Wednesday night ’round these parts has got you set out to make a tough decision as to how to spend your evening. Nathan already gave you a preview of the Stephen Merritt show that’s bound to be great, but I figured I’d throw a wrench in things and tell you about another show that’s sure to be a jangly guitar-rock filled good time. Crocodiles, who are on the verge of releasing their new LP, Boys are hitting Holy Mountain to give us some of the treats off that upcoming record. Having already spent some time with those new tracks, I can tell you it’ll be a smash. They’ll be joined by lovely locals ¿Qué Pasa? and Unknown Relatives which should make for a night brimming with psychedelic and hazy rock and roll. For ten dollars, you really can’t miss this.

ATH Premiere: Abram Shook

10343677_518284498314178_856904406646664692_nIn case you didn’t know, Austin’s own Abram Shook has got a new album due out next week via Western Vinyl, and I’m excited to debut a track from that record, Landscape Dream with you today. This song, “Perfect,” is a dreamy escape for four minutes that uses quiet vocals and effortless instrumentation to take you away from the daily mundane and into a better, gentler world. Personally, I’m loving the soft feel that this track has going for it, with each instruments’ contribution melting into the next so that the song dwells in between the genres of blues and folk. Get to listening and get excited for that album.

Digging This New Mutual Benefit Track

jordanleeJordan Lee has been making indie pop/folk inspired music under the moniker of Mutual Benefit for some time now, so I always get a little excited when I come across a new track from this gent. This time around, we get a little bit of a change up from Lee, as the track below is the fruit of a documentary series about the process of recording music. “Not For Nothing,” is a delightfully crafted little acoustic tune that’s reminding me a little bit of Ben Kweller in its slow paced bluesy/americana style. There’s also a great deal of orchestral presence in this song as well, which will surely melt your heart. Take a listen.

Peppy and Playful Pop from BLØSH

11060344_1671227279765180_8275133001164534360_o BLØSH are a group that notes their hometown as both Oslo and Madrid, and with that kind of diversity you can bet that their music is an eclectic mix of pop. This track, “Keep Your Tongue” is the perfect beat for this sunny, almost summery Friday in Austin, or one that will brighten up your day wherever you’re listening from. Starting slow, the band gradually works its way into its groove, but what I’m really loving are the angular guitar hooks that undercut the whole song. There’s a lot going on musically here, so get to listening.

New Track From The Helio Sequence

helioThe Helio Sequence, who have been around for almost two decades now, have a new track to share with you from their new album that’s due out in just a few weeks on May 19th. That new, self titled record looks like it will be an extension of the duo’s intimate pop tunes, as “Upward Mobility” works around the looping guitar riffs and some really understated piano that constantly pounds in the background. This track has got me excited for the new record, so you should listen and get excited too.

Hazy Psych From Talk In Tongues

10995681_829187820485028_5720237858771199899_nCan you believe we made it through another week? I can’t, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to use this Friday as excuse to turn up the jams loud, and L.A.’s Talk In Tongues have the perfect blend of hazy psychedelic rock to ease us into the weekend. This song, from the forthcoming album Alone With a Friend (Fairfax Recordings, May 19th), really lays the distortion and reverb on thickly, bathing all the elements in a smoky cloud that’s just enough to still let you hear the squalling synths and ever-tangy guitars.

New To You: Rheya

rheyaOn occasion, when looking for new tunes to share with you all, I find a song that’s more than a few days old that’s simply too good to ignore. Such was the case when I stumbled across Swedish band Rheya and their soft, yet gorgeous dream pop. As soon as you press play on “Franchise,” you’ll understand; the sound that comes out of your speakers will remind you of an even dreamier and lusher Wild Nothing. Simply put, I’ve had this song on repeat all day and it’s time you did too: the balance of each music element melts into each other seamlessly and with such allure that it’s impossible not to sway/shimmy along with this tune.

More From Acid Dad

11011994_812822625458471_1459261746120271598_oAround a month ago, I introduced you to Acid Dad, a New York band that specializes in making psych punk jams. Today I have a new track to share with you called “Digger,” which is the perfect blend of playful and punk rock– the guitars are raw and gnaw through the song, but then there are moments when the band really doubles up this energy and gives you bursts of sonic explosions. The cymbals crash, the vocals intensify and quicken, and those guitars switch from gnawing to snarling. After this quick release of another excellent track from this group, I’d say watch out for Acid Dad… they’re coming for ya.
