unnamed-50

Are you dragging as much as I am today and need a little bit of a jam to snap you into motion? Well, this new single from Shy Layers, aka JD Walsh, is one way to get you going today, as it’s a heavily layered track with a plethora of licks and rhythm that will surely make you shake it. The song with a simple guitar riff, then pretty much instantly the other layers of synths, percussion, and other guitar join in, creating a electro-pop song that begs you to shimmy and get off your butt. It’s got a Cut Copy meets pure instrumental jam feeling to it, with just a small bit of vocals coming in at the end. Take a listen and start your week with Shy Layers. Don’t forget to pick up the vinyl only release of his debut, self-titled album, out this Friday on Growing Bin Records.Pick it up here.

Did You Catch This New Protomartyr Track??

0002686207_10I’m a pretty big fan of anything that Detroit’s Protomartyr puts out, so naturally I feel inclined to share with you a song they recorded for Adult Swim’s Summer Single collection. Apparently, this song was recorded in a two day span back in March, but when you take a listen to it, it oozes nothing but meticulous and refined garage rock. The track is slow but steady beast that thumps along, the guitars swelling with grit and cutting like knives through the mix. Make sure you take a listen below and check out when the band will be coming to your city next right here… *Spoilers* they’re even coming to our very own Sound on Sound Fest in November. Make sure you’re there.

Bouncing Electro Pop From Psychic Twin

13330930_1262696833741276_6721235017040534068_nPsychic Twin, aka the project of Erin Fein, is starting to make waves with her psychedelic electro pop. Today she put out a new video for the track, “Lose Myself,” which is taken from her upcoming album,Strange Diary. The song is a pulsating and sleek example of electronica, but Fein’s vocals counterbalance these cold sounds with her welcoming vocal presence. The result is a dance-able groove, with a catchy chorus to get you singing along. Watch the video below and get ready for the release ofStrange Diary, which will be out September 9th via Polyvinyl.

Get Groovy With This New Mild High Club Video

Oh man, are you in for a treat. We know it’s hot and we’re in the thick of the dog days of summer down here in the ATX, but I’ve got the perfect track/video that will help you cool off. Mild High Club are a psychedelic slack band that should have your attention immediately. Once you start to listen to the song below and watch the video, you’ll be lulled into a daze of pleasant, laid back, vibes. The guitars trill through tweely, while the vocals are hazy and, well, mild. The chorus employs some jazzy percussion that begs for minimal subtle summer shimmying. All in all, it’s a tune worthy of your ears, so take a listen and get excited for their album with the same as this track, Skiptracing, which will be out August 26th via Stones Throw Records. Preorder it here.

Fresh Glam Rock From Cheena

13568937_313983955603768_8798916160693826690_oNYC’s Cheena are on their way to releasing a new album at the end of this week, but before they get there, they’ve got a new track to throw your way. This track, “Lost My Way,” which is below, is a fuzzy, grumbling example of great glam rock. The percussion glitters and jingles through, while the guitars snarl and spin menacingly for the duration of the tune. Take a listen, fall in love with the rock goodness here, and then get stoked forSpend the Night With…which is out August 5th via Sacred Bones Records.

Intimate Minimalism From The Saxophones

The Saxophones - Band Photo A (Jesse Littlebird Photography)Nathan gets credit for finding this gem of a track, but it’s so good I don’t even mind giving him props. The Saxophones are a two piece husband and wife duo consisting of Alexi and Alison Erenkov, who are based in Oakland. Together, they are making 50’s inspired ballads of yesterday with modern touches that will blow you away with their subtleties. This song, “New Tradition,” is simply a delight; gentle vocals and minimalist instrumentation take turns through the song. It seems like there is never really more than two sounds occupying the sound space, and yet, this track has captured my full attention– everything works together to create a Grizzly Bear meets the vocals of Mystery Jets kind of folk track where you hang on every note. Definitely give this song a listen and then go check out their newest release, If You’re On The Water EP on their Bandcamp page.

Trudy and the Romance Get “Wild”

trudyandtheromanceA few months ago, I discovered the goodness that is the 50s nost-pop that is Trudy and the Romance. Hailing from Liverpool, this group of gentlemen make a certain type of pop that seems destined for summer time listening. They’ve got a new single called “Wild,” which is below, and it’s got an infectious choral hook that you’ll be singing along to in no time. The vocals are raw and of the gang variety, while the guitar parts are loose and go where the song takes them, meanwhile the bass line is positively groovy, making you start the track from the start not long after it’s over.

Elegant and Quiet Folk From Chris Staples

531838_10151779890682857_391227629_nChris Staples has been crafting careful folksy tunes for quite some time now, but he has returned and is on his way to releasing another album.Golden Ageis his latest project and it’s set for release on August 19th on Barsuk Records, but for now, you can check out the latest single from that release, which is called “Park Bench.” When I first started to listen to the track, I was suddenly taken with the way that Staples’ winding lyrics perfectly compliment the simple composition of the track. As the song goes on, the song’s complexity grows, with lush string arrangements keeping the songwriter company and fully fleshing out the number. Simply put, it’s a perfect track for early mornings or quiet times in your day. So give it a spin and get lost for a moment.

Scream Along With This Post Punk Jam From Jaala

For those of you who don’t know, Jaala is a group out of Melbourne, Australia making post-punk tracks that are as wild as they are detailed and ornate. Yesterday they shared the new video for their track “Ticket,” and let me tell you, it’s a post punk gem that will have you hooked right from the start. The vocals on the song are the main event, at one moment jazzy and the next moment snarling and roaring in a raucous shriek. Personally, I’m also digging the way the track kind of meanders along through its start-and-stop journey of post punk. Check out the video below and then go check out Jaala’s debut album, Hard Hold, which is out viaWondercore Island.
