Dreamy Pop Number from Pure Bathing Culture

It’s been a pretty busy week all around, and I almost let this one slip though my hands, that is until I saw that Pure Bathing Culture is comprised of members of Vetiver, a band we think highly of here around the house.  They’ve compiled four new songs that they recorded with Richard Swift, and that EP should come out on May 22nd via Father/Daughter Records.  While there’s a definite element of haziness at work here, I really love the quality of the vocal, with just a hint of raspy/smoky quality.  It will be interesting to see what a full length effort sounds like, but for now, this EP is doing just fine!

Crafty New Track from Arc in Round

I’m really excited by the possibilities in music nowadays, especially with the layering of various instruments and the varying movements within tracks.  With that in mind, take a listen to this new jam from Arc In Round; you’ll find this song on their self-titled debut, which hits stores on June 5th via La Societe Expeditionnaire. There’s all sort of things occurring within the track, not to mention the actual main piece of music itself, and it all works, it’s all unified.  Perhaps I just like to see how much one can cram into one song and make it still sound structured and beautiful, and if that’s the case, well, so be it; this track works just fine in that sense.

Great Pop Jangling from Sea Pinks

Last year we talked about our adoration for Sea Pinks and their record Dead Seas, which you need to get if you haven’t.  But, I’m here to talk about a new track, sort of; this song, along with several others will comprise The Flip Side cassette being released by the Belfast group next week; it’s basically a collection of B-Sides and demos since the band’s incarnation. Every time I listen to this song, I can’t help but wonder why on Earth it didn’t make a proper album? I mean, it’s got the bounce, a nice cool vocal chorus, and everything else one needs to make a stellar hit! Just think, if these are the sort of tracks the group bangs out as B-Sides, you know something great is about to happen.

More Sweet Tunes from Dana Buoy

The Internet has already given some great coverage to Dana Buoy, who really is Dana from Akron Family.  His debut album Summer Bodies will be coming out in a few short weeks (May 8th) via Lefse, and we’re all pretty excited around here for the street date.  For me, I fell for this song because of the way it builds, using atmospherics, then his voice enters, then it continues to build with a bit of a background stomp until the end.  These sort of tracks are always entertaining, and for some reason, there’s a little bit of an emo affectation to his vocals that’s really working for me today. Just give a listen and see what you think.

Haunting Track from Horrible Present

You’ve always got to support the bands everyone misses, especially when they make such incredible tracks as this one from Horrible Present.  This track is from the excessively titled 54, I love you but its time to get off record the band has just released on Cakes and Tapes, and regardless of the extensive album title you’re going to fall in love with this track.  The darkly tinged vocals give a bit of that haunting feeling to the track, but the minimal production slowly evolving in the background quietly sinks into your music listening soul.  If you’re looking for bedroom pop that sticks, then fall for this song!

Introducing You to Velcro!

When we hung out with Twerps the other night, their bosses so to speak, Chapter Music, suggested we get to familiarize ourselves with Velcro, the next big thing to come out of Australia.  The Melbourne group has released two EPs already this year, with my favorite being the first, Highest View.  There’s elements of bedroom electronic pop that they experiment with (fleshed out on their later EP Inadequate Lover) on the track featured below, but I like the innocence the song takes on in its simplicity; it gives you that endearing emotional appeal that a lot of bands seem to short for nowadays.  The rest of their brief catalogue sounds a bit like a Calvin Johnson meeting Diamond Rings in a sunny place.  Familiarize yourself with the band by checking out their BANDCAMP page (free EPs!!!), and then keep an eye out for more great things from the group.

Cool New Track from Sherpa

Everyone loves Oceanic music right? Well, here’s another great outfit you should give some love to: Sherpa. They’re from New Zealand, and they’ve just put up their new album, Lesser Flamingo.  Everything about their sound is winning me over today, combining vocal harmonies with ramshackle indie pop.  One of the reasons I really appreciate this track is the fact that they take a simple approach, running straight ahead with the song–no pretext or extraneous flourishes.  In the end, you’re left feeling uplifted and excited to have come across a band writing such fantastic gems.  Pleased to meet you guys!

New Rocker from The Trillions

Virginia’s The Trillions might not be on your map just yet, but they’re definitely a band you’ll want to familiarize yourself with today.  With named influences such as the Strokes and Big Star it’s easy to lump the band’s sound in with the masses, but I think the vocals give them an extra touch that sets them outside the usual realms.  I hear a little bit of Dr. Dog in the vocals, giving a softer underbelly to their rock tunes. They’ve got a new record coming out called Tritones, and this track below is the lead single, so wrap your ears around this goodness.

New Jam from Mystery Jets!!!

RayRay and I have long adored Mystery Jets, regardless of their sonic changes throughout the years, so I never get tired of hearing from these dudes.  And, to top it off their new album Radlands, which comes out April 30th, was recorded while the band spent time here in Austin (it’s even reflected in the album art).  It seems the band has found a great groove with this new record, showing their progression as a group while still maintaining that fantastic pop sensibility that made me such a huge fan.  Just give one listen to the chorus alone, and you’ll be as excited as I am for this new release.
