Gordi Releases One More Single

Over the last month or so I must have been asleep while Australian based musician Sophie Payten, known musically as Gordi, released several stunning singles to preview her upcoming album. Well I stay asleep no more and am very pleased to share with you all this mesmerizing new single called “Extraordinary Life”. It is a truly haunting, yet lovely piece of music which seemingly combines songwriter elements like Joni Mitchell with a dash of some darker qualities like The Knife. Somehow the breathy, hushed quality of the vocals combines to work perfectly with the piano, sparse drums and plucked guitar. Not something that would typically fall in my wheelhouse, but I am struggling to resist hitting play on this one over and over again.

Gordi will release Our Two Skins on Friday, June 26th via JagJaguwar.

Raucous New Single From St-Katharina

I wouldn’t be shocked if you’ve never heard of Belgium based outfit St-Katharina, as they hail from the other side of the world and are still fairly new to the music scene. Now I will be shocked if you listen to this new song “Je Suis Presque Bien” and don’t immediately love the band and want to know more about them. Sort of a post-punk/noise rock mash up, the song is fast, furious and doesn’t mess around with only a little over 2 minutes to get your attention. I for one will be staying tuned as we get more from this group. If you dig it, the band has a full EP from 2018 and another single over on their bandcamp page.

Catchy Tune From Eastern Souvenirs

We’re easing into the weekend here in the ATH offices and hoping to close down the computers and enjoy some outside time with tunes and food. Before we shut it down for the day, might I recommend taking this new jam called “On a Train” by Eastern Souvenirs with you on your outdoor adventures. Brains behind this operation, Brian Fisher, has expertly crafted a grooving and all together soothing pop number perfect for a coastal drive or chill hang with friends. I think you’ll find yourself getting into the beat and letting your worries wash away.

Eastern Souvenirs will release this song as part of a new LP entitled Only For a Time coming out later this summer via Big Bldg Rcrds.

Intimate Track From Joe Vann

It’s Friday in a scorching hot Austin, TX and it seems like a perfect day to introduce you fans to a new up and coming artist. Today my focus turns to solo artist Joe Vann who writes and records his own music out of his apartment in New York City. His first exposure to the music world is this single called “Shuffle Around” which is an intimate, stripped down tune. Obviously the focus of this song is Vann’s voice which is certainly worth the focus as he commands the song with his hushed, yet entrancing performance.

Joe Vann will be releasing a full length solo album sometime later this year.

More From Mansions

Just last week the Seattle based duo Mansions, comprised of Chris Browder and Robin Dove, dropped news of an upcoming album with the single “Black and White”. Prior to the release date of new album Big Bad on June 26th, the band has just released this new single “PPV” to build even more hype for the upcoming release. This one is a bit more of a brooding and slow burning track when compared to the sheer noise and power of last track “Black and White”. What this one may lack in the noisey department, it makes up for with some truly emotional, thought provoking, and enchanting soundscapes. Pre-orders of Big Bad are up now via Bad Timing Records.

Plants and Animals Return Again

Over the year we’ve talked quite a bit about Montreal based band Plants and Animals, but the group seemingly goes away for a few years after releasing new music. Last we heard from the guys, they released the underrated album Waltzed in From the Rumbling way back in 2016. Well they are returning again in 2020 with this new single called “Sacrifice” which has caused me stop everything I’m doing and listen to this jam over and over again. It moves at an absolutely frantic pace, leading up to some drastic break downs and powerful vocal performances. This is exactly what I needed today.

Plants and Animals will release this song as part of a new album coming sometime in 2020.

Fun Track From Nancy

If you’re looking for some fun new music on this bright and sunny Wednesday morning, might I suggest this new song called “Call Me on Your Telephone” from Brighton based artist Nancy. It features a garagey inspired take on pop music, and might invoke images of Franz Ferdinand with a more guitar driven focus. You can certainly find something to enjoy in the playful, and sometimes scuzzy, vibe.

Slick New Single From Torpid

Most of the world is likely not familiar with the Brisbane based musical group Torpid, so allow me to introduce them to you. About a year ago the four Australian friends decided to get together and make some music, which resulted in the indie hit “For Your Health”. Since then, the band have been quietly working out plans for new music and recently dropped this new bangin’ single called “Don’t”. It will quickly bring up feelings of Joy Division meets The Strokes, meets Viagra Boys. The vocals are heavy and deep, the sounds are sort of in this garage rock/post-punk arena, and the lyrics are just quirky enough to put a smirk on your face. A little different and unique which is definitely my jam.

Driving Number From Mansions

Mansions is a Seattle based duo comprised of multi instrumentalist Chris Browder and bass player Robin Dove who have been making music together since way back in 2007. Over the years the duo have released three full length albums along with several EPs, remixes and singles. Looking into 2020, the band has their 4th album in the works entitled Big Bad, which is set to drop on June 26th via Bad Timing Records. Prior to that release, the band has offered up this slick new single “Black and White” as a preview of the LP. It features some nice, Kid A reminiscent bass/synth sounds combined with expertly timed, sparse guitars. The entire thing builds for about two minutes and then really explodes into a driving wall of beautiful noise.

New Luna Share Prunus

We’re closing down yet another week of mostly stay at home times and the fantastic music continues to pour in from musicians with a ton of time on their hands. Today I am pleased to offer you an impressive new song called “Prunus” from Manchester based group New Luna. What I tend to look for in new music is stuff like this with, what I consider to be, a fresh and unique take on genres which can otherwise get cluttered. These guys will at times remind you of a late 90s indie rock band, but then add in elements of fellow UK bands like The Twilight Sad to create something they can really call their own.
