Even More Music from Jeff Runnings (For Against)

jeffrunningsYou get the feeling that everyone who listens to Primitives and Smalls will be duly rewarded for their anticipation, as each new single seems to bring in another musical layer from Jeff Runnings that we adore. On the latest single, the music seems almost as important, or more important than the vocals. Lurking beneath the mix are all these textural touches setting the soundscape for your ears as the voice drifts in between the walls of synth work. I also appreciate the restraint, holding the song in one beautiful space for nearly five minutes. Look for the LP via Saint Marie Records on May 6th.

Experimental Pop from Pikelet

pikeletPikelet is a project that has put a stamp on Melbourne’s music scene, and it’s important to note that its very existence provides a look into the scene, demonstrating that it’s more than just a home for incredible guitar pop. Evelyn Morris and her group return with Tronc, an eight song piece that promises the weirder side of pop. While musically you can see the affiliation to acts such as The Blow, that really just revolves around Morris’ voice. The construction seems to be a hodgepodge of understated beats and electronic tinkering, creating more of an artful approach to the genre. Look for this song and seven others when it’s released by Chapter Music on May 6th.

New Music from 50 Foot Wave

50fotowaveOut of the ashes of Throwing Muses came 50 Foot Wave, and they’ve been blasting rock n’ roll since 2003. It’s interesting to hear Kristin Hersh amidst the current climate, especially since her voice and style has definitely influenced the work of a lot of current female artists, whether they’re aware of it or not. This track opens fairly casually, just Hersh and a maneuvering guitar, waiting for the rhythm section to join her. Soon after the 30 second mark the band picks up the energy, giving heavier riffs while Hersh’s powerful vocal performance dominates your speakers. I appreciate the fact that the surface level of this track seems so simple, yet beneath it lurks varying changes in structures and time; it should make for a powerfulalbum worth of tunes; look for Bath White on may 27th via HHBTM Records.

Power Pop from Bird of Youth

birdsofyouthYou’ve got to know that when Nada Surf gives you their seal of approval to take you on tour, I’m going to take notice, and luck I did. Bird of Youth have a little more bounce than your average power-pop act, but that just makes their level of infectiousness all the more appealing. The vocals have this great pristine quality, though you can also feel a sense of longing in their delivery. This is one of the most delightful tracks I’ve come across in weeks; I want to play it again and again. They just announced Get Off, which will be released on May 20th via Kiam Records.

Here’s A New Twin Peaks Tunes

twinsIt’ll be interesting to hear the entirety of the new Twin Peaks album as a whole, as a collection. They seem to have been working different angles on all the singles we’ve heard thus far, and the newest carries on with slight musical twists. It sounds like a bit of Kurt Vile jamming with Real Estate, though I hear more of a barroom feel going on in the way the song is met with some tinkering piano. Their new album Down in Heaven is only a few weeks away, with a release on May 13th via Grand Jury…so we’ll finally get to hear how all these tracks fit in together.

PYLON to Release Live Double LP

pylonBack in the early 00s, danceable punk/art rock made a huge comeback, but one of the bands that seemed to fly under the radar of most in that rebirth was PYLON. Still, fans have clamored over their angular art punk, and now they’ll all get to hear the power contained in the band’s live setting. Even more interesting, live record was recorded over 30 years ago, highlighting the band at their peak in the Athens scene. Chunklet is releasing two of the singles this week (the album comes out in July), so go back in time with one of the greats and grab your copy.

Droning Rock from Earring

earringIt’s really hard to classify Earring, and I should probably steer clear of trying in the first place. That being said, those of you who find yourselves interested in droning noise and shoegaze will likely find your ears pleased. The band have crafted a dark wall of sound, and within that wall, deep coated vocals drift atop the mix. There’s a great deal of restraint shown by the band too, pulling back throughout the track in order to maximize the emotional appeal within the song. This song appears on the band’s new Tunn Star LP, which is being released on June 10th via Fire Talk.

The Megaphonic Thrift Makes Its Way to the USA

megaphonicIt’s been a rather big year for The Megaphonic Thrift, winning all sorts of awards in their homeland, Norway. But, there’s still the US market left to conquer, which should be easier now that the band has signed on with Old Flame Records to release Sun Stare Sound on this side of the pond. Their sound reminds me a lot of the tunes of early Stars, playing upon the dynamic interchange between male and female vocalists. I will say there’s a little more detail added to the songs too, giving a more artistic touch to theircraftsmanship. Look for the band to make waves when the album comes out later on this year.

Announcing Young Girls Party Blood LP

2016-01-25 Young Girls Party Blood Final FRONT SMALLThose of you who weren’t checking the Internet yesterday might have missed this announcement, so I wanted to be sure you knew we’ve officially announced the release of the new LP from Young Girls. This record follows up their excellent self-titled EP (which we also put out), but I think you’ll be amazed at just how complete the trio sounds on Party Blood.
