Dance Through Your Wednesday With Future Elevators

unnamed-5Oh man, this track is so good. So good that you’ll be streaming it through the rest of the day and then probably for the rest of the week. Future Elevators are a brand new group out of Alabama, but their sleek sound transcends place and belongs to a futuristic setting. It’s got a rock base, fleshed out with synths and radio-ready vocals, and that stomping beat. This track, “Modern World,” is the first track from the upcoming debut album from this band, which is due out at the beginning of next year on February 19th via Communicating Vessels. Take a listen, get down, and then repeat.

This song, “Bikini Party/Birthday Kill” has this excellent chorus amidst the growling rock, where the lead vocalist shrieks “I don’t want to go to your bikini party, I prefer a good Birthday kill” which nails my feelings exactly and has enough attitude to make you feel good when you scream along with it. Take a listen below and get down with this badass tune.

ATX Spotlight: Nic Armstrong & The Thieves

unnamed-4Confession: this is, and this isn’t, an Austin Spotlight post. Nic Armstrong & The Thieves are not native Austinites, but are British bred. Their latest EP, however, Negative Slant was recorded here at our very own Cacophony Recordings, so we’ve finally got some claim to fame on these psych-esque, British blues-inspired rock and rollers. Take a listen to the title track below, and you’ll find the band in a buzzy blaze of glory– stomping piano, slight tinkering of tambourine, and driving percussion all great you with warmth. They’ll playing the next few Wednesdays in their residency at Hole In The Wall, so be sure to check them out. Details can be found here.

Show Review: Shopping @ The Mohawk (PS They’re Playing Again Tonight)

SHOPPINGThis show review will be rather brief– my apologies to openers Xetas and Feral Future for the omission of a description of their sets. It wasn’t for lack of desire that I had to miss what I’m sure were rowdy and glorious sets, but work inhibited me from arriving until right before London’s Shopping took the stage. And take the stage they did– the three members perfectly distributed themselves on the small inside stage of The Mohawk and began their infectious and seamless post punk jams. When I say seamless, I mean that though this band is only a three piece, each member and element go together so well that when they get going it’s hard to really differentiate one from the next, and the same can be said for the vocals. They gather together to form gang-esque grit, and the result is a perfect balance of rawness and pleasant sound. Each member brought their respective energy to the stage–whole bodies thrust into their performance. Lead guitarist Rachel Aggs bounced up and down, her hair flopping back and forth to the jangly riffs she kept doling out. Nothing could really stop the group from impressing the crowd with their wonderful tunes, not even guitar/amp troubles stood a chance from diminishing the night. Rather, it added to the charm of the group and their edginess. I’m telling you, their live show further enforced just how excellent Consumer Complaints is, and brought a smile to everyone’s faces. If you missed it, you are definitely in luck– the band’s Houston show has been cancelled, so they’re gracing our presence again this evening!!!! Find out details for that here.

Groovy Chillwave From Twin Cabins

twin cabinsTwin Cabins is an LA based project that haven’t been on the radar in a few years, but I’m happy to declare their return. I’m not sure when exactly this single was released, but they’ve got a new(ish) track called “Painfully Obvious” and have a new album coming for you later this Friday on the 13th. This track is all sorts of good– minimalist soundscape with striking moments of instrumentation and chime in and out of the mostly empty space. Take a listen below and see what I’m talking about; there’s really no way to not move your body to this beat. Harmless Fantasies, that new full length is going to be available on limited edition vinyl via Sunset & Hyperion and you can preorder it here.

Show Preview: Shopping @ The Mohawk (11/11)

shoppinMaybe you’re still shaking off the cobwebs of tiredness from your eyes from this weekend, but it’s time for you to muster up the strength to hit up the Mohawk tomorrow night for what will surely be an evening well worth your time. Headlining the inside stage is London’s Shopping, who have been wowing us with their post-punk jangly jams for sometime now, so it’s exciting to see how this sound will translate to the live setting; something tells me these tracks are going to be even more robust and require some dancing shoes. Opening up for them are locals Xetas and Feral Future, so be sure to get there early and support your locals. And if you feel like double-dipping and making the most of your night, get there even earlier to catch Youth Lagoon and Moon King on the outside stage at 6:30. Otherwise, doors for the inside stage are at 9 and tickets are 10$…get them here.

Keep The Post-Punk Party Going With Holy Esque

holyesqyeIt’s been a pretty damn good week for new post-punk tracks, so let’s keep the ball rolling with this new track from Scottish band, Holy Esque. This track, “Silences” is not so heavy as we’ve been frequently hearing within the post-punk genre, but it seems rather to be a bit of a breezier take. The guitars grumble and glide through the mix, with just enough grit to match the lead growling vocals. Meanwhile, the drums create a sort of bounce to the track that will have your head nodding. Take a listen below and enjoy.

Let’s Hurtle Through With Tiny Ruins

1490707_10153443851393636_4155216643887980784_o

We got off to a foggy start this morning in the ATX but not to worry, I’ve got this sweet tune from Auckland, New Zealand’s Tiny Ruins to get you through today. I’ve been a fan of the quiet folksy tunes of Tiny Ruins for a little while, so I’m pleased to share with you “Hurtling Through,” which is the title track off the forthcoming EP from the band. It’s a soft number, like you’ve already known from this group, but one that highlights the magnificent and tranquil vocals from Holly Fullbrook. You should definitely take a listen and keep your eyes and ears pealed for that EP, which is slated for a November 27th via Bella Union.
