Twangy Psych Pop From Golden Haze

10420143_848088801878972_3062569001595793912_nHave you heard about Golden Haze yet? If you haven’t, it’s probably time you take a listen, as they’re about to release their self titled debut quite soon on February 19th. This latest single, “Never Comin’ Back” is quite distorted and lo-fi, but in all the right ways. The guitars warble through the mix and synths fill the empty space in the song with long, atmospheric sounds. The chorus is catchy and ready for you to sing along with the band. Short, sweet, and twangy, this track is a small gem to get you through the day. Get ready for their full length coming soon fromAutumn ToneRecords.

Even More From Bent Shapes

bentshapesMy one regret of yesterday is that I ran out of time to post this track before I had to head to the day job; it’s truly a gem of a song that will make your day. To remedy that regret, I’m posting it now, so bear with me if this is yesterday’s news to you. Bent Shapes should be on your radar by now, as their forthcoming record,Wolves of Want, will be upon us rather soon on March 11th. From the sound of this single and the previous one, the band’s got a winner on their hands. “Realization Hits,” is the single below and its got that perfect springtime anthem vibe to play with the windows down; it’s jangly rock with a hint of punk underneath and infectious nature that will have you singing right along. I’m telling you, jam this track and then go preorderWolves of Wantvia Slumberland Records.

Quirky Lo Fi From Free Cake For Every Creature

10608726_877067585703431_47325592551303463_oFree Cake For Every Creatureis afour piece out of Philadelphia that started as the project of Katie Bennett, who was lured into sharing her bedroom demos with some friends and thus the band was born. Their sound is akin to the music video below; diy, lo-fi, but all around quirky and cute. The vocals are a combination of that male/female duality that the band utilizes really well, and include little yelps and whoops. Lyrics include ridiculously adorable lines like “You are the brownie to my tv dinner but I don’t want to save you for later,” and the instrumentation is a simple mix of guitar and soft drums, but you can just hear how the band could really flesh out the sound in the live setting. I’m going to have this song stuck in my head for the rest of the day, so why shouldn’t you?

You can preorder their April 15thfull-length,Talking Quietly Of Anything With You,here via Double Double Whammy Records.

Everyone’s On Board With Acid Dad (Finally)

aciddadSo it was almost a year ago when I introduced you to Acid Dad, and told you to look out for this bandbut it looks like the rest of the internet is finally singing their rightful praise. With that said, I’m happy to see that Acid Dadhave returned with another great single from their debut EP. This track, “Fool’s Gold” is a little less tightly wound than the other tunes we’ve heard from the psych punk New Yorkers, but ever-great. I’m really appreciating the building chorus and the gang “Oohs” and “Las” that starkly contrast the gritty snarl of lead vocals. If you didn’t heed my advice before, you really ought to now!!!!!

ATX Spotlight: Rikroshi

12279037_701757619960805_6624326963952806043_nWe here at ATH are always trying to give you the latest and greatest of not only the world scene, but of our very own city. Today’s ATX spotlight falls on a new(ish) band, Rikroshi, which consists of dynamic duo Tessa Bennetch and Darryl Schomberg II. Together, these two make dark wave, synth heavy, pop music that’s a bit outside the realm of what you’re used to hearing from bands around town. When you take a listen to the track below, “Watercolor,” you’ll see what I mean–there’s a sugary impossibility to the distorted vocals and a bit of drama in the mix created by the start/stop percussion and jagged guitars. They just released their debut album yesterday, and lucky for you, they’re playing an album release this Saturday at Cheer Up Charlie’s. Get to listening and then go out Saturday and support your locals.

How’d I Miss This New Carter Tanton Track?

C.Tanton.J.Maksym.2.500So, according to the Western Vinyl Soundcloud page, this track has been up for eight days, but I’ve yet to come across the mountains of praise that it deserves, so I figured I’d share it with you. Carter Tanton hasn’t been active in a little while, but man am I glad to hear that he’s back. What’s more is that this track features the always lovely vocals of Sharon Van Etten, and though her contribution is subtle, it still adds an extra layer of pleasing harmony to the track. This song, “Twentynine Palms” is a soft blues-folk tune and it looks like it will be the first song off of Tanton’s upcoming album,Jettison The Valley which will be out March 4th through Western Vinyl. You should pre-order it here.

Too Good Not To Post: Another New Track From Porches

unnamed-20So Porches have done it again, but are you really that surprised? The internet was buzzing with praise for this band after their video/single for “Be Apart,” graced us with synth pop goodness, but they’re taking it in a slightly different direction with “Car,” which is another single off of their upcoming record, Pool. This track shows a different side to the band, more along the lines of indie rock with synth influence. I’m digging the jangle of the distorted guitar that undercuts the whole mix as well as the distinct lead vocals that command the song. Take a listen if you haven’t already and be sure to order Pool, out later this week on February 5th, from Domino Records.

Show Preview: Bully & Diet Cig @ The Parish (2.4)

d8acxxjgyqxhuiscl05eThis Thursday there’s a really great way to spend your evening and it’s taking place over at the Parish. For the low low price of 12$ you can treat yourself to a night of alt rock and punk-pop by two kick ass bands. First up are the fun pop punk sounds of up and comers Diet Cig, who put on an excellent and entrancing show; though there are only two members of the band, the dancing Alex Luciano had enough energy to carry a whole room. Headliners are Bully, whose alt-rock sounds will have you reviving your 90s grunge looks and feelings while being transfixed by the raw vocals of Alicia Bognanno. Doors are at 9, so there’s no excuse not to show up early and catch the full set of both of these bands. Chances are it’ll be loud and energetic and the perfect show for a Thursday night.

Raw Folk Pop Track From Two White Cranes

10604704_602433613200666_2067966193473209933_oTwo White Cranes have released a new single as a part of the rad Pin Pal program that Art is Hard Records is putting on. Not only can you collect some rad pins, but you’ll also receive downloads of new singles from their excellent lineup of bands, which you can find more about here. This single, “Unattached,” is a stripped down folk rock track, consisting of merely electric guitar and the mellow and sweet vocals, but there’s something compelling about this simple combination. You’re forced to focus on the lyrics here while the guitar grumbles through, and it’s easy to get enveloped in the storytelling of the song. Take a listen.
