Show Review: Arcade Fire @ The Frank Erwin Center (09/27)

Last Wednesday night had a large crowd flooding to the Frank Erwin Center for a night of music indie rock legends by the names of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade. If you’ve been around or even somewhat paying attention to the music of the past decade, it feels like it would be an impossible feat to not recognize at least one of these two household names. While Wolf Parade has lived a fairly tame existence in terms of constant rock goodness, Arcade Fire have admittedly dabbled in controversy as of late. I wasn’t sure what to expect of the evening: would the infamous band that created Funeral and Neon Bible force its fans to pay 75 dollars to hear only new material off their less-than-good latest release Everything Now, or would they delight fans to the music that made them famous?

Short But Sweet Video From Amy O

Amy O has released a new video for her track, “Lavender Night,” which is just the right level of high energy to push you through your Thursday. The song is a brief burst of twee vibes with an undercurrent of grittier lo-fi that pushes through in the electric guitar. The vocals are super sweet and honeyed, riding high in the mix, but the rest of the two minute track is rock and roll. Check out the dancing in the woods/party time video below.

The LP this video/track is taken from,Elastic, is out and available for purchase here.

Another New Alex Cameron Video

Alex Cameron, the man, the legend, is on his way to his sophomore album release. After his killer duet and neat video for “Stranger’s Kiss” featuring Angel Olsen, he’s trying to keep the momentum going for that upcoming record. “Runnin’ Outta Luck” shows the artist dancing about in several different locations along a coast with his signature silly dance moves, high waist jeans, and slicked back cool-boy hair. The track is a bouncy pop tune, with 80s synth influence and the help of Brandon Flowers on backing vocals/guitars/keys. You can definitely hear Flowers’ presence through the whole song, and the chorus is pretty damn catchy, leaning hard into the bad-boy persona that Cameron has fashioned. Take a peek below and get ready for the release of Forced Witness, which will be out next week on September 8 via Secretly Canadian.

Brooding Track From A. Savage

A. Savage, of Parquet Courts, will be releasing his new album,Thawing Dawn, in a little over a month on October 13. He’s shared another single from that release called “Wild, Wild, Wild Horses” and it’s an interesting take on indie rock. It’s got a cinematic feel to it– minimalist in instrumentation, the song sounds like it’s going to launch into full sound at any moment, but it sort of lingers off stage for the most part. The vocals are in the spotlight, and with in-depth lyrics like A. Savage has spun, you’re pretty glad you can make out every word. Take a listen below and then go pre-order the new record here.

New Rocker From Alex Lahey

Alex Lahey, out of Melbourne, is coming up in the scene with some pretty great indie rock that fans of Courtney Barnett will enjoy. The new track she released this morning, “Lotto in Reverse” is a prime example of her sleek yet fuzzed out rock and roll. The guitars are heavy in the mix, grounding the whole thing in a layer of garage sound, while the vocals demand the power of the track, Lahey’s range shining through the choruses. Take a listen, immerse yourself in the lyric video below, and get stoked for her new album,I Love You Like a Brother, which will be out October 6. Pre-order it here.

Midnight Sister Shares New Video

Midnight Sister first got our attention with this zany video, and with the release of this new video they’re pulling us in a little closer in anticipation of the debut of their full length album. “Clown” is no exception to this excitement. The song is a nostalgic orchestral pop lullaby, complete with sweeping string arrangements that will leave you swooning. The whole number feels like a blast from the past, with cutting melancholy that’s doubled down by the pristine vocals from Juliana Giraffe and the visual accompaniment of two figures slow dancing in the middle of an empty street. Take a peek below and get ready for the release ofSaturn Over Sunset, which will be out September 28 via Jagjaguwar. Pre-order it here.

Show Review: Father John Misty 08/23 (ACL Taping)

Another week, another trip to the Moody Theater for me. Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way– when it comes to touring acts, there really is no better venue in this town to catch a big name. Tuesday night, a rather large name, or perhaps a man with a rather large mouth, came to our city to tape an episode of Austin City Limits. With all the buzz around Father John Misty and his latest album, Pure Comedy, I was interested to see what the character that Josh Tillman plays would have in store for a taping. What we got was a dialed in performance from a personae.

Read past the jump to get my full thoughts on the show.
