Psychedelic Jam from New Electric Ride

NEROne of the little labels that I’ve taken a liking to over the last year or so is Beyond is Beyond is Beyond.  They first caught my attention with Prince Rupert’s Drops, but I’m really excited by their signing of UK band, New Electric Ride. While there are definite touches of psychedelia in this tune, with perhaps even a nod to the Doors, I’m particularly liking the actual verses.  There’s something about the softness of the vocal that I find really enjoyable, especially when it’s backed up to the deeper vocals of the chorus.  The band will be releasing their debut with the label this Winter.

You Guys Should Check Out Proto Idiot!

protoI first caught wind of Proto Idiot through the 7 inch Andrew released with Trouble in Mind Records; seems like that release fueled him, with more songs being put up as each month goes by.  For those of you who grew up with punk rock in your veins, I think you’ll really dig the work from this guy.  The songs are pretty simplistic in structure, yet the vocals have  that affected British drawl to it, which makes sense for a guy from the UK.  The tune below comes from Saturday Nights, but do yourself a favor by going back through the whole Proto Idiot catalogue.  I promise you won’t be disappointed.

This Slipped By: Johan Hedberg

johanI’m not sure how I skipped over this, but this beautiful track from Johan Hedberg has been floating around for about a month.  Even more confusing are the lyrics, which I don’t really understand as they’re mostly in a foreign tongue.  But, what I do know is that the emotional pull of this track supersedes all that.  While the song starts off rather slow and simple, it builds, as all great pop tracks do.  The musical release as the song erupts is so moving, that I couldn’t not post the track; I don’t want you to be without it my friends. It’s available now through Labrador.

Permanent Collection Ready New EP

LL013__permanent_collection_no_void_coverOur friends over at Loglady Records are going to finish out 2013 strong, with a few more excellent releases up their sleeve for September.  One of those releases is coming on September 10th; it’s the new Permanent Collection EP, titled No Void. The track below is one of my favorites, opening up with a barrage of noise before settling into the meat and potatoes of the track.  The guitar has a faint jingle-jangle to it, while the vocals carefully drape themselves atop the track.  It’s going to be a fun listen, so get yourselves ready to pick it up in a few weeks.

Show Preview: Ty Segall @ Mohawk (8/27)

Ty Segall

Date Tuesday, August 27th
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30
Tickets $12 from Transmission

Well, it seems like he was just here, but now that Ty Segall has released the most excellent Sleeper, he wants to play all those tracks for you.  It might make for a completely different show, as there’s a softer side to the record, which I raved about last week. You should probably buy tickets as soon as you see this; his shows usually sell out.  He’ll be accompanied by Holy Wave and Hidden Ritual…two local acts that always deserve your attention and support.  For those use to Ty’s walls of noise, let’s all go see how he offers the more subdued to the crowd; I’m sure he’ll win us all over regardless.

Dreamy Pop from The Halamays

halamaysYou would think that February Records couldn’t release much more beautiful pop music this year, could they? Wrong! They’ve just put out the Overkill EP by Ohio duo, The Halamays.  On this tune, it opens with a subtle electronic line, which eventually unfolds into the beautiful male/female vocal pairing that makes the group so endearing.  The song continues to plod along in this manner, always enchanting your ears.  I don’t think there’s a better way to start off your work week, and mine, than with this wonderful track.

The Cloak Ox Release New Single

shootthedogI think if you mention the name of Tunde Adebimpe of TVOTR then people are going to immediately get excited.  But, I think that’s probably not entirely fair to the Cloak Ox; their latest single is beautiful on its own, right down to the last detail. The percussive element has tribal roots, although I think the vocals and the rest of the song definitely have hints of Dirty Projectors construction within the walls.  It’s all made up for an interesting sound that should help you take your mind into the weekend.  The band’s debut album, Shoot the Dog, will be out on September 17th via Totally Gross National Product.

More New Music from TV Ghost

TVGHOST2_Greg_The_MayorOver the last few weeks I’ve found myself immersed in the dark album soon to be released by TV Ghost.  They’ve titled the record Disconnect, and In the Red Records will release the album on September 3rd.  I think a lot of people are going to be really impressed, especially if they have the patience to let these tracks unfold.  On the latest single, there’s a stabbing guitar pulse that ends up providing a rhythm for the track, while the cymbals carefully shake in the background.  I think, for me, the most interesting thing about listening to this track is that the band is able to maintain your attention with each track, even though several tunes span over the five-minute mark. Here’s a new one to enjoy.

Austin Spotlight: New Music from Daniel Francis Doyle

dfd-t-shirtDaniel Francis Doyle is an Austin musician that deals with the more playful side of pop music.  There’s always been interesting time signatures or non-traditional instruments used in his craft, yet that’s always been carefully wrapped around warm melodies.  Lucky for us all, Daniel has just put up a batch of new tunes; it’s the first I’ve heard from him since 2011.  According to my sources, the music was recorded at The Owl, one of Austin’s best kept secrets, so you never know who popped up to help record.  I like this particular tune for it’s light-hearted guitar stutter, not to mention I’m a fan of his vocal delivery.  There’s 9 new songs, and Daniel’s gracious enough to share them with you all. I’ll keep you posted when we near a release date for these tracks.

New Music from The Dismemberment Plan

homepage_large_34eb3122Emergency and I was one of my favorite records back in the day, and when it was re-released on vinyl this year, I quickly grabbed it up.  But, that album’s old, and for the most part, I had accepted that The Dismemberment Plan was dead and buried, even though Travis Morrison was still out there writing music. So, now that the band is back, why not share their new music?  The single below is from the band’s upcoming record, Uncanny Valley, which comes out on October 15th via Partisan.  I like that this song isn’t quite as spastic as I remember the band being; I like how it slowly unfolds, with Morrison’s calm vocals walking us through the track.  Happy to see these guys making new music, hope you are too.
