Show Review: Jónsi @ Verizon Theatre (10/25)

Being that our website name carries the word Austin, it’s rare that we venture outside of Austin for shows.  I mean do we really need to with this town?  Not really, so we decided to send a friend of ours out to Grand Prairie to check out the show by Sigur Ros leading man Jónsi.  Our very talented friend Elizabeth Levacy will recount the night and even show us some fancy photos from her experience.  Follow the jump for our guest review by Liz.

Show Preview: Colour Revolt @ Mohawk (10/29)

Date 10/29/10
Location Mohawk
Doors 9pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

Despite some of the recent major changes around Colour Revolt with departures of key members and whatnot, I still enjoy the band and their tunes.  I’ll be supporting that sound by stopping in at Mohawk on Friday night for a set by the band.  If nothing else, you gotta know these guys can rock some faces in the live setting.  Your opening support will be provided by locals White White Lights.  Sounds like a good time to me!

Show Preview: We Are Scientists @ Emos (10/28)

Date Thursday, Oct 28th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $13 from Ticketweb

We like We Are Scientists, and we’re pretty sure that the band is going to put on one hell of a show for you all, but the real reason to get excited has to be the opening band Twin Tigers.  They blew us away at SXSW, and their album. Gray Waves, was about as perfect a debut as you can get.  Their feedback squalls, wrapped tightly around pop sensibility, is sure to give you something to remember.  It’s not often that we fawn over a band, but this is one I’ve been all about, so you can guarantee that I’ll be there in attendance.  Also, Rewards will open up the whole evening, so you have yet another good reason to get yourself to Emos.

Show Preview: The Fresh & Onlys @ Emos (10/27)

Date Wednesday, October 27th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 from Ticketweb

On the midweek marquis at Emos this week, you have to come out. There’s no way around it, The Fresh & Onlys are going to be playing.  They just released their new album, Play It Strange, which is surely going to be in our Top 20 of the year, and I can’t get songs like “Waterfalls” out of my head.  Recorded, there definitely is a bit of haze to their sound, but live, they’re an entirely different animal; it’s something you definitely need to see in order to understand.  Also in attendance will be Royal Baths and Rayon Beach, so two more reasons to get out to this show. The touring year is winding down, and this looks to be one of the best shows Austin has left, so don’t miss out!

Show Preview: Ra Ra Riot @ Emos (10/26)

Date Tuesday, October 26th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $15 from Ticketweb

Okay, so everyone will probably be running around town trying to get their hands on this Jonsi character, but I just can’t do it.  I think I’ll pass my time with a little bit of pop tunes, and a nice dose of orchestral touches.  You see, Ra Ra Riot are playing at Emos on the same night.  The band just released The Orchard, their sophomore effort, and while it may seem them trying new ground, it still has a lot of upside, not to mention the band’s great live  potential. Also on the bill are up-and-comers Givers and one of my favorite new groups, Villagers.  This sounds like a more low-key place to be Tuesday night, so get on out there folks.
