A Little Late To The Party: Trevor Sensor

trevorThere’s something about the isolated sound of just a man with his guitar and his soulful voice that always manages to capture my attention. So when I heard this track, “The Reaper Man,” by young gun Trevor Sensor, I was immediately reminded of The Tallest Man On Earth and enamored with the raw power of Sensor’s vocals as it winds through the catchy chorus of this song. Though this track may be a few months old, I think it’s important that it reaches your ears now before Sensor really takes off.

Mild Indie Rock From Bronx Cheerleader

SONY DSCBronx Cheerleader are a four piece from St. Catharines, Ontario who are gaining attention for their indie rock. This new single, “Pell Mell,” is a dreamy swirl of of a track that begins with chimes and tinkling percussion before joined by the vocals that waft in slowly and gently. While the track never really bursts forth with a ton of force,  I’m enjoying the reserved and soft approach to indie rock that is at once pretty and intriguing in sound. Sometimes you need those delicate songs that please your ears with their well crafted nature. Take a listen below.

Jangly Jam From Canyons

canyonsCanyons from Newcastle are an up-and-coming group who formed last summer and have been working on crafting their sound: which melds both nostalgic pop of yesteryear as well as angsty alternative rock. This song they’ve got for you called “ISO,” shows this merging of genres perfectly. I’m digging the dueling male and female vocals with just the right tinge of emotional power combined with the mix of jangly guitar and all out streamlined alternative slick electric guitar. Take a listen and hear for yourself while I’ll be keeping my ears pricked for more from this group.

Clean Indie Rock From City Calm Down

citycalmdownCity Calm Down are an act from Melbourne, Australia, who are just about to embark on their trip to indie rock stardom with their debut album, In A Restless House, which is set to be released September 11th.  Now, City Calm Down have an interesting sound to them: the indie rock instrumentation reminds me of the eighties, especially in the way that the guitar riffs match the vocals note for note during the chorus. This song “Rabbit Run” is a nice little mix of new with old influences, and you should take a listen.

Green Buzzard Combine Lo-Fi and Alternative

greenbuzzardWhen wading through all the fresh tracks on the internet sometimes you find some good tunes buried in the mix. This track, “Zoo Fly” from Green Buzzard, is a great example of such a find, and it combines that good old 90’s alternative sound with the lo-fi sound that’s become so popular as of late. These Aussies are getting ready to release this single as a 7″ on August 21st through Mermaid Avenue Records. You can watch the music video for this track here.

Show Review: Other Lives @ The Mohawk (6.11)

Other LivesThursday had the ATH crew out in full swing to catch a night of great music and good times at The Mohawk. Early door times had openers taking the stage with the sun not quite yet set, but that didn’t deter Dark Rooms and Riothorse Royale from providing entertaining sets to a growing crowd for headliners Other Lives.

If you weren’t there for this night of stunning tunes, sucks to suck, but read on to see just what you missed out on. Or if you were lucky enough to be there, relive the night and click through some rad photos by the ineffable B.Gray.

Simplistic Yet Delightful Folk From Scott Bartenhagen

scottCalifornia’s Scott Bartenhagen just signed to the roster over at New Professor Music of L.A., and in a few short weeks on June 30th, he’ll be releasing an EP called Black Dane. “Beacons,” the song below from that EP, shows the songwriters ability to spin a delightful folksy tune with very little outside of vocals, guitar, and minimal percussion, that is, until the track is almost finished. When the song starts it seems quite mild, and while that is essentially the case, where the heart of this track lies is in the vocal performance of Bartenhagen, whose voice is crisp until he pushes it to its bluesy brink. Though mild, the song takes off at the end and adds in other elements to fully bring it alive. Take a listen.

Funky New Wave(ish) Pop From Paul Smith & The Intimations

shoot dec 06 press

You may know Paul Smith from his frontman position in Maximo Park, but you probably didn’t know that this gentleman also puts out his own music as well (If you did know this, my apologies). He’s shared with us a track from a new record that he and his backing band, The Intimations, are going to be releasing on August 21st called Contradictions. This first song, “Coney Island (4th of July)” is a proper pop groove: the guitar sound twangs in as the new-wave vocals paint a picture of a time and a place in the past. I’m enjoying this combination of 80’s pop and modern elements. What do you think?

Jesse Payne Gives You Post Folk

jessepWhatever post folk is, I’m not one hundred percent sure, but Jesse Payne has been deemed thus. Citing origins in the Southeastern part of the U.S., his sound blends americana and folk elements as well as these subtle yet enticing vocals. I’m sharing this track with you today from Heirloom, Payne’s upcoming record which is set to be released on August 14th through Capture Music. “Origins,” opens with this infectious guitar riff that spirals out through the track and makes for a simmering folk track.

Another One From Heather Woods Broderick

heather+woods+broderickChances are that if I hear a new track from Heather Woods Broderick along the way to the July 10th release of her latest LP, Glider, I’ll be throwing it your way so you can get as excited as I am for this new album. The track we’ve got today, “Mama Shelter,” is one that features the vocal performance at the very core of the song. Instrumentally, it’s pretty minimalistic, but sharp waves of synth juxtapose with the twang of the vocals to make it sound like an electro-americana track. Take a listen and look out for Glider out on Western Vinyl soon.
