Digging This Rocker From Mainland

unnamed-4So maybe I’m a few days late to sharing this track, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less good. On the contrary, you should be already clicking on the track to listen now, so that you can make up for my tardiness. Mainland, out of Brooklyn, are releasinga new album before the end of this year and they’ve shared a track from that upcoming LP. “Permission Slip” goes nicely with the everlasting summer we’re having here in the ATX; the ceaseless “oohs” and springy pop guitars scream warm weather and carefree attitude. The vocals also remind me of Modest Mouse a bit in their raspy energy. Take a listen.

Meg Duffy, the front lady behind the moniker, has a voice that will bathe you in its warm and yet hold you completely at its mercy while the bluesy guitar parts twist and turn through the background. Her debut album,Humble Before The Void, will be out via Woodsist sometime at the start of 2017.

Psych-Pop Gem From Foreign/National

14708144_951634728297574_3054686479470239070_nWe’vebeen watching out for anything new that Australia’s Foreign/Nationalhas been putting out now for a few years, so I’m stoked to share that the band is getting ready to release their debut full-length in the near future and they’ve given us a track to jam to in the meantime. “Too Sentimental,” is a golden tune–very detailed musically, but also a perfect pop song that you can listen to over and over again. I’m digging the twee sounds that open the song and the way the vocals simmer low in the mix along with the percussion, but then move to the spotlight for the chorus. It’s a great song and you should take a listen below and then jump on the Foreign/National train before it leaves the station.

Folksy Tune From Mat Hunsley

mat-hunsley-press-shot-2

While it’s still pretty damn hot here in Austin, Fall in general leads me down folkier paths of listening. Mat Hunsley, a singer/songwriter out of Newcastle, has got a good folk track in “Fires,” which you can listen to below. Hunsley’s vocals are rich as he spins rhymes atop the gentle strumming of acoustic guitar. This dynamic really holds your attention from the beginning as the song builds upon itself to a strong chorus-like ending with layers of vocals that wants you to sing along.

You can pre-order his upcoming EP,To Being Free, here.

Western Boogie From The Molochs

13411931_1065602526865943_2012251016579006195_oI’m always looking for songs that are a little outside of the realm of what I normally listen to, but that still fit the bill as infectious and exciting. This track from The Molochs, out of LA, called “No More Cryin'” is different and delightful– a groovy ditty that will lodge itself into your day and beg you to listen again and again. From the sound of this group, you might imagine that they’d be from here in Texas, or somewhere southern, as they’ve got a definite honky tonk sound to the jangly beat. Perhaps it’s the intermittent harmonica that chimes in and out of the mix, or the crunchy bass line that begs for toe tapping and head bobbing. What’s also great about this song is the story that it tells in between the catchy, sing-along, chorus. So tip your cowboy hat to these Californians and give the track below some well-deserved attention.

America’s Velvet Glory will be out January 13th via Innovative Leisure Records. Pre-order it here.

Dreamy Rock From Crystal Eyes

14330090_649928901842139_176906699157259295_nCrystal Eyes, out of Calgary, released their debut EP last year and are on their way to follow up this up with their first full length album. They’ve got a nice and dreamy aesthetic to their sound– complete with sun bleached guitars and high-pitched female gang vocals. You’ll hear a perfect example of this sound on “Already Gone–” their latest single, which you can take a listen to below. It opens with cutting guitars, and before the vocals even kick in, you know you’re in for a hit. Check out the track and get stoked for The Female Imagination, which will be out soon.

Did You Catch This New Pill Video?

12963790_836192153177229_6321725234827452022_nIn case you missed it, last week, Pill dropped a video for their single “Dead Boys,” which is the perfect October aesthetic for those of you looking to get in the Halloween mood. The video features the band frolicking around in a graveyard– Houdini’s grave to be exact– and the post rock tune makes for a great soundtrack to the video. Check it out and then go scoop up Pill’s latest release here via Mexican Summer.

Slightly Late To The Party: Pale Honey

14435158_929839563787121_4964455778880146206_oPale Honey are a Swedish group that I’m somehow just now finding out about, though they dropped their latest track, “Real Thing,” to the internet alittle while ago. This song has got a nice balance of fuzzy guitars with angelic vocals, and while it’s a rock song, the percussion is eclectic– waves of tinkering cow-bell esque sounds give the tune a funky beat. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also finishing touches of synth waves that round things out nicely. It’s a catchy track, and I’m looking forward to more from this group.

This single will be out officially on October 13th via Bolero Recordings. You can go preorder it here.

Laid Back Rocker From Stef Chura

12247971_1672787559654622_1822489805624074009_oStef Chura, out of Detroit, is an act you need to keep an eye out for. She’s got that perfect blend of slackerpop and rock with a hint of power vocals to round the mix out nicely. “You,” starts and you are reminded immediately of The Cranberries– mellow grunge guitars create this almost sinister sounding atmosphere, while Chura’s vocals are twangy but a definite force to be reckoned with. It’s a lovely laid back rocker that slowly transitions to outright jam.

Her debut record, Messes, will be out in a few months on January 27th via Urinal Cake Records.

Digging This Priests Video

priests-by-audrey-meltonPriests are a group out of DC that have got a right riotous sound going for them. They’ve just announced the release of their debut full length album,Nothing Feels Natural, and with that announcement, they’ve given us a taste of the sound that we can expect from the band. What they’ve showed us on “JJ” is a track that begins en medias res and doesn’t stop rocking until it’s close. The drums really make this track– the percussion is a constant, evolving presence, from stark and strong to shimmery and heavy on cymbal crashes. Meanwhile, the vocals mirror this sort of transience from the band; one moment they’re pretty and neat, the next they’re snarling at you. Overall, it’s a solid rock track, and I’m looking forward to more from Priests. Watch below.
