can hear some of that in the way the guitars move angularly beneath the heavy beats at the front of the mix. The Vacant Lots have just announced Endless Night, their new effort, and you’ll definitely find this a hit to get any good night started. The beats aren’t too hard, with just a little bit of restraint forcing the audience to absorb the emotional appeal churning in and out of their speakers. Look for the new LP on April 21st via Metropolis.

More New Music from The Cairo Gang

When this guitar first entered my ears I immediately flashed back to a period of heavy riffs and glam outfits. But, while those elements definitely exist in this new Cairo Gang, I love the way the guitars sit back in the mix, letting the breath-y vocals provide the emphatic stomp as the notes turn over one another. Perhaps one of the finer elements of this piece are the jammier moments being stretched out carrying listeners through a psychedelic journey all the way to the abrupt end. Untouchable, the newest album from the project, will be released on March 24th via God?.

More New Music from The Octopus Project

This brand new Octopus Project is a pretty big jump, sonically, and it should be clear in the track’s title, roughly translated to “watch out” or “beware.” It opens with a fuzzy bass, shattered by guitars and crashing cymbals; it’s not like the band we’ve come to known…until you get the lyrics. While the song seems heavy-handed, the light feel of the vocals sort of reminds me of a happier version of Angus from Liars; it’s a touch post rock, fueled by an artful exploration. I’m a big fan of bands going out to mixing things up, making the forthcoming Memory Mirror something we can all look forward to (hits on April 7th).

New Woods Album!!!

We’ve all been talking about how music can provide us solace in the next four years, hoping that someone writes great tunes to provide us some escapism. Woods, one of our favorites, have just announced a brand new six song album that aims to just that…though they’re doing so with a vibe of positivity. They acknowledge that many of us feel helpless in our surroundings, but ultimately we’ll turn to friends and artists to provide positivity and love in our lives. They’ve titled the album Love is Love, and it’s slated for an April release via Woodsist…sample the album’s title track below.

Mimi Raver Readies New LP

While various styles of nostalgia are constantly being retooled, one that’s become more prominent in the last few years is that of the pop chanteuse, such as this new Mimi Raver. It sounds similar to the tones of Molly Burch or Angel Olsen, though the music behind her voice is akin to a modern experiment in trip-hop; the percussion sounds looped, and there are various layers atop of one another, creating a beautiful cacophony for Raver’s voice. She’s preparing for the release of 06′ Female, which is being released in April…this song being an ode to the female wolves in Yellowstone (of particular interest to this one-time YNP resident).

SXSW Interview: Ne-Hi

Last year at SXSW there were a couple of acts that I constantly chased around, trying to catch them as many times as I could. This year, one of the bands on that must see list is Ne-Hi. We’ve got a brief little interview with the band, and we’ve included their SXSW dates below, so you can chase them around just like me! They’ll be playing tons of jams, I hope, off their recent album, Offers…just in case you haven’t checked it out yet.

Jangling Pop from Gentle Brent

You might know Brent Randall from his work as Pinecones, but he’s changing the moniker to Gentle Brent, offering up a brand new album titled Just Dandy. This song’s opening guitar will wrap around you from the get-go, just as the vocals playfully bounce their way into the number. The vocals clearly have the focus, almost giving off a dose of swing in the way they move back and forth with stretched melodies. It’s a short spurt of pop music, dripping with sugar for your ears; it’s available now via Jigsaw Records.
