Fresh New Tune from New Tigers

I always liked the idea of a split 7″; to me, it shows a bit of camaraderie in the musical community.  When I first saw that New Tigers had a new track on a split with Sweden’s Top Sound, I got really excited, as I’m already a fan of New Tigers after their self-titled album from last year.  The split will be shared between Ca Ira and Soliti Music, and it comes out next week.  Both bands take a stab at covering the other group’s tunes, which is another thing I enjoy–you get to see how bands react to the music of their peers.  I’m definitely digging this track, but I knew I would.

Great New Tune from Cate Le Bon

I was fortunate enough to catch Cate Le Bon last year at ACL Live as an opening act, and ever since then I’ve clamored high and low for her music.  I dug CYRK, but now she’s readied the CYRK II EP, which comes out on August 21st.  Just listening to Cate, you can’t help but be completely swept away my her simple guitar work and incredible vocal prowess.  She seemed a bit timid live, but she’s definitely not playing that role any more.  You can tell that she’s ready to take on the world with this tune. Can’t wait to pick this one up.

Beautifully Drenched Pop from Meridians

It took me a minute, or a few seconds rather, to get what Meridians were going for, with the song slowly inching away in ambient noise before Julie’s voice enters into the picture.  Seconds later and surely you’re sinking into the details of the song.  Her voice begins quietly, and the guitar seeps into the track.  It’s not long before her partner Trevor joins her, ever so slightly, leaving a slight contrasting echo in the far off distance. This track is featured on the group’s self-titled album, which just got a tape release from the beautiful people over at Cakes and Tapes.  You can click HERE for a video of the track.

New Folk Tune from Miner

One of the great things about running this site is when bands reach out to us for help, and then we get hooked.  Just such a thing happened today when I got this email from Miner, a California group who will release their Hey Love EP in August.  While primarily the work of Justin Miner, the depth of this song featured here wouldn’t be what it is without the work of his group, adding vocal harmonies in all the right places.  If you’re looking for a group who played sun-drenched folk with a sense of longing, then you’re going to really enjoy this track; I know I’ve had it on repeat for the better part of today.

New Girl Pop from Stealing Sheep

Sometimes you have to be a bit skeptical when you get the hype from overseas, but I have a feeling that Stealing Sheep are going to live up to it all. The all girl trio from Britain just released this great single as a prelude to the release of their album, Into the Diamond Sun, which will come out this September on Heavenly Recordings.  The playfulness in the vocal delivery was enough of a hook, then the rest of the girls join in creating a catchy pop stomp that won’t get out of my head.  I have this slight feeling that a lot of people are going to adore these lovely ladies.

New Tunes from Three Mile Pilot

It would seem like Three Mile Pilot is the band the world forgot, but luckily the band is returning with their first effort since The Inevitable Past Is the Future Forgotten.  It’s great to see that while the group’s pushing forward with their Maps EP, they still sound remarkably like the band I always adored.  On this track, the vocals build atop each other, emphasizing the power in the song’s construction, then they pull back to effortlessly let the song unfold in a manner that obviously gave birth to bands like Pinback.  You can pick up your copy of the new five-song EP over at Temporary Residence, so get to it fool.

New Tunes from Deep Sea Arcade

You know we love the Aussie’s over here at ATH, so it figures that I’d stumble upon another act from Sydney that I’d dig.  Deep Sea Arcade has a different sound than the majority of the acts I fawn over from Oceania, featuring a cleaner guitar sound and hints at nostalgic Britpop…in my ears.  I love the wash of the vocals on this track, which comes from their album, Outlands; it’s just been released in the States by Microfiche Records. If you’re looking for some sprightly tunes in the way of classic guitar rock then enjoy this track!

Hooks Galore from Bravestation

It’s been pouring constantly for the better part of today, so I’ve been out and about doing some house work.  The soundtrack to my house painting and what not largely revolved around Toronto’s Bravestation.  Their sound is all over the place, but it’s like exploratory new wave, with tribal rhythms propelling the songs and bright swirling guitars present on every track.  The following track is featured on the group’s recent record, Giants & Dreamers, and the title really exemplifies the band’s sound throughout the effort.  I can see myself jamming for this for weeks to come, if only this rain would get out of my way!

Stripped Down Jam from Helvetia

I’m really digging the sound of this new track from Helvetia, who’ve just signed on with Joyful Noise Recordings.  It’s got a classic 90s indie rock sound, but that doesn’t mean that it’s outdated by any means.  There’s something about the vocal delivery; it’s almost as if there’s a bit of twang or drawl hanging on every note.  As the song changes direction in towards the end, you can see that the group’s not content to settle on any one sound in particular, pushing themselves to include some sonic extensions. You can grab this tune and others on September 11th when the group releases their new record, Nothing In Rambling.

Brand New Beauty from The Helio Sequence

There are some bands who you wonder how they’ve remained in obscurity for so long.  I know it’s been four years since The Helio Sequence last released Keep Your Eyes Ahead, but even still, that record is super solid. And now, with the band set to release Negotiations on September 11th via Sub Pop Records, you expect big things, even if no one else does.  Listening to this track, it has the marks of the current indie climate, capturing both beauty and melody simultaneously, while still maintaining the intimacy I’ve always appreciated about the group.  If there was one band more people need to love, it’s this one.  Listen in to see if you don’t agree.
