Pullman Share Kabul Video

If you need to get the cobwebs out of your head, then turning on this new track from Pullman might just be the right thing to do. The song allows you to float into the week with really carefully looped instrumentation, building slowly so that the song begins to blossom into something deeper. Light percussion rolls into the scene, with deepened string orchestration brushing against it, all the while there’s that consistent loop of acoustics holding the song tightly to its core. The group will be releasing their newest effort, III, on January 9th, courtesy of the good folks at Western Vinyl.

Matt Kivel Show Reminder + Stream Escape from LA

Now that my children are a little bit older, trying to get back into the local game and hosting shows more often…and the ATH team is glad to back Matt Kivel‘s Release Show tonight at Community Garden. The show celebrates his new LP, Escape from LA, which is being put out by the good folks at Scissor Tail Records. Lord Jane Release the Lifting of the Fog

Ready for Friday? If you’re not, then surely this track from Belfast’s Lord Jane will help get your started right on your day. You’ll find the track below kicking off their new Lifting of the Fog EP, and while they definitely work with some of those angular riffs that have been popularized in the post-punk genre, the group teeter on the edge with some pop-punk tendencies too, especially in the vocal performance. It’s a really big sound, but it also is an illustration that the group has a sound that remains difficult to define. You can find the whole of the new EP right HERE.

Kirk Windsor Offers Ghost City

When I first pressed play on this new Kirk Windsor jam, it felt light; the guitars had a classic rock twang to them, but for a moment, it was too mellow in the songwriting sense. But, then the everything swings in the other direction when the full band sound enters the fray and the sound embraces this sort of modern glam pop. It’s interesting that the song’s title refers to “Ghost City” as there’s a definite ghost of Ziggy era Bowie, which is ultimately what grabbed me as I love the mixture of whimsy and rock n’ roll cool. You’ll find the song on the his new effort, Ups and Downs Town.

Another New Single from Kisses

The Melbourne music scene has always been one of our favorite global pop scenes, and relative newcomers Kisses have been making some noise. They’ve got a brand new track for you to dive into, which is another slow burner, working over some light guitar lines that seem to stretch into eternity. What the group does with their overlapping vocal layers is what really gets me when listening through, as they add this textural depth that deepens the emotional connection to what the group are doing. Seems a simple enough song, but there’s some great depth if you just let it wash over you a bit. Comes at you courtesy of Bedroom Suck Records.

 

Shopfires Share We Could Fall Apart

Felt like this week is all about finding the sparkle in those colder climes, and this brand new Shopfires track is the perfect little warm treat. The group’s newest single reminds me a lot of the latest Mary Onettes record, coiling itself around a dream pop stature while still allowing the shimmer of the guitars to tether the sound to a pop feel. There’s this little guitar interlude around the 2:18 mark that just crushed my soul in the best possible way, perfectly connecting to the softened melody of the vocals that runs through the song’s first half. Ancient Channels Drop Chimera

After greeting you with some crisp jangling guitars, let’s turn the other direction and drop you into the cavernous gothic world of Ancient Channels. The Aussie outfit champion a dark wave brand of post-punk, fueled by a deep rhythmic groove and a passive vocal approach that gives off this sort of mystical quality to the song. I love the work of the cymbals, giving just the snappiness hint of pop in the swirling madness they’ve created. They’re working on a new record titled Static Spirit, so don’t hesitate to get into their sound now while we await further news of the record!

Julian Never Announce Everyday is Purgation

It took one strum of the opening guitar line for me to get out my wallet and head over to the Mt. St. Mtn. web site to grab the new Julian Never; it’s the perfect ringing chime, and one that you’d expect me to adore. Then, as there’s some progression and the track adds layers, such as the softened croon of the vocals, I continue to fall further into the song. It’s interesting, as there are some wafting fog pop similarities, though this group’s approach is to lift the pop underbelly in the tune, instantly elevating it into a classic indiepop sound. Everyday is Purgation is shaping up to be a beauty; it drops on February 6th.

Draag Back With a New One

Drag is another band who left a lasting impression on me during SXSW last March having seen them put on their show more than once during the week. After a promise of new music in the coming months, the band has delivered with this impressive new tune called “Miracle Drug.” I love the play here on twee meets screamo and I think the band are truly diving into new territory that other bands only attempt to hit. It’s pretty rad.

This track is part of a new EP entitled Miracle Drug which is due out on January 23rd.

Dennis Callaci and L. Eugene Methe Announce Joint LP

Music, more than ever, is a commodity; you’ve got to churn out hits and content to keep the algorithm happy, unless, you’re like Dennis Callaci and L. Eugene Methe. These two songwriters approach songwriting in a different fashion, pushing aside trends and genre studies to push for a purity. Today, we bring you news that the two have collaborated on a joint venture titled The Last Chance Lottery, where Methe handles the music and Callaci handles the vocals and wordsmithing. L. Eugene Methe’s craft can immediately set you on edge, beckoning from shadowy corners of harrowing atmospherics; this is furthered by Dennis’ performance, almost scratching at the speakers with the way his voice haunts the listener from the confines of what feels like a very cramped little space. It’s a captivating introduction to the LP, which arrives via Gertrude/Shrimper Records on January 23rd.
