Now Announce Now Does the Trick

If there was a K Records credit card, I’d definitely be down to sign up, as the last few years, the label has been one of the dominant forces in wayward pop music, and with this new Now LP, it looks like I’ve got more money to spend. Personally, as I was just listening to Television Personalities, it kind of turns the corner and takes a more psychedelic leaning; it still feels ramshackle and on the edge of following apart, but that’s part of the beauty, as it never collapses, letting melody craftily waft into the year. The group features members of Thunder Boys and Cindy, so you’re guaranteed to have some of the best songsmiths in the underground creating new pop gems. Now Does the Trick is out on May 16th via K Records.

Scrounge Share UTG Single

When we first heard new stuff from London punks Scrounge, I couldn’t get enough of “Higher.” Today, they’ve got a slightly softer side to share with some of us, though the song has its punchy moments where the tune kicks through, as it should! The jangling guitar lick that dominates the verses in this tune is absolutely perfect, with the mix balancing things perfectly so as to maximize Lucy Alexander’s voice and lyrics; this is an important aspect as Alexander is sending out a “reminder to look after and respect your queer and trans mates.” I love the eruption that lets her share a bit of a hook and a bit of a growl, as she’s finally able to unleash her restraint in the perfect fashion. The song rips and it’ll be on Almost Like You Could, which drops April 11th via Ba Da Bing.

Pia Fraus Offer New Single

I probably don’t listen to Pia Fraus as often as I ought, but when they sprinkle out a new tune, you’ll hear my fat flapping behind me as I run to press play! They’ve let slip a brand new single, displaying a matured brand of dream pop that you’d only get from vets who’ve been doing this for damned near 30 years. You’ll find a certain maturity within the confines of the pop structure, and although they still offer up some noisy elements, those moments feel muted a bit, letting the melody churn and roll in the front of the mix. Every little turn feels purposeful, and in that, it maximizes the balance between comfort and harsh, only making me thirst for more from the Estonian outfit in the near future!

Dusty Lucite has been on my radar recently, and when this new single came to light, I was definitely grateful to see D. Crane of BOAT on board for the recording. For this track, there’s some pure magic in the winding of the track itself; the vocals seem to bend around each corner, almost circling one another in some other-worldly orbit that keeps the two united and yet at odds. Speaking of bending…some of the guitar notes take on that Pacific Northwest bending lean, and it all just swirls inside your ear canals; it’s the perfect bit of escapist pop music, and thus, I implore you go back to Dusty’s last album, Normal Harder.

101x Homegrown Presents: ATH vs SOTO SXSW Show @ Hotel Vegas (3.9)

Every year, we get to join our friends from 101X Homegrown and Side One Track One for a big old musical bash to kick off SXSW music week. Today, we bring you the news of our annual event, with details and lineup ready to go for you all! The event kicks off on March 9th at 3 PM, with some of the best bands in the Austin music scene taking over the Hotel Vegas complex; it’s three stages and 27 bands, all for the low low price of $0. All you have to do is show up, be kind to your fellow attendees, and sit back and enjoy yourself. Will Johnson Announces Diamond City

You ever fall in love with a musical voice that just breaks you? Well, many years ago a friend handed me an old Centro-matic CD, and I’ve been hooked on Will Johnson ever since. Today, we’re stoked to bring you the great news that Will’s got a new record on the horizon, with a single that perfectly exemplifies my fascination. This song features sort of off-the-rhythm percussion and a twanging guitar, all of it creating this full-to-the-brim backdrop, yet somehow clinging to this starkness that allows Johnson’s voice to succeed. I love how he can move in-between throated warble and intimate whisper, letting the song open up with these soaring backing harmonies that provide an amazing accent to the track. Diamond City will be out on April 4th via Keeled Scales.

Tropical Fuck Storm Share Goon Show + Sign to Fire Records

Seems as good a day as any to spend some times overseas with Aussie outfits, and here we are again with Melbourne’s Tropical Fuck Storm. The band have just announced their singing to Fire Records, along with a slew of tour dates and a brand new single. Gareth Liddiard vocals in the first half of the song set the tone, his voice marching to the thump of the percussion, intermittently offset by the backing chorus of Fiona and Erica for angelic contrast. Liddiard seems to be stomping out his notes, hitting metronomic stride as he delivers a world-weary viewpoint for this “golden age of assholes.” Those familiar with the group’s performances might also be curious as to the pop accessibility of the tune, but worry not, your moment comes in the tune’s latter half, as they offer up a barrage of noise and left-turns. Keep an eye out for the band as they make their way Stateside in June/July.

George Children Prep Kitchen Sink Drama

If you’re going to hit the road, one of the best ways to make a little extra cash is to have solid merch on hand. So, with a tour on the schedule for George Children, they’ve prepped the Kitchen Sink Drama EP, which will only be available on their West Coast tour…or via Dandy Boy Records! This song feels like looking out onto the world, searching for any signs of positivity (as I’m sure we’re all doing right now); it operates with this uplifting guitar strum, as Jordan Chipman narrates a car ride with a “beautiful stranger.” It’s light in nature, but some notes just dig deep into your soul, and this is one such song. You can grab the new EP by catching the band live, or grab the cassette before its February 20th release date.

Low Monroe Releases Deviant Hotline Video

While we admit to throwing certain generic modifiers into a lot of posts (unfairly so, occasionally), but as unfortunate as that can be, there’s no better way to turn you onto Low Monroe than by depicting them as the bastard child of Bauhaus and Joy Division. When listening to their new “Deviant Hotline” tune, you can hear the darkness, but like the aforementioned Manchester outfit, there’s a buoyancy to the shadows, particularly in the drive of the rhythm section. Guttural vocal tones give you that intoxicating stomach knot, built upon anxiety and primal desires, coating the tune in this ominous texture. You deserve post-punk like this. Go ahead, get lost in the darkened corners of this great jam.

The Matthew Teardrop Orchestra Drop Hard Feelings Video

Wanted you to wake up this morning with some riotous energy, and what better way to embark on that journey than to grab a hold of a new video from The Matthew Teardrop Orchestra. Last last year, they dropped their excellent self-titled EP, and one of the standout tunes now gets the proper video treatment, giving us the opportunity to throw some weight. This song is as anthemic as it gets, with the constant howl of “hard feeling” hitting the listener time and time again; it brings me great joy to just belt this one out at the top of my lungs, just as Matthew Teardrop does! They carry their punk aesthetics throughout their hometown of Detroit, and in the back of a van, illustrating their ties to their home and the joy with which they approach their songwriting.
