Fashionably Late To The Party: Cherry Crush

12072734_486961824797458_1193891941873060704_nI don’t know what the weather’s like in your neck of the woods, but here in the ATX we are burning our winter coats and donning our spring dresses and shorts for today’s perfect spring day. For me, this warming up in temperature always gets me hankering to listen to a hefty amount of shoegaze/ dreampop music, and lucky for me I found a great track from Cherry Crush. “Lights Out” is a burst of energy, the kind of song you blast through your headphones while you’re outside enjoying the warm sunshine. The percussion on this song is airy and lush, cymbal laden and light, while the guitars shimmer through and backup vocals join the lead for some “ohs” in the background. Turn it up loud and enjoy the weather…or at least pretend like it’s spring.

ATX Spotlight: New Single From Growl

18103_564818663621073_9117292441382477635_nLocals Growl and their guitar driven rock have been on our radar for some time, so we’re pleased to see the band releasing a new single. This new song, “Overnight,” shows the band really meshing together, layering each element precisely to make a great garage rock song. It’s an even-tempered jam, not coming in too hot, but slowly simmering into a smooth rumble. Word on the street is that the band is prepping to release a new full length sometime this year… so get excited for that.

Really Sorry I Missed This: New Twin River!

326473_420403081349273_1395650671_oSo I’m a day or two late on this one, but now it’s ever-more-pressing that you listen to this new track from Twin River. The stakes are so high, as this song is wonderfully lush and dreamy, but groovy enough to promote a bit of a shimmy. Vancouver’s Twin River have got a new 7″ coming out March 4th, giving us a small taste ahead of what’s to come next from the band when they release their sophomore record in the near future. “Antony” is one of those songs you spin over and over again, the tight knit jangly riffs layered perfectly with shimmery percussion and topped off with crisp vocals make for a damn good listen.

Digging This Thrash Pop From Swim Team

unnamed-24The folks over at Infinity Cat Recordingsare doing a cassette series, releasing albums on limited runs of cassette tapes and the newest edition to this series is Swim Team. This band hails out of Cincinnati, but they’ve got enough edge and grit to really make you think otherwise. This new single, “Dirty Work,” is thrash pop at its finest, but the band doesn’t just stop at that. Sure they’ve got the punk vocals, grit-covered guitar riffs and intense lyrics, but they also switch up the lead in the vocals in the middle for a section, making their sound somehow more dramatic. Make sure you acquaint yourself with these guys and pick up one of those very limited lime green cassetteson March 4th.

Trevor Sensor Signs To Jagjaguwar!

unnamed-26It’s really a pleasant surprise when an artist you discover in the trenches of the internet manages to hit it big… I mean, I posted about Trevor Sensor last June, trying to share with you all the Tallest Man on Earth-esque vibes of this youngster and now he’s on the incredible Jagjaguwar lineup. With this news, he’s shared the video below for “Texas Girls and Jesus Christ,” which is a song off of his upcoming debut EP by that same name. It’s a little bluesier than The Tallest Man, and the full band sound that joins him at the end makes for a bar-stomping good time. Take a listen.

Bluesy Folk From Melaena Cadiz

12471502_10153174386566290_6735933083237599141_o-2You can’t really knock slow burning folk tunes, especially when they feature exceptional vocals of a leading front woman. The slow burning folk tune of the day comes from Melaena Cadiz, and it’s a mellow track that will wind its way into your heart. The vocals are just the perfect amount of smoky and sweet, accompanied by simple acoustic guitar, but you’ll find the track is anything but simple. Cadiz, out of LA, will be releasing herlatest album, Sunfair on March 4th via Misra Records.

New Single/Video From Kevin Morby

unnamed-23We’ve been tracking Kevin Morby and his work with Woods and The Babies for a long while now, and at this point that anything this man has a part in will be some sort of magical. Today, he’s shared a new video and debuted the single, “I Have Been To The Mountain,” which is classic Kevin Morby with a bit of a pop twist to it. It’s got this stewing haze to it, made possible by Morby’s vocals and the grumble of the electric guitar which cuts in and out. Meanwhile, the beat is kind of groovy, simmering underneath it all. It’s a damn great song, and the video is interesting to say the least. Make sure you check it out below and get ready for Morby’s upcoming album,Singing Saw, which is out April 15th onDead Oceans.
