Pynch Take You to the Supermarket

We’re almost to the weekend, and we’ve got to get over the hump with something infectious and fun, like the brand new single from Pynch. While it’s easy to hear the group as another lot jumping into the fray of traditional rock, they incorporate this natural sense of playfulness that gets the tune to the outskirts of the genre. Not sure which I adore more: the huge melodic hook that operates as the song’s core or the rhythmic bounce that keeps the liveliness in there. But, I do know I can’t stop pressing play, as this rips through and gives me a joyousness that I hope will kick start your day with a big grin.

Snoozer Drop New AA Single

When I first clicked play on this new AA Single from Snoozer, I instantly heard this allegiance to the college rock of old in their Arthur cover; it’s the sort that made folks like Malkmus famous. I was hooked, I was bobbing the head, tapping my toes, happy in my listening session. Then the unexpected hit and the song erupted into something altogether refreshing, at least in this presentation. Dreamier notes twists and crashed down, and while that’s not altogether new, I haven’t heard a ton of folks pairing it with a slacker rock disposition. Noisiness and nerds all in one? I’m totally in. And then, they completely change directions on the other side of the single, so you’ll have to listen through to hear the changes.

Darci Phenix Shares Truth and Clear Water Video

There are two ways to indulge in the below video, but rest assured, this new track from Darci Phenix is not to be overlooked. You can take a breath, relish in the craft of Darci’s sister, Sarah…or fast forward past the 1st minute to where the tune begins. Musically, the song carries you on this folk voyage, moving from these intricately picked strings and softened vocal notes. But, the tune begins to build, unfolding and stacking sounds to where the song begins to swell before your ears. Over and over, the song rises, only to recede and calmly close with a gentle nature; this tune appears on here new album, Sable, out on March 6th via Get Loud Recordings.

Double Wish Drop Seatbelt Single

I love how we’ve seen so many acts revisiting tricks of the trip-hop trade, or even just incorporating house music into their brand of pop…it’s made for some interesting vibes, like this new Double Wish single. This new track from their Deeper Ecstasy EP has this sway to it, something akin to the haze atop the ocean waters in their home state of California. That’s where the you get the sunshine of the tune, but beneath it, there’s some heavily tripped out beats, slowing the track into this almost ethereal vapor that weaves its way into your brain. If these vibes are what you’re looking for, then be sure to check out the rest of this EP when it drops on Friday.

Pachyman Announces Another Place

It always amazes me that for all the risks and adjacent vibes that course through Pachyman‘s sound that he doesn’t get loads of love from the indie rock cognoscenti. With the announcement of a new record, pushing his sound further into textural dub, he’s got this bumping new single, burrowing into your soul with its repetitive nature. And yet, you never tire, as the song’s builds and spins, ultimately feeling like a collection of break-beats from your favorite old school hip-hop DJ. And that’s the thing with his work, as it stretches here and there, and yet always feels like something magical and close to his core. Looking forward to Another Place; it drops on May 23 via ATO Records.

An ATH vs SOTO Party Playlist

As we hope you know, we’ve been throwing an annual Austin SXSW party, highlighting bands with new work out that we’ve adored; we always throw this show with our friends at 101X Homegrown/Side One Track One. Well, since the show is less about us, and more about the music, we’ve created an easy playlist to sample some of the new work by all the artists that are giving up their free time to be part of this yearly celebration.

The show itself happens on March 9th over at Hotel Vegas/Volstead. It’s absolutely FREE. No RSVP necessary. 21+ is the rule. Sample the music below. And, if you’re into FB, we have an event page here, just to help you remind yourself of the good times coming your way; it’s HERE.

Soot Sprite Share All My Friends Are Depressed

Overseas, there’s lots of buzz about Soot Sprite, and while they might have their own issues, their new single seems fitting for the majority of Americans that are currently burdened by stress and fear. The song doesn’t offer up the perfect solution, other than to “change what you can” as you move through life. I guess at a certain point you can let go of what you can’t change and work on the small things around you, like cranking up this tune at just the right time to let it rattle your speakers. They seduce you with a subtle bit of pop rock, subdued in its presentation before erupting with this great force that gives you the courage to step out into the world and kick some ass. Their debut LP, Wield Your Hope Like a Weapon will be out on May 16th via Specialist Subject Records.

Best Wishes – A Shortcut To I Was a King

It seems like as long as we’ve been running this site we’ve been covering the work of I Was a King, and for those that weren’t there along the way, they’ve announced a compilation that’s the perfect introductory collection for those that haven’t quite whet their power-pop whistle with these greats. The band have worked with legends like Robyn Hitchcock, Sufjan Stevens and Norman Blake…to name a few. For me, the fascination has always been the gentle roll of Frode’s voice; there’s this intimacy that’s met by a certain almost pastoral nature, almost as if its a sort of wisened sage whispering to you. Honestly, if you ever wished to be transported to a place of happiness, “Lighthouse” is a great place to being; you can find it on the group’s Slow Century LP too. Once you’ve dipped your toes into the storied history of this great act, be sure to order a copy of Best Wishes – A Shortcut to I Was a King…dropping on March 7th.

Jeffrey Lewis Is Just Fun

As I listen through the latest single from Jeffrey Lewis, I admire his craft more and more, relishing in the quick wordplay that he works into his latest little pop opus. He covers adulthood here, and whether he’s discussing the hardships, the ultimate settling here is a reminder that the bare essentials of life’s joys can be whittled down to just finding the fun. The songwriting is simplistic, in a sense (obviously I couldn’t pull it off), so you get to look into the great lines he’s put together, or revel in the stop animation utilized to pull this video together. The Even More Freewheeling Jeffrey Lewis will be out on March 21st via Don Giovanni and Blang Records.

Dumb Things Announce Self Help LP + Share New Single

If you come to our site from time to time, we hope you uncover something that’s possibly overlooked but worthy of repeat listens. Dumb Things is one such band, and their “Self Help” single was one of my absolute favorite tracks last year. The Aussie outfit have just announced they’ll be releasing their Self Help LP this April, and with that, they’ve sprinkled this delighting ditty to satiate your pop needs. Steady drums march you into the tune, then the sweetness of the vocals from Madeleine hit you right in the face; it’s enough that her voice sparkles in the verse, but when that chorus drops, aided by the rest of the group, I was just crushed. Really excited for the group, and for you to get to hear these songs! Self Help is out April 4th.
