A light show, four Candelabra bulbs do not make.

My uppance for complaining about the light a few shows back? Perhaps, but I persevered and was able to grab some pics for you from Literature’s set at the Scoot Inn. We’ll have their vinyl available soon, pre-order here people. So in the meantime, no better way to get geeked up than to hit a smaller venue on a busy night to see how the material is shaping up live. It was good, really good.

Things are picking up on Saturday night, and we’ve got a great local show for you to get in on! Literature, ready to release their Arab Spring record in April, will be taking the lead role on the night, and they’re a remarkable live act.  But, atop from being our favorites, you can also catch Neighbor and Rhett and Dean over at the always hospitable Scoot Inn. If you didn’t get into the Thurston Moore show, this seems like the next best place to find yourself on Saturday is by joining us at the Scoot.  Oh, and as if we have to remind you, you can pre-order the Literature record HERE.

Show Preview: Thurston Moore @ St. Davids Episcopal Church (2/11)

Make no mistake about it, Saturday has a lot of great shows, but one of the places to be has to be St. David’s Episcopal Church where you can catch one of the legends of indie rock.  Things seem to be on the down low for Sonic Youth, but Thurston has a great catalog all his own, so don’t show just hoping to catch up on the oldies. The last time I caught him doing his solo act, I couldn’t take my eyes off his guitar skills; be sure to get there early, as you’ll want to get as close as you can to this demigod.

Party Pics: Council Meeting @ ND (2/3)

There was another Council Meeting at The North Door and it just so happened that friends of ATH, The Great Nostalgic and Tiger Waves, were playing through the curtains. What a lovely way to spend an evening; playing jams and shooting jams being jammed. Lots of jamming, in fact. Jam has become our favorite thing.

Jeremy Jay was definitely on my radar over the last several years, putting out several solid albums in a quick spurt.  He’s done most of his work on K Records, and I’ve heard he’s in the process of new tunes.  His shows are always a blast, as he dances about the stage with either guitar or microphone, consistently connecting with the audience.  For such a cheap price, you can’t make any excuses for not catching JJ at Stubbs.  Get there early to check out Survive, the opening act on this occasion.

Show Preview: King Khan @ the Mohawk (2/4)

Rock n’ roll season is clearly upon us, and Mohawk is kicking things off the right way.  They’ve got one of the best live acts around coming to town Saturday night with King Khan and the Shrines taking to the stage.  We haven’t really heard a lot of new stuff coming from the camp, but their catalog is worthy of endless sets of straight out jams.  And if that wasn’t good enough, the most excellent Jacuzzi Boys will be starting your night out the right way, fresh off the release of their album, Glazin on Hardly Art.  Come on folks, get out and get rad.

Show Pics: A Lull @ The Mohawk (1/30)

Yeah, I went out in crap weather on a Monday night to see some bands. Fine, I feel you judging me.

It was an inside show at Mohawk that featured A Lull. They had Deleted Scenes and Tape Deck Mountain opening. It was fun to open up the big 50 and catch slices of the show.

ATH Council Meeting @ the North Door (This Friday!!!)

It’s that time again; time for your favorite local DJs to play the hits all night long!  We’ll be gathering with our friends over at the North Door on Friday night to dance, sing and have an all out good time.  Pretty sure you’ll enjoy at least half the songs we’ll play, and if not, then you can at least enjoy the excellent beverages and the tasty grub from Tamale Molly.  We’ll start kicking things off around 8, and I’m sure we’ll be throwing down until close, or later.  Oh, and if you’re a fan of the site and live in Austin, you need to be there to help us celebrate our writer RayRay’s 29th birthday. He only has one more year until he’s officially old, so let’s start him off the right way.

Show Preview: Matt Pryor @ Antones (2/1)

If you’re looking for a show to take you back in time, all the way back to the late 90s Emo scene, then perhaps this is where you’ll need to be.  I can’t vouch for some of the singers doing their solo gig, but I hear they were a big deal.  However, I can advise you, if you can afford to go check out Matt Pryor and Chris Conley.  Chris is part of Saves the Day, where a small part of me still has a bit of love.  Matt Pryor, however, has continued to step outside his work with TGUK and promote his solo work.  His latest, May Day, is just another step in the right direction for a man who clearly knows his way around an acoustic track that warms your soul.  I’ll be there for Matt for sure.
