Shimmery Dream Pop From Savage Sister

savage sisterSavage Sister are a three part outfit from Chicago that make dream pop and shoegaze music. I stumbled upon this track, “Pale Surrender” and knew I had to share it with you all, as this is the perfect song to turn up loud on a Friday. Drenched in reverb, the whole tune seems to just barely waft in through your speakers; the high pitched synths dominate the track, but as it progresses you get some more of the percussion in the mix, as well as the incomprehensible vocals, which work as another instrumental element to the sound. Savage Sister have an album in the works called Speechless, but the date is TBA, so keep an ear out.

ATX Spotlight: Tiger Waves Are Back

tiger wavesWay back in 2012 Tiger Waves were on the cusp of releasing an album, but sometimes things go awry and plans fall through. The future seemed bleak for that album to ever find its way to your speakers and your hearts, that is until yesterday, when these locals posted this lost album in its entirety on their Bandcamp page for you to delight in the tracks that should have been. In this way, these masters of indie pop have announced that Tiger Waves are back, and we should be paying attention again. Are you? Take a listen to one of the lost songs below, called “Joyous Occasion,” which is a solid pop gem and crosses surf and electro pop with a Shins-esque spin, and lookout for new tracks from the band soon.

Grungey Electro Rock From Infinity Girl

10644126_668392986601458_7974860044699403314_oInfinity Girl are a four piece, Brooklyn based outfit making gritty indie rock with electronic elements. On the track below, “Firehead,” the band starts out with a bit of eerie organ sounds and as the track progresses, these sounds don’t stop, but the band layers in sound upon sound to make the track spiral darkly downwards to a smoky finish. It’s a good indie rock track, and it makes me excited to see what this band’s new LP Harm has in store for us. It’s out August 28th on Topshelf Records.

Jangly Pop From Snowy Nasdaq and Snowy Life

snowyOk, so weirdest and longest band name goes to Snowy Nasdaq and Snowy Life, and while I’m not really sure what’s going on with that name, I do know that this new track from these Australians is a gem. “Ironic Life,” is a jangly spin around the room with added streaming synths which add another layer of pop texture to the mix. The whole track is a fast paced and jam of a good time, with the distorted vocals making it a little different than your average pop tune.

OtherLives-EmilyUlmer

Date 6.11.15
Location The Mohawk
Doors 7:00 pm
Tickets 15$ Here

Thursday night at the Mohawk is looking like it’s shaping up to be the place to be as far as shows go around Austin. Headliners and Oklahomans Other Lives are touring in support of their latest effort, Rituals, which showed the band going in an sultry electronic direction and featured a ton of tracks I’m excited to see fleshed out in a live setting. Not to mention the chance to hear the rest of the bands’ stunning catalogue of dark orchestral rock music. Opening up for them are Dark Rooms (Dallas) and Riothorse Royal (L.A), the likes of which should bring a variety of sounds to the night. I’ve included tracks by both of them below to entice you to show up early to the Mohawk tomorrow night.

What Do You Think Of This New Gardens & Villa Track?

332994_10150324822454759_200890353_oSanta Barbara’s Gardens & Villa are back today with a new album announcement and single titled “Fixations.” It’s got a nice little groove to it, as most Gardens & Villa tracks tend to, but it spans out into a partially buzzy space. Sure, there are the pulsing synths, but the guitar parts are garage-y and the vocals provide a nice touch of lightness to the mix that make for a breezy pop track. I’m enjoying the vibe on this one and will be looking out for more from the band as we get closer to their album release. Music For Dogs is out August 21st on Secretly Canadian.

Stripped Indie Rock From Head Clouds

11170316_1108549499161524_5691889641422261214_n

Head Clouds is a Melbourne act fronted by Jayke Maddison, and while they’re fairly under the radar right now that’s all about to change with this track, “New Light Of The Equinox.” What starts as a stripped down indie rock song, playing on the soft vocals of Maddison and gentle guitars soon transitions into what sounds to me like a mix between Grizzly Bear and The Walkmen, which means there’s everything to love about this sweet jam. Apparently this track is from an upcoming EP that the band’s been working on for a while, so keep your ears pricked for that. You can bet I’ll be posting about it.

Another Good One From Azure Blue

unnamed (2)Just as Azure Blue is a few weeks out from releasing his third studio LP in Beneath The Hill I Smell The Sea, Tobias Isaksson has it us once more with another new wave electro pop gem to tantalize us for this new record. “Tragedy & Changes,” sounds like a straight-from-the-eighties hit, complete with super faded and breathy vocals plus never ending drum machine beats that patter through the song. What I’m really digging though, is the very end of the song when some electric guitar sneaks its way into the electro pop mix and carries you out. Look out for the latest from Azure Blue that’s due out next week on June 15th through Fika Recordings.
