Beautiful Track from Ola Podrida

olapodrida_interviewYou know we’ve long supported Dave Wingo and his Ola Podrida project, but he’s been fairly quiet as of late, at least on the OP front…choosing to work on scoring films whilst working in a new band.  Finally, he’s completed his third LP, joined by a full line-up, which adds a different complexity to his quieted folk numbers.  There’s still the same emotional pull from his vocals, but the accompaniment by his new partners creates a depth that some might have seen as lacking (not me!).  His record is titled Ghosts Go Blind, and it’s being released by the folks over at Western Vinyl .

Noisy Number from Big Deal

jpegIt seems like Big Deal have decided to up the ante on their blend of electronic bedroom pop, choosing this time to add a full line-up that would help flesh out their sound.  Almost from the moment their new single starts, you can feel the buzzsaw guitars and the pounding rhythmic drumming in your ears, pausing ever so briefly to toss a softer moment in between.  It’s a heavy-handed track, but one that’s exciting in its very approach, offering a new look at the London group.  They’ll be releasing their newest album, June Gloom, on June 4th.  Be sure to hold out for the soaring bit of vocal at the end just before the group breaks into a nice little group chant.

Nerdy Pop from Breathe Out

tumblr_inline_mhr0qmRPoH1qz4rgpOur friends over at Art is Hard Records are back at it again, readying a new EP from Breathe Out.  There’s absolutely no way you can escape the delicious pop presentation from this tune, “Dead Friends.” It sort of reminds me of an odd blend between Pavement and early Weezer, but there’s also modern elements that make the group more than a re-hash outfit. The EP is titled Absolute True Love, and at the moment, that’s precisely how I feel about the band at the moment; I can’t ignore such infectious hooks–you can’t either! Enjoy the track.

Don’t Know What To Think About Crow44

Just listen to this. I know it should trigger fandome from many people that enjoy the likes of Ariel Pink and maybe Mac DeMarco or Tune-Yards whatever quirky genre straddling, tempo changing and melody challenging.

I recoiled on first listen, but there is something oddly charming? So I put it to you. Verdict?

The track is by Crow44. It is called “Love You To Death”. It is on a self-titled EP and you can read more about the project from Desmond Pierce here. Given the title, I figured it would be an appropriate track for pre-Valentine’s playlisting, even if only a love song in name only.

Introducing Slugbug

4126319756-1You’ve got to trust your record store clerks; it’s the heart-and-soul of music recommendations. One of the Austin purveyors turned me on to Paul Millar, who works under the moniker of Slugbug.  It’s really hard to put the music in any certain genre, as it’s fairly schizophrenic in a fascinating sort of way.  His main muse seems to be electronica, but he blends it with elements of oddball pop and post-punk.  He’s recently released his Layer of Abstraction EP, with more tunes set to come soon on his Truck Month LP (we’ll give more details as they come).  For now, revel in the curious ways of Slugbug; you’ll be glad to find such a unique artist alive and well in Austin. And you can check out a rad old-school type video of the track HERE.

Free New EP from Body Language

LH-008_BL_GrammarEP.152626In preparation for the release of their new album, Grammar, Body Language have decided to be really cool.  They’re not giving you some slow-loading youtube preview, rather they’re giving you their entire new Grammar EP for FREE!  All you’ve got to do is trade in your trusty email address.  According to the band, the new record continues the band’s experiments with blurring the lines between pop, disco and R&B.  The results are pretty interesting, and I’m particularly interested in the track below.  There’s a central hook, with some carefully placed electronic grooves; it borders just on the edge of “shaking it,” but possibly just more of a toe-tapping head bobber tune. Grab the EP HERE.

Rowdy Rocker from Bad Cop

_epcoverb600.152158I feel like we didn’t bring you enough rock n’ roll last week; so I’m doing my damndest to make up for all that this week.  I wanted to toss out this new (ish) tune from Bad Cop, who are re-releasing their I Can’t Slow Down EP to the masses.  The opening track, “Animal,” is just straight-up rock n’ roll; it’s not garage or punk, just blues-fueled stomping rock.  But, that doesn’t mean you’re not going to find yourself an endearing hook in the chorus, because the Nashville boys give you just that.  The spirit is alive with these boys, and thank goodness for that!

More Glamorous Pop from Warm Soda

Warm_soda_FRONTsmall_1024x1024.144844Barely a few weeks ago I brought you a rad little number from Warm Soda, and they’ve tossed out another one that deserves equal notice. “Waiting for Your Call” starts out with this chugging guitar progression, with a bit of background twang. It builds until the band twists your arm into a moment of pop goodness, aided by the soft vocal delivery.  The guitar knifes in and out of the track, each time being accompanied by precision drumming and that smooth vocal hook.  If you know what’s good for you, you’ll be going to pick up Someone For You on March 26th via Castle Face Records.

Show Review: The xx @ ACL Live (2/11)

When The XX announced their Austin show, tickets were virtually gone within minutes, forcing the band to add another show immediately.  Such is the demand and the hype associated with the British group after the release of their album, Coexist.  They brought friends Austra to town with them, giving listeners a glimpse at the operatic IDM realm.

Read on for some thoughts on the evening and pics.
