Quirky Little Number From Balthazar

10981199_10152707175535814_7541172100670676993_nBalthazar are a Belgian quintet who have been going at it for a little while; their 2012 album Rats gave them some international fame to follow up their 2010 debut. If you haven’t heard of them, now’s your chance to play catch up and take a listen to the jazzy number they’ve got for you below. “The Silence” comes off their freshly released album,  Thin Wallsand it is a track that hedges the line between loose and controlled. There’s a sort of sinister tone that emerges with the horns and the group vocals that gives the track some snarl that I’m enjoying. Take a listen.

Zone Out With With Zone Out

12032144_959241307447382_6959408142532804712_nI know ACL is tomorrow, but honestly it feels like it could be weeks away at the point from which I stand. Lucky for me, and maybe for you, Zone Out is here to help speed up that transition with their transfixing blend of electro pop. When I listen to this track, “Inside,” I’m transported to a land of bliss; the vocals are so clear they seem translucent and the electronic elements such as the percussion and synth sounds gracefully glide through the song and you feel as though it has led you by the hand to a different, perhaps more peaceful world. And who can deny the groove of that instrumental outro Look out for more from Zone Out in the future, as this seems to be the first single for their upcoming 2016 album.

Jam Through Friday With Surfy Psych From Young Rival

yrSometimes bands blend genre in all the right ways, and today’s exemplifier of that nuanced skill is Young Rival, out of Hamilton, Canada. They’ve got this fresh new single called “Scruples,” which is below and is a brief jam of distorted and fuzz coated surf-esque guitars. This song is simply groovy; those guitars are twangy and tart and the perfect balance of tight knit and loose, while the vocals are a bit of a wild card, distortedly playing through different levels of croon and conversation. Though only two and a half minutes long, I’ve found myself playing this one over and over again. Get hooked and get ready for the newest full-length release from these gentlemen called Interior Light. You can preorder this sick looking pink and blue record, which is out on October 16th via Paper Bag Records, here.

Another Dreamy Gem From Hazel English

11120072_1404974219821106_1760115655601501812_oAre you in the mood for lighter than air dream pop? If so, I’ve got just the right track for you from Hazel English. “Fix” is the second overwhelmingly lush single in a row from Oakland based Hazel English, and it’s sure to make your Friday. The guitars swim around gracefully in the mix, greeting you the moment you press play on the song and mellowly jam with you the whole way through. Meanwhile, those impossibly sugary vocals are omnipresent, between the oohs and hooky chorus that chimes in with “Take me away again” you can’t hide from the sweetness of the dreamy pop. If you like this track, be sure to check out Hazel English‘s EP Never Going Home, which will be released sometime this fall and has got that summer-turned fall vibe.

Fresh Pop Track From Spritzer

10494557_627208600742824_3610293388907063125_nEarlier this year, I shared with you an early cut of this killer pop tune “Melt” from Matt Meade’s new project, Spritzer. Flash forward a few months and Meade has yet another winner on his hands with “Don’t Die, Kill Me,” which is the song you’ll find below. When you press play on this number, you’re immediately grabbed by the huge sound of synths, guitar and building drums, which create this sort of eerie pop blast. This transitions to a more mellow combination of jangly-surf guitar, Meade’s distorted and yet soothingly sweet vocals, and clacking percussion. As the song progresses, that synth creeps its way back in, and the band’s got a hit on their hands.  This track is part of a debut EP, Don’t Die, which features these two refreshing pop tunes. Take a listen to it below and get ready for big things from Spritzer.

Gorgeous Folk Track From Molybden

0003019393_10Molybden, or Tess Seipp, is an artist currently living in Austin, but is a native of Marfa, Texas. Her sound is that of soothing folk, but in her vocals there’s an air of mystery that begs repeated listening. These few new tracks from her latest release, are soft tunes, as exemplified by “Pleasant Violent” below, which is a lovely song to please the ears.  Pleasant Violent : Bedroom Recordings, vol. 2 is out now via Punctum Records, so head on over here and pick that up and look out for future releases from Molybden— word on the street is she’s got a second full length coming sometime early next year.

Salad Boys – Metalmania

TIM099_SaladBoys_frontCover__72361.1437766489.1280.1280Rating: ★★★☆☆

We seem to be in the era of jangly rock and roll. That is to say these days have brought the indie rock scene to a point in which the norm is now those angular workings of guitar riffs in whatever genre you like; there’s the stoner rock of bands like Mac Demarco, or more tightly wound pop groups. Regardless, in order to stand out, you’ve gotta make the jangle your own, taking it in a direction different than before. Enter Salad Boys of New Zealand, whose sound ranges within the genre, from laid back to melt your face off in the mere jump of a song on Metalmania.

This group of gentlemen open the album with a delicate sound on “Here’s No Use–” with the winding guitar work that won’t quit and the urgent yet soft vocals of Joe Sampson, the song seems fairly subtle at first. The drums are barely there, merely gentle clicking to match the rhythm of the guitar as it loops in its neat and clean sound. As the track progresses, the elements gain a bit of traction; secondary vocals join the mix and the guitars are doubled up to round out the opening track. The next song, “Dream Date,” shows the other, less chilled out, rock side of Salad Boys– the guitars are faster and heavier, drums join the mix, adding a thick layer of percussive sheen with the abundant crashing of cymbals.

These two directions of tracks seem to account for the direction of sound that Salad Boys take on this record; you get the laid back sun-bleached indie rock of the first track, or the more high-energy rock of the second track. Each style seems to suit the band’s sound fairly well, and the back and forth doesn’t feel like whiplash as it does a trip through changing terrain, soft and lush at one moment and biting rock the next.

Most signs point to Metalmania to be a grower of an album– while each track is pleasing to the ears and begs for you to play it outside at a barbecue or driving around in your car with the wind blowing through, there aren’t clear standout tracks. Originally, I thought it was when the band ripped into the rockier side of their sound, but those with mild tonality seem to grasp my attention just as much. Perhaps in time, these numbers will be apparent, or perhaps the tunes on this album are a little too mild. Regardless, I look forward to hear what Salad Boys have in store for us next.
