Take a Break With Some New Music Videos

Ok, so you’re still under the delusion that you’re going to get anything done at work today, but how much longer is that going to last? It’s Halloween! Take a break from whatever it is you’re still working at and take a look at two new music videos from local(ish) acts that will brighten your day and give you something to jam to while you start to get spooky.

First up are locals Shivery Shakes with their hilarious and cross-dressing abundant video for “Hold On” off their killer album Three Waves & A Shake. Just when you thought that song couldn’t get any better, the band gives it a visual component you don’t want to miss.

Next up is where the (ish) comes from in local(ish): Little Cinema. While the band divides their time between Brooklyn and Austin, we can still claim them a little as our own. In this music video for “Birdwatchers of the World, Unite!” a track off their debut album, Adventure, things get a little birdy.

Angel Olsen Graces Your Day

angelllEarlier this year, Angel Olsen put out her great album, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, and you thought you’d have to survive off this for awhile as far as tunes from this lady go. But you’re in luck! She’s announced the deluxe version of said album and it includes this extra track, “May As Well,” which has this sleepy, almost lullaby vibe going for it. It’s a short little number, but in its two and a half minutes, Olsen manages to encapsulate an old-timey sound with her emotive voice, that’s nostalgic to say the least. I’m really enjoying this number, and so you should be to. Have a listen and pick up Burn Your Fire For No Witness Deluxe Edition on November 18th.

The Twilight Sad – Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave

The_Twilight_Sad_-_Nobody_Wants_to_Be_Here_and_Nobody_Wants_to_LeaveRating: ★★★★☆

The last we heard from Scottish indie rockers, The Twilight Sad, was No One Can Ever Know, back in 2012. While this was a little bit of a set back for the group that has brought you excellent albums like Forget the Night Ahead, they’ve got their chance once again to add to their growing discography as well as to your listening catalogues. Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave, besides being a ridiculously long title for a record, is oddly fitting, describing the feeling of uncomfortable ease that a lot of the tracks touch on in their swirling darkness.

If you’ve never listened to any of this group’s previous works, you ought to know that this band has this powerful darkness that presents itself in various forms. Be it in the accented vocal strength of James Graham, the thick layers of gritty guitars, or the oft-crashing percussion—this band does dark indie-rock very well. The opening three tracks serve as an excellent beginning for The Twilight Sad, each one embarking on a different twist on the pleasant discomfort aforementioned earlier. First track “There’s a Girl in the Corner,” has the band starting slowly, as if to introduce themselves again to you, but there’s still Graham’s vocals spinning you a tale of some figure in the background while electric guitar spirals like smoke around the whole thing, which eventually leads to Graham belting earnestly.

Then you hit superstar track “Last January,” and you become completely enraptured: the slow swirl of the first track has been replaced with a quick paced number, fronted by the simmering drums which beg you to tap along to them. They reach the chorus, and there are these waves of softer synthesizer that just fall gently over the track, melting everything together, producing an audible emission of that feeling of uneasy comfort that’s so addictive to listen to.

Later on you get the deeper set tracks from this band, each number becomes grounded in itself and takes you further down the rabbit hole. While the first tracks really pulled you in, the last tracks hold you under. “Pills I Swallow” is a four-minute exercise in reserved power, with its multi-level vocals and the tinkling of delicate electronic elements. Then “Leave the House,” is the quietest this band gets; this stripped track has Graham’s rich Scottish voice in total control of the ballad before it switches from quiet to loud.

Like earlier records from The Twilight Sad, this one has every inclination of a grower—while there are those immediate tracks that get you first go-round the record player, the band gives you numbers where the energy is embedded and surfaces with further inspection. For their fourth full-length album, this group proves they’ve got more to give you and it happens to be pretty damn good.

New Technicolor Hearts Track & Video

technicolorTechnicolor Hearts are an outfit from ’round these parts that we introduced you to about a year ago. Well, this group has a new track for you: “Pocahaunted,” combined with a creepy video featuring the band getting witchy with it. The song moves pretty slow at first, giving you this electronic eerie vibe to pick up on before the psychedelic guitars move into play. Honestly, I was a little on the fence with this song at first, but the end of it keeps drawing me back– the group adds some string work in the background that finishes on this ethereal and detailed note that I really enjoy. Take a listen for yourself below and watch the music video here.

Show Review: Ryan Adams @ ACL Live (10.23)

Ryan

Thursday night was Ryan Adams’ second night at the Moody Theater; the previous evening he taped an ACL TV program, but this time it was purely all about the jams. A testament to this was the two-hour, and-then-some long set that Adams’ and his band gave to the very enthusiastic crowd. Comedian Dave Hall opened the night with his funny act. Read on to find out more about the evening.

Garage Jam From Desert Stars

desert starsRejoice, it is Friday! While it may not be the weekend just quite yet, nothing is a better transition from the gritty work week to the bliss of freedom like some garage rock and roll. Desert Stars are a Brooklyn based band that puts out gritty shoegaze indie rock. This song “Hamster Wheel” below is one that will have you playing on repeat over and over again. It starts with this disjointed bit of extremely crunchy electric guitar and some faint drum machine beats and then the band just really launches into the track. The whole thing switches from flat to suddenly three dimensional and so present in the bands wall-of-sound style. I don’t know what you think about it, but I’m jamming through the day with this number.

Lose Yourself To This Steve Gunn Track

steveIf your week is like mine, with no end in sight, this is the perfect track for your Thursday. There’s an ethereal quality in the guitar riff that’s pretty dreamy, maybe even dreamy enough to take your mind off whatever is weighing you down. Oh you’re really digging this? Well, its only the beginning– Steve Gunn released his album, Way Out Weather on Paradise of Bachelors earlier this week and you can get your hands on it here. Have a listen to “Tommy’s Congo” below and get lost!

Mix It Up With Kinkajous

kinkaIf you would have told me that I would be even remotely interested in a band that abides by the crossing of the genres of electronic and jazz, I would have to tell you you’re fucking nuts man. However, when I heard “Limb” from Kinkajous, a London based band that does just that, I was forced to change my preconceived notions a little bit. Take a listen–while it may be a little different than your normal taste, somehow, it’s reminding me a little bit of Explosions In the Sky in the way that it evokes a wistful kind of feeling even though it lacks lyrics and just relies on instrumentation. Watch the trippy video for the song here and pick up Kinkajous’ just released debut EP, here.
