The internet is buzzing with this new video/single from Molly Burch, and after taking a bit of time with this track, I can understand why. The song below, “Downhearted” is a gorgeous blend of dark, romantic pop with a hint of folk, all with Burch’s velvet vocals at the heart of the song. The mix is simple and low, allowing Burch’s voice to shine. It’s got an Angel Olsen-meets-Sharon Van Etten vibe to it, and you should definitely take a listen and get acquainted with this lady before she blows up big time. Pre-order the single here.

Lo-Fi Grunge From Violent Change

violentchangeI don’t know about y’all, but for me Tuesdays go better with some grunge rock…well, any day sort of goes better with grunge rock. That source of tunes on the darker, grittier side of things today comes from Violent Change, a band out of San Francisco who have got a good thing going with their loud, explosive sound. When you press play on “Unit A,” you’ll be pleased with the waves of distortion that will meet your ears. The vocals are echo-y and far away in the mix, while the guitars are crunchy with gritty noise. It’s a good lo-fi track, and makes me excited to hear more from the band, and lucky for me they’ll be releasing their third LP jointly on Melters and It Takes Two.

Weirdo Glam Rock From Savoy Motel

unnamed-57Savoy Motel are a new(ish) group that going to be releasing their debut album soon, and today they’ve shared the second single from said album. “Sorry People” is a 70s inspired glam rock boogie tune that will have you donning your bell bottoms and feathering your hair. You’ll pick up on this vibe pretty much as soon as you press play on the track below– the guitars are very much reminiscent of 70s Bowie a-la “Fame,” but the dueling male/female vocals really kick the song into a different sound as the song goes on. Take a listen and find out what you think about Savoy Motel.

Savoy Motelwill be out October 21st onWhat’s Your Rupture? Records.

Cyrus Gengras Shares Soft Toned Garage Tune

unnamed-56You may know Cyrus Gengras from his touring support for artists like Jessica Pratt or Kevin Morby, but perhaps you’ve never heard of his solo efforts. Recently, Gengras decided to set out on his own and record some tracks that show off his garage inspired songwriting skills. The result, as you can sample below with the track, “Other Side,” is a blast of americana-rock that rides on the mellow mood that it dwells in. However, this track is more than just a mellow groove– as the vocals of Gengras have this infectious quality to them that keep you engrossed in the tune. Take a listen and if you like what you’re hearing, be sure to pre-order the cassette release he’s got coming for you on Death Records.

Dreamy Pop From Hazel English

You can find this track, “I’m Fine,” on that upcoming record, as well as a few others, and you can pre-order it from her website or Rough Trade Records. What I like about this song is the simple, yet completely entrancing brand of dream pop that you find. It’s a quiet, folksy tune, but one that will make you press repeat again and again.

Winter Gives You Hazy Dream Pop

12898413_1072095462853472_9211509512580337055_o-2Winter are a four piece out of L.A. who are making dream pop that’ sounds as though it’s been deeply coated in a thick layer of fog. The song that’s below, “Wherever You Are,” unfolds slowly, with the whirling synths occupying the song for a bit before the vocals join in. When the vocals finally do come in, you begin to be lulled into a sort of hypnotic trance; the elements all combine to create a beast of a song that will ensnare your attention with its out-of-this-world pop.

Bluesy Folk From Dennis Callaci

denniscallaciYou may know Dennis Callaci from his various work in other projects over the past few decades, but you’ve certainly never experienced him like this. The song below, called “S.O.S,” is a single taken from Callaci’s upcoming debut album under his own name, and it’s a balanced blend of folk with a bit of blues that will have fans of the simple songwriter excited for more. Callaci’s vocals are raw and dripping with emotion as he directs the song, while the instrumentation is subtle– what sounds like slide guitar, minimal organ-piano, and hazy drums complete the tune. Take a listen and be on the lookout for the new album,A Bed of Light, out September 9th.

Lush Electro Folk From And And End

12898147_1005915956158734_5458923584650465063_oYou’ve gotta take a risk sometimes in your listening habits– otherwise you end up listening to the same old, same old. To mix it up, you should take a listen to this song from And And End, the project of Andrew Thoreen, out of St. Paul. When you start the track, you’ll be treated to a Beirut-meets-synth-pop blend of orchestral and electronic elements. I’m digging the way the vocals are really low in the mix, letting the loops of instrumentation really dominate the tune and be the center of things. It’s a great track, and you should listen below.

More Pop To Love From Spritzer

14053663_876990992431249_3986173069315795720_oY’all, I’ve been telling you about this project from Matt Meade for some time now, so how long is it going to take before you finally jump on the Spritzerfan train? Hopefully not too much longer, because it soundslike this train is in full motion with this new track, “The Twilite.” This track is a jazzy pop number, relying on the sounds of wild synths that float in and out of the mix, as well as subtle jazz percussion that simmers under it all. At the heart of the song are the vocals from Meade, which are like a cool breeze on a hot day; soft and with just enough distortion on them to make them float through the mix. Take a listen and get ready for an EP from Spritzer, which will be out September 16 on Paper Garden Records.
