Kick Off Your Day With Sons of Rico

sonsofricoThese days it seems like there’s a surge in great acts coming out of Australia, so I wasn’t too surprised to find out Sons of Rico hail from Melbourne. This track, “What Am I Doing Here?” from the four piece is a bright indie rock gem that has a fun dance groove underlying the whole thing. I’m really enjoying the intermittent group vocals as well as the way the song gets a little darker as it progresses; the light electric guitar from the beginning gets a little textured and gritty by the end, but the song is still groovy and fun and a right jam that you need to take a listen to right now.

Chill Psychedelic Track From Animal Eyes

animal eyesSometimes you just need a spunky little twist in your listening catalogue to spice things up. Lucky for you, Portland’s Animal Eyes have a new song called, “Mushroom Hunter” from their upcoming LP called Where We Go that is perfect for this purpose. The track builds on the quirky psychedelic aspects, layering in more and more subtle sounds to the climactic finish. What starts as just a gentle psych guitar riff soon spirals off in different ways to make the track great. Take a listen and look out for that new record coming this fall.

Last summer, I had the pleasure of traveling to Barcelona for Primavera Sound, and while Spain may not be on the horizon for me this summer, Wisconsin is. In a few short weeks, we’ll be hitting the grounds of the first ever Eaux Claires festival, the love child project of Justin Vernon (Bon Iver/Volcano Choir) and Aaron Dessner (The National). While we’ll give you updates live from the festival so you can live vicariously through us and figure out which acts you need to see when they make their way through our neck of the woods, you can read on for the top five things we’re looking forward to about the inaugural festival.

After the release of their great first record, Consumer Complaints, it brings me great pleasure to announce that Shopping are returning with a sophomore record called Why Choose on FatCat Records this coming October 2nd. With this news they’ve also given us a taste of what’s to come on this new record with, “Why Wait” that’s below for your ears. Like we’ve heard from Shopping before, you get the super crisp angular electric guitar work that cuts through the track sharply and up-tempo drums that seem to speed impossibly up as the song progresses. It’s a song that will certainly get you dancing. Get your Pre-Order on here.

Diet Cig Share New Single

dietcig

I’m pretty sure we’ve shared some other great tracks from New York’s Diet Cig, and this is a yet another testament of their deserving place in your listening catalogue. They duo has a new single out digitally as of today called “Sleep Talk,” and you can take a listen to it below. You’ll note the prominent vocal performance of Alex Luciano, whose honest vocals and raw delivery dominate the song as she sings about a return home. Then you have the drums that take the wheel of the track and bring the tempo to a new speed as the song gets a little wild within the alt-rock genre. The single and it’s b-side, “Dinner Date” are out in physical format on September 18th through Art is Hard and Father/Daughter Records. Pre-order it here.

Ultra Lo-Fi/ Punk From Childbirth

nastygrrlsIf you’re looking for pretty and clean girl pop then you’ve come to the wrong post. Childbirth is a supergroup comprised of members from Chastity Belt, Tacocat and Pony Time and word on the street is that they’re coming back with their sophomore record, Women’s Rights which is due October 2nd on Suicide Squeeze Records. This single from that record is called “Nasty Grrls,” and features perfectly imperfect punk vocals that chime in and out of the mix enumerating the rough edges and habits of these nasty gurlz while the guitars are fuzzy and lo-fi. The whole track will lodge itself into your brain for hours if you’re not careful, but maybe that’s a good thing. Get nasty with these ladies.

Punk Track From PWR BTTM

pwrbttm

PWR BTTM are a punk duo comprised of Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce who have put out a few EPs and demos, but are awaiting the release of their first full length record Ugly Cherries.  The title track from that upcoming record is below, and when you listen you’ll hear classic punk elements, but what makes this song striking for me are the vocals, which softens the vibe a bit and is different from what you would expect. Meanwhile, the guitar is still buzzy and those vocals gain grit and teeth as the song goes on. Lookout for more from these two and get ready for the new record due out September 18th via Father/Daughter Records and Miscreant Records.

Tranquil Guitar Duet Thursday

guitarThis is a little different than what I normally share with you all, but nonetheless something that deserves your attention. James Elkington and Nathan Salsburg are on their way to release their sophomore album of guitar duets called Ambsace on September 18th, but before that record comes out through Paradise of Bachelors, the gentlemen have given us a delightful track to sink our teeth into. This song below, “Up of Stairs” is three minutes and forty nine seconds of sublime acoustic guitar work, blending both folk and americana sound. This was the first song I chose to listen today, and I can say that it was a calm and serene start to my day. Won’t you join me?

American Culture Share New Demos

americancultureA few months ago, I fell in love with American Culture and their record, Pure American Gum, in all its noisy rock and roll glory. I’m pleased to share with you some raw demos that the band has crafted in the wake of that album. Below is just one of the rough cuts that American Culture has put up on their Soundcloud page, but to me the song sounds pretty great as it is. It’s got that fuzzy, ultra lo-fi production quality to it that we’ve come to expect from the band as well as the hybrid of crisp electric guitar riffs cutting through the whole track. Enjoy the bonus tracks.

Ultimate Painting Bring The (Sanctioned) Blues

ultimate paintingAs Ultimate Painting prep to release Green Lanes on August 7th via Trouble In Mind, they’ve shared yet another solid single with us from that upcoming record. This time around, the duo have got a hooky little number with “(I’ve Got The) Sanctioned Blues,” which has sunny guitar riffs that patter through the whole track. Simultaneously, the vocals are bright and crisp as they sing about life under a conservative British government. Check out the tune below and enjoy the sun bleached psychedelia from these gentlemen.
