Check Out Wild Blessing

This tune below has been about for a week, but I’ll be honest here, admitting it took me a week or so to kind of sink into the creaminess of Wild Blessing. As you’ll notice, nods to acts like Sea and Cake aren’t too far off, with a little jazzy sway working in and out of the tune, giving it this subtle bit of hipness that carefully trickles through the speakers. If it were instrumental, it probably wouldn’t work, but they offer up a little whispering vocal (with some backing notes) that slides right alongside the gentleness of the tune itself. A meandering bit of guitar pops up mid-tune to offer a bit more texture too, perfecting the sound. They’ll release From Dust on June 5th.

Vov Vov Drop Sunbathing in a Magnetic Field

If you find yourself a fan of acts like Broadcast or Dry Cleaning (maybe even Horsegirl), you’re going to want to listen to Vov Vov, who come from Italy to drop Sunbathing in a Magnetic Field. I wanted to give you a sample so that you could turn your eyes and ears overseas, with the group offering one of the most delectable treats I’ve heard this week. Their strategy seems to employ a seductive pace with very careful little guitar lines that entice you to turn the volume knob to the right. Little electronic buzzing pops up from beneath the surface, cresting with the vocals on the top of the mix, and you find yourself in love. Their new EP is available for your enjoyment today!

Snake Lips Announce Cat Beach

Felt like the opening jittery jangles of this new Snake Lips tune was the perfect way to kick off your Friday morning. They race right in, angular guitars whipping us into a frenzy whilst a smattering of drums shake up the scene behind the vocals. In terms of those vocal blasts, they get a little bit of call-and-response emphasis throughout the tune, creating a little bit of a pop sensibility from within the confines of an energetic little ripper. That pop moment only get further pumped up when they drop little “bops” as the track bangs to a close. Their new record Cat Beach will be out on July 25th via Repeating Cloud.

Artificial Go Release Hallelujah Single

Not sure what is up with the water in Cinncinati, but the music scene there is ridiculously rich at the moment, and you can add Artificial Go to one of the hottest acts coming out of the city. Personally, I’m crossing my fingers for a Serfs/Artificial Go joint tour, but I digress. On their latest single, they take their sound and employ a little bit of what we’d expect from an Australian/New Zealand outfit…like a ringing Flying Nun nod, albeit one drenched in American alternatives, particularly in the bass work. The steady stomp matched up against those angular jangles hits all the right notes, giving us this little DIY shimmy I’ve had stuck in my head since yesterday. Musical Chairs is out on May 16th via Feel It Records.

Kilynn Lunsford Releases Promiscuous Genes

When we reflect upon music as a commodity, we forget that our favorite acts were first and foremost artists, creators; they didn’t aim for algorithms or sponsorships, but rather lived, breathed and died for art. If you find yourself searching for such projects, might we suggest the latest from Kilynn Lunsford, who feels a bit like the demon spawn of Yoko Ono and Kim Gordon. On the latest single, your first greeting is this trudging stomp through some unknown hallway whilst echoes from spirits bounce across the horizon. As you push on, the song evolves into this anti-club banger, working on a heavy beat as Lunsford spouts free verse lines at the listener. Eventually, the song falls into madness, echoes abundant and everything seems like the world is falling apart beneath you. You won’t find a listen quite like this. Her new album, Promiscuous Genes, is out on May 16th via Feel It Records.

Labrador Share My Version of Desire Title Track

Today appears to be a day for title tracks coming out, so stay tuned for another just around the corner. But, at the moment, let’s enjoy this great new Labrador belter. It’s a sway-with-a-partner bit of balladry, with Pat King’s vocals dominating the mix while a light strum on the old gee-tar builds the backdrop. While the opening feels a little light, they slowly build in some rhythmic elements, first with a shaker then adding in thumps of drums to build up that texture. It creates this swell of big feelings, and it’ll have you reaching for a friend to just hold on tight as you watch the world burn. My Version of Desire is officially out on May 30th via Safe Suburban Home.

Tilde Releases Light of My Life

We deserve more music that feels like magic, which is where Swedish songwriter Tilde comes into play. She’s been releasing teases of a new record, with her latest operating as this striking chanteuse that calls you to her work. When you first press play, the song is stripped down, Tilde working atop a light strum with a little ambient buzz quivering in the distance; you’ll love her smoky tones as they glitter and sparkle from inside your speakers. If you’re patient, or completely enraptured, you’ll hear a slight bounce to the song, adding in some percussive elements deep beneath the tune, lifting the track by adding in layer after layer of texture. I just kept finding myself lost in this track, so it all seemed too perfect not to share with you.

Circling Back on Swearing At Motorists

It’s been nearly ten year since we heard anything from Ohio duo Swearing at Motorists, and perhaps that’s due to moves and changes in the lives of the core members. Fortunately, they’ve signed up with BB Island to reissue the great While Laughing, the Joker Tells the Truth, dropping real soon. And, in case you missed the record on the first go round, they’re reminding the masses with this great track that will have you wondering why you didn’t grab the LP on its first go round. Personally, the little uptick in energy around the 33 second mark is the perfect way to move the song into a great bit of solid indie rock; the vocal performance that carries on from there, too, seems like it’s telling a story of a great record that didn’t get nearly enough attention. Be sure you grab a copy on its May 16th release date!

Savak Share Child’s Pose Video

It feels like Savak should be a huge name in the indie scene, featuring members of the Obits and Holy Fuck, and with a smashing rock record in their pockets, you’d think they’d be all the rage. Alas, they’re brandishing a bit of an older indie sound, using a distorted rhythm guitar to set up this wonderful chorus that seems to rain down pop sensibility on the listener; I love how it feels like its sort of a last gasp at getting the track’s message across, showering me in its melody. This is the sort of rock n’ roll that as of late seems passe, which is unfortunate because they just don’t make crunchy rock n’ roll gems like this anymore. Their new record Squawk! is out via Ernest Jenning Record Co/Peculiar Works Music on May 30th.

Allo Darlin’ Announce Bright Nights

You knew it was coming, or at least you had your fingers crossed that it would come to fruition…and today is the day Allo Darlin’ announce their first LP in a decade. While they’ve often brought upbeat jangles, their new song embraces a gentler tone, something that feels like its near an indie folk sound, to a degree. Elizabeth Morris, as we would expect, is the shining star throughout, with her remarkable voice carrying a strong melody from the start to finish; she does get the occasional backing vocal to bulk it up, but her voice in the front of the mix is a huge draw. Bright Nights will be out on July 11th via Slumberland and Fika Recordings.
