Fruit Bats Back Again

It’s possible Eric D. Johnson and his project known as Fruit Bats has garnished more praise on this website over the years than any other band. It’s totally warranted from a a group that can continuously put out fantastic songs like this new one “The Bottom of It”. This is a lovely track featuring more of the mellow, country/beach vibe the band has always executed better than most. If this song is any indication, this album will be pre-ordered by me right now.

Fruit Bats will release Gold Past Life on June 21st on Merge Records.

New Diane Coffee Video & Single

Diane Coffee has new album entitled Internet Arms coming on April 19th via Polyvinyl Records and I’m excited for you all to hear his brand of quirky pop music. Prior to the release of his new album, Coffee is premiering this new video for his single “Like a Child Does”. The track itself is some catchy as hell, almost danceable pop music complete with ironic lyrics and spot on vocal delivery. You’ll also find a bit of joy in the video as Coffee plays on his own lyrics, imposing himself in several classic board games. Carry on good sir.

Promising New Single From Youth Sector

Brighton, UK based band Youth Sector just sent over this new single “Run” and I though it needed to be shared with the ATH community. I immediately loved the way these guys create this mixture of 80s rock like Devo with some nice and bright elements of Brit pop. For me, the band is really creating something unique with the blend of these two styles and I expect we’ll be hearing more about them soon. We’ll of course share more tunes as we get them.

Jangly Rock From Quasar Wut-Wut

Stop me if you’ve heard this before… I found a new band I love. Yep crazy I know. This time my new favorite band is self-proclaimed #3 band in Chicago, Quasar Wut-Wut. Though the band’s name may be hard to say, I can assure you that the music is very easy to get into. For your consideration is the group’s latest single and video called “Jezebel’s Arm”. It’s a really fun bit of jangly rock music with some unique vocal deliveries and a totally upbeat tempo. It reminds me of late British invasion bands if they had better vocals like The Dodos.

Quasar Wut-Wut just released a new album called Digesting Mirror which is available to stream in full on Spotify.

Fun New Pop Punk From THICK

It’s quite possible by now you’ve heard of Brooklyn based pop-punk outfit THICK. They’ve been talked about on many major sites for their throwback early 2000s style version of pop rock music and have earned some praise along the way. Though I may have been reluctant in the past, I can’t deny I adore this new single “Green Eyes” and it’s fun, energetic vibe. It’s as if Saves the Day married someone from Dum Dum Girls and decided to have a huge party afterwards. Party time, excellent.

THICK recently announced a signing to Epitath with this song and two others available to stream on the band’s bandcamp page.

A.A. Bondy Finally Returns

Man A.A. Bondy is one of my all time favorite songwriters to come out during the rise of our website. He has always had a knack for simple, yet emotional and powerful songs capable of evoking real feelings. For eight long years we haven’t heard much from Bondy, until he dropped two new singles late on Friday afternoon. The first one, entitled “Killers 3”, is just an absolute beauty in songwriting. It’s Bondy at his best with a slow burning, atmospheric track featuring some sick organ playing. He’s also released a new song called “Images of Love” with a bit more of a dancy vibe to it which is certainly a cool change from the songwriter.

A.A. Bondy will release new album Enderness on May 10th via Fat Possum Records.

Banger From Nightwatchers

I’m keeping things crazy today with a slow instrumental track posted earlier, but now I”m changing things up with some sweet rock n roll. This punk/post-punk song called “Fellah’s Temptation” comes by way of French based rockers Nightwatchers. I love the driving guitar sound with the heavy bass and the almost bark like vocals. I’ll be adding this to my weekend playlist and jamming it non stop.

Nightwatchers will release new album La Paix Ou Le Sable on April 12th via Lovely Records.

Atmospheric Track From Heron

Pennsylvania based instrumental outfit Heron made a name for themselves back in 2017 with their impressive debut LP You Are Here Now. Not to go quietly into the night, the boys now have a new single called “Splashdown” to continue the hype train moving on their music. Those who know me, probably realize this track is perfect for me because it blends equal parts Appleseed Cast and Explosions in the Sky. Both two of my all time favorites.

SXSW 2019 – A Recap

Yet another SXSW is in the books and it’s time for the ATH crew to reminisce a little and offer some highlight from the week behind us. I think we’ve had enough time now to take a few deep breaths, collect our thoughts, and delve through tons of notes and photos. As we’ve done in the past, we’ll offer up awards to bands, venues and events worthy of such praise. It will be glorious. Hit the jump for a full recap with photos.
