Shy Boys Are Back!

Kansas City based Shy Boys have long been a favorite among most, if not all of the staff here at ATH. The guys have been quiet for a couple of years now, and with the way things go with bands nowadays, it’s nice to hear that they are coming back with new music. As a taste of new material, the band has offered up this playful and quirky new track called “Take the Doggie With Me”. As you might have guessed, it’s about a dog the band members knew who they felt wasn’t getting much love and they want to take the pup with them. We’re all dog lovers here, so of course we love the track, but let’s not ignore the very well executed music. As always, the band is incredibly tight with perfectly timed guitars and an on point chorus. Well done.

Shy Boys will release new album Bell House on August 3rd via Polyvinyl Records.

Hey and the band will also be playing at Hotel Vegas on Thursday night with our friends The Sour Notes!

Introducing Lauren Lakis

I’ve been streaming this new single from Baltimore based artist Lauren Lakis all morning and I’m finally ready to stop being selfish and share it with you guys. The track in question, “Lead Us On”, is both fuzzy and gritty, while still bringing some brightness with its raw and lo-fi take on shoegaze/pop. One can certainly feel swept away in the emotional and very personal feel of the track. Welcome to the music world Lauren.

Lauren Lakis will release her first solo LP entitled FEROCIOUS on June 22nd via Cavity Search Records.

Ease Into The Weekend With Dusk

If you’re looking for a relaxing, easy to listen to tune for the weekend, I suggest you check out this new track “Old Magnolia” from Wisconsin based Dusk. The song clearly has some great country themes to it with a sort of meandering guitar, nicely harmonized vocals, and even a fiddle. I’m also enjoying this not too subtle video complete with monster trucks, gambling, and train tracks. This should be a great way to relax yourself into the weekend.

Dusk will release a self-titled LP on June 15th via Don Giovanni Records.

No One Sounds Like Sudakistan

As a local taste maker (that’s right I said it) I’m always looking for something new and unique to share with our fans and readers. Today I’ve been impressed with the incredibly unique sounds coming from Swedish by way of South America act Sudakistan. The band creates what they call their very own style of latino punk rock with a very Nordic, almost atmospheric take. Though it may sound a bit odd, I suggest listening to this new track “Two Steps Back” and bask in all its glory. This is surely the first latino-punk Swedish band right?

Sudakistan will release new album Swedish Cobra on September 7th via PNKSLM Recordings.

Heavy New Single/Video From Mute Swan

The shoegaze and post-punk genre is pretty saturated in our music scene right now, so it’s nice when you find a band who do it right or add something new. Tucson based Mute Swan do exactly that with this new track and video called “Enough Fun”. It’s super washed out with an insane amount of heaviness and crazy guitar reverb. It’s like Colourmusic meets Clap Your Hands. Ya dig.

Mute Swan currently have this single available for purchase on a Lathe Cut 7″ single.

Get To Rockin’ With Crimen

Nathan and I are ready to kick off our summer time fun in the next day or so and we need some solid rock jams to power us through the season. Thankfully I’ve just been sent this solid new rocker called “Six Weeks” from Rome based band Crimen. It certainly has a psych rock vibe to it with powerful drums, fuzzy as hell guitars, and a superbly distorted bass riff. Give me more of this please.

Crimen will release Silent Animals on June 29th via Fuzz Club.

Get On the Tancred Hype Train

It seems that the hype train for Maine based artist Tancred is leaving the station so I better get on board before it’s too late. For me, it’s easy to like an artist who combines pieces of straight forward grunge rock with gritty, yet still refined vocals. Imagine if bands like Joy Formidable and Garbage blended only their best qualities equally to create a female fronted rock opus. That’s what you’ll find with this new single called “Something Else”. Seriously, what’s not to like about this?

Tancred will release new album Nightstand on June 1st via Polyvinyl.

Slick New Track From The Gloomies

It’s been a second since we’ve heard anything from San Diego based band The Gloomies, but I am pleased to report that the band is still alive and kicking. Proof of their continued existence as a duo comes from this slick new track called “Palms”. It reminds me quite a bit of the earlier work of a band like Yeasayer if the vocals were a bit more reserved and completely in tune with the music. You’ll find a certain groove to the sound that’s sure to have your body moving along in unison.

The Gloomies will release Romance on July 13th via Thrill Me Records.

Fun New Track From Jonathan Something

It’s almost summer around these parts for teachers, and as I struggle to make it to the finish line, I need some inspiring songs to help motivate me. This new song called “Outlandish Poetica” from Jonathan Something is sure to perk me up and help me survive the next coming weeks. The track has a very playful vibe to it, similar to something you might hear from the early days of Wilco, but with more of an explosive sound to it. Call it what you will, it’s sure to brighten your day.

An album sharing this song’s title will be released sometime in August or September via Solitaire Recordings.

An Horse Return!

It has been a crazy long time since I’ve mentioned the name of old school Australian act An Horse. Seriously, the band have been absolutely dead and on hiatus since the release of their overlooked 2011 album Walls. During their mutli-year time apart both Kate Cooper and Damon Cox spent some time making music through other avenues, but they couldn’t stay away from each other forever. Having come together once again, the duo just released this stellar new track “Get Out Somehow”. Hopefully they plan on staying together for a bit so all of us fans can score some sweet new tunes like this one.
