Classic Punk From Vaguess

vaguessOh man, you know it’s a good track when you get shade from Nathan for beating him to post it. Vaguess (pronounced Vegas) is the moniker of this project from Vinny Vaguess, and the best punk rock band out of the L.A area that you haven’t heard yet. On the cusp of releasing a compilation of the best tracks from their series of cassette tapes, Vaguess has done you the favor of making the lo-fi grit and gristle accessible to you, and once you’re done listening to “Danny’s Park” below, you’ll surely go show your appreciation by preordering the Bodhi Collection here . What’s not to love about the gang vocals, rambunctiously tinny percussion, and twangy electric guitars?

Something Different From Lewis Del Mar

lewisNow, this song is a little outside the realm of what normally catches my attention, but something about this start and stop indie rock song beckons me to share it with you all. Lewis Del Mar is an act from Rockaway Beach, NY, and while not much is known about the act as this is the debut track, what I can tell you is this song is a whole lot of action all at once. At first, I was reluctant;  you press play, the guitar greet you along with a slight bit of synth along with the vocals and the sound seems a bit empty, but then the track progresses, that crunchy percussion joins and the vocals gain some power. By the end, after everything came together I was engrossed in the huge sound. What do you think?

New To You: Smooth Ends

smooth endsFriday’s are all about celebrating; the end of a work week for some, an excuse to get out and into town for others. Whatever your weekend has in store for you, do yourself a favor and take a listen to this sweet sweet jam from Smooth Ends below. It’s not a brand new track, but when I heard it I knew I had to share the kid jangle-jazz pop track with you, as it just simply screams summer. This group is a four piece based out of London, though formed by two gentlemen from Argentina, and they’ve recently put out an EP of five tracks called Magic Johnson. You can listen to the rest of that summer perfect EP here, and look out for these guys.

Funky Indie Rock From The Heart Strings

TheHeartStrings1The Heart Strings is the project of London based Todd Roache, and this track, “Beautiful Abyss” is a declaration of the eclectic and funky twist he’s put on alternative rock. This song is a grouping of musical layers that combine in a lush manner; the synths waft in and out along with “oohs and ahhs” while the percussion and guitars are somewhat crunchier, adding an extra layer of texture. When the chorus soars in, you can’t help but be taken aback by everything that’s working together to make for a delightful and interesting indie rock track. “Beautiful Abyss” is out officially on August 7th via Grandpa Stan Records.

Bully – Feels Like

bully-feels-likeRating: ★★★½☆

It’s not too terribly often that you get word of a pop-punk band like young four piece, Bully who have origins in Nashville. But this group, led by front woman Alicia Bognanno, hail from Tennessee and have put together an album filled with crunchy punk guitar hooks with catchy pop choruses and beyond powerful vocals that will grab you by the collar and not let go for its entirety.

“I Remember” is the opening track to end all opening tracks– it’s a forceful introduction to the band’s sound. The fast paced percussion and shredding guitars are the first things you hear, and then you get Bognanno’s distorted and cutty vocals, which sound as though they may give out at any second as she screams out declarations of memories both crass and tender. There are also moments of reprieve on this number where these vocals are softened, but that is only for a second before you’re back with Bully as they rip though this punk-pop opener.

This first track is merely a bite of the bite that this band has in store for you on this debut album, and to me, the bite is where Bully shines the brightest. Songs that use the off/on switch to mix the two genres are the highlights for me, like “Trash.” This song is as about as metal as the band gets, starting slow, and the vocals are, dare I say, delicate, and then surging into the chorus with fiery heat and Bognanno’s growling vocals. Earlier on the record you get somewhat subtle, “Brainfreeze,” which falls third in the track order, and while the vocals are still grainy and gritty, this song is a bit more refined than the others. Here is where the band strikes the balance between punk and pop– this song sounds like what would happen if a punk band covered a radio ready pop song, which is far from a bad thing. Another definite highlight is late track, “Milkman,” which is a catchy track with a hardcore ending. The bulk of this album is a solid mix of tunes which will catch your ear with their unique sound.

Feels Like is a rapid fire blend of punk attitude mixed with the goodness of pop sensibility. For a debut album, it makes for a great introduction to Bully, and also a good summer album to turn up loud as the heat begins to turn up on us. I look to the future to see what Bully has in store for a sophomore effort.

Fashionably Late To The Party: Flyte

flyteOk, bear with me here. This track has been out for a little bit, but I just heard it and knew it was something that I needed to share with you all. Flyte are a group of four gents from London who create alternative rock jams, and they’ve got a real winner of a track with “Closer Together.” When you click play on the song below, you’ll be greeted with endlessly looping guitar riffs that overlap and meld into each other. Meanwhile, the vocals compliment these guitars with their own half-falsetto’d blend of catchy hooks. To me, this band has a Mystery Jets meets Foals sound to their indie rock, and I’m really digging this song, especially the instrumental build at the very end.

More To Love From Beach Baby

I’m pretty sure with each new track that surfaces from UK band Beach Baby that us folks at ATH are falling further and further in love with the band, so I had to post the recently emerged B-Side, “U R.” This track is just as spot on surf pop and jangly guitar filled as the songs that we’ve heard before from the group, but here we get a little nuance in the subtle and detailed percussion as well as the smooth vocal delivery from the gentlemen. Beach Baby‘s sound is perfect for summer, and if they keep on rolling out these great tracks, I can only imagine what the band has in store for the future. Get listening before they blow up.

“Dead” Video From Darts

dartsWe don’t normally post a lot of music videos, but when I came across this one by Darts, I simply couldn’t resist, as the song is awesome and the music video creepy, yet entertaining. The song, “Dead,” is an angst filled roller coaster ride, and the male vocals definitely bring you thoughts of Modest Mouse, but what’s different about this song as well as the band are the presence of the contrasting female vocals which add a whole different aspect to the sound. Watch the disturbingly awesome video below and jam along with Darts.

Wake Up With Dreamy Rock From DIV I DED

divided2It’s a Monday, it’s been rainy in Austin and I was having trouble kicking things into gear until I heard this track from Czech band DIV I DED. “Late Awakening” is a track taken from the band’s upcoming album, Born To Sleep, which is coming out July 17th via Fleeting Youth Records. The song kicks off with its cutting guitars that echo through the space of the sound while the vocals from Viktorie Marksova provide the perfect balance of tempered sweetness to the mix. Take a listen below, wake up, and get ready for Born to Sleep out July 17th.

I Like This Fever The Ghost Track

img-fever-the-ghost_131527451894You may have been hearing from your friends about how you need to listen to this band, Fever The Ghost, and now I’m going to tell you that it’s finally time to get fully acquainted. In September, the band plans to release their first full length LP, Zirconium Meconium. This track, “Vervain (Dreams Of An Old Wooden Cage)” has sort of an Animal Collective vibe to it, but with a more psychedelic rock spin on it. It begins slowly and gives you a lot of stop and go, but the guitars are heavyset and really pick up at the end, while the electronic elements lighten up the track as they swirl through, providing a hint of whimsy to the tune. Get excited.
