Turn It Up Loud For This Post Punk From FEWS

fewsSwedish band FEWS have just signed to Play It Again Sam, which means that they deserve to be on your to-listen list. This track “The Zoo” from the group of gentleman is a three and a half minute cyclone of post punk, that whirls through with its violent guitars and brooding darkness. It doesn’t take long at all to be swept up in the tune, which makes me believe that their upcoming debut album, that we should expect sometime early next year, will be one not to miss. Take a listen below.

FFF Artist Spotlight: Mikal Cronin

mikal croninWe’re a week out from Fun Fun Fun Fest 2015, and you should probably be getting your schedule nailed down, so I’m here to help you out. Mikal Cronin is an act that’s sure to make your list of highlights on Monday after the fest when all is said and done. Once you press play on the single “Made My Mind Up” from back in January of this year, you’ll be enamored with the breezy alternative rock that Cronin brings to the table. FFF Artist Spotlight: Toro Y Moi

toroI feel like you all should already be familiar with Toro Y Moi, but on the off chance that you aren’t, or perhaps forgot that this gentleman will be gracing our presence shortly at Fun Fun Fun Fest, I thought I would remind you just what we have to look forward to. Toro Y Moi, or Chaz Bundick, has carved out a name for himself over the past five years with his groovy pop tunes with heavy psych influences. His music will be perfect for the festival setting– light enough to dance to in the sunshine, but grounded enough to hold your attention.  Listen to “Buffalo” below off of his most recent release, What For? and be sure to check out the swirling and quirky psych pop from Toro Y Moi at 4:45 Friday on the Orange Stage, or a DJ set from the gentleman (Les Sins) over at Vulcan Gas Company at 11:45 Friday night.

FFF Artist Spotlight: Viet Cong

VietCong

There’s been a lot of controversy recently around The Artist Formally Known As Viet Cong, but despite all that nominal hubbub, this four member group of post punkers are swinging through our town to play some heavy rock at Fun Fun Fun Fest. Viet Cong’s self titled album came out at the beginning of this year, and since then the band’s made waves with their dark wave post punk. Word on the street is that they’re one of the bands that you shouldn’t miss and that everyone will be talking about. So take a listen below and check them out on the Orange Stage on Friday at 3:35 or at The Sidewinder at 12:15 Saturday Night.

New Bluesy Tune From Cicada Rhythm

cicadaWhile I normally am the folksiest and bluesiest member of the ATH crew, I’ll have to admit that this track is pretty blue-grassy, even for me, but damn it, they’ve won me over. The heart of Georgia’s Cicada Rhythm is comprised of Andrea DeMarcus and Dave Kirslis, whose sharp vocals cut as smoothly as the delicate classical and folk elements in this song. “Dirty Hound,” has this slow creeping rhythm to it, but one that alternates with a more up tempo beat, spliced with growling electric guitar. If you’re digging this track like I am, be sure to check out the band’s debut, self titled LP that’s out this Friday via New West Records.

Melancholically Beautiful Track From MONEY

unnamed-3Sometimes, all you need is a good sad song to get you through the day, and  maybe it’s the Wednesday blues, but this track from Money is really hitting the spot. The vocals channel emo rock of the 90s, while the instrumentation is a blend of orchestral folk sounds that blend with the vocals and lyrics to generate a really moving piece of music. Lucky for us, MONEY have a new album, Suicide Songs, coming out in the near future on January 29th on Bella Union.

FFF Fest Artist Spotlight: Joanna Gruesome

joanna_gruesome_2015Fun Fun Fun Fest is a week and some change away, so I’m going to bring you more previews of artists that deserve your time and attention at Auditorium Shores or at FFF Nites. Today’s spotlight falls on Joanna Gruesome , a band out of Cardiff whose punkish pop tunes are bound to be the perfect atmosphere for the festival. The band is touring in support of their most recent album, Peanut Butter, that came out earlier this year which has been calling the public’s attention to the group and their effortless dichotomy between harsh rock and roll and sugary sweet vocals. Take a listen below to the lead single from that release, and then check them out at the festival. Joanna Gruesome play Saturday at 1:20 on the Orange Stage as well as at 9:15 at RIP Red 7 (611 E. 7th) on Friday Night. Also, don’t forget to pick up your wristband early at The Funderdome and take advantage of all the extra benefits the folks at Transmission are offering you:

Major Friday Jam From Papa

papaAt the end of a long work week, or at the continuation of a work week for those of us who don’t work a 9-5, you need to stop and take a moment to just jam. Papa, hailing out of LA, have got the perfect new tune for doing just this called “Hold On.” This track is a funky, dance ready groove with definite Bowie swagger to it that will surely set your feet to moving through to those weekend vibes. Show Preview: Cross Record @ Cheer Ups (Tonight)

10922432_512148512257410_7508773176381109828_n-2Once again, there’s tons to do on a weeknight in Austin, but this will be one of those shows you decide to go to last minute that makes your week. I was geeking out pretty hard over this folksy and beautiful new track from Cross Record that was released last week, so I’m stoked to get to hear it in the live setting, as well as the rest of their folksy catalogue. Not to mention, the bill tonight at Cheer Up Charlie’s is stacked with other great local acts like Future Music and Silent Land Time Machine that will delight you with their and electro-acoustic psych soundscapes. Doors aren’t until 9:30, and the best part is that it’s completely free. Come out and support the locals, won’t you?

Show Review: Mac Demarco @ Stubbs (10.20)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetExpectations were quite high for Tuesday night at Stubbs. Riding high off the release of Another One, Mac Demarco and company came to a sold out venue to share the new tunes as well as jam out some of the old. Playing to quite the young crowd, though one who has probably seen the band in some capacity—over the past year, Mac has played not only one, but two of Austin’s festivals. For those who have seen Demarco’s live act, the night was quite predictable, but nevertheless enjoyable. Read on for my full recap.
