Helena Deland Returns with Altogether Unaccompanied Vol V

Over the last few years, Helena Deland has sprinkled our worlds with snippets of tunes that would or wouldn’t be released unto the masses. These are not throwaway tracks, but rather songs that perhaps didn’t fit into the narrative arc or storytelling of whichever album Deland was working with…and today, we get Altogether Unaccompanied Vol. V. On the first of the tunes, I’m drawn to the hum of the microphone; it pushes that vibe of which can only be shared between an artist and a listener, a moment almost too fragile. On the flip side, you get a little bit of the whimsy playfulness embedded in a dreamy folk aesthetic, which is one of the many charms of Helena’s craft. She’ll also be jumping overseas for a handful of UK dates in March, so if you’re in that neck of the woods…keep yer eyes peeled.

Broncho Share Funny Video + Announce Natural Pleasure

Broncho has been away for a few years, and while that may have temporary halted their continuous rise as indie rock stars, the announcement today of Natural Pleasure should very much put them back in the limelight. This tune below feels very Oklahoma to me, and I’m not sure Ryan would see it this way, but the first 20 seconds of this track feels like an homage to Colourmusic, working in a cyclical hook that comes and comes and comes. It opens the tune into this sort of hazy wash of bouncing grooves, bubbling and popping in all the right spots. The way the rhythm section grooves and turns throughout keeps the song moving, though the twist and curl of the vocals you in this dream state. Wonderful to have the band back, and their new LP will be out April 25th.

Jetstream Pony Announce Bowerbirds and Blue Things

I slacked off a little on Friday, but one of the jams that I absolutely had to cover to make up for it was the album announcement of Jetstream Pony. They announced Bowerbirds and Blue Things last Friday, and from the first single, it has absolutely everything you’d expect or want: the guitars have a distorted ring to them, on the cusp of jangling but with more bite; the vocals are sweet and melodic, with accented backing vocals building depth in all the right spots; there’s a breakdown to give you the slightest mid-tune left turn. Dropping a tune like this sets a statement that the entirety of the LP is going to be nothing short of pure pop bliss. You can get the new LP from Shelflife/Spinout Nuggets on March 28th.

Myriads Share Spider Single

Having begun as a mostly solo project, Maria DeHart’s Myriads now seems bigger than its early bedroom beginnings. But, while the sound of the latest single feels huge, in terms of effort, it doesn’t lose the sincerity in the way her craft works. Moments throughout tend to get punched up and aggressive, only to pull things back in and provide a little bit of softer intimacy to the listener. It’s a balancing act, but one that certainly illustrates the growth of her songwriting, as well as hints at where her new EP is headed; Find Ourselves again is scheduled for release this Spring.

Club 8 Remind Us None of This Will Matter When You Are Dead

Another month, and of course, another Club 8 song; I’m hoping they’re sticking with the goal of one new track a month, as there’s never a bad time for this Swedish pop outfit to drop a tune. This one was really rad from the beginning, hitting with more of a driving energy that caught me off guard for a moment; I could hear a similarity to the urgency that the Ravenonettes bring to some of their pieces, which gives a more rock n’ roll feel throughout. Now, that doesn’t mean it’s not going to have that sugary center, as you’ll hear that employed here too, and boy does the mixture of the two styles feel seamless and sweet. See you next month Club 8 (I hope)!

Last Week’s Jams (2.3 – 2.7)

We covered a fair amount of ground last week, though perhaps not quite as much rolling out as the previous week of tunes. We did get a new Jad Fair/Samuel Locke Ward video premiere that can only be seen HERE. That being said, there were tons of other tunes we can run up our playlist flagpole, like the news tune from Sharp Pins, as part of Kai’s reissue of Radio DDR. Dean Wareham dropped another single from his new record, so that’s good news for all of us. Plus, the end of the week hit hard, with great new ditties from Exploding Flowers and Mythical Motors to round out a solid week of tunes. Stream them below.

Semihelix Share Two New Singles + Antones Release Show (2.9)

One of our favorite Austin acts is channeling the great radio alternative, so tune in below to the latest hits from Semihelix! You can hear the riotgrrl spirit coursing through these tunes, as Geannie consistently just rips right through these licks and vocal lines with the perfect amount of indifferent cool. Both of these new jams will appear on a fresh 7″ from Bleached Records, and to celebrate this, the band will be hosting a Release Party over at Antones on Sunday evening, and they ask that you join them! That 7″ will hit the masses on Monday, but you can get a sneak preview by playing the tunes below. If you can’t make it, don’t forget to grab the 7″ while supplies are limited!

Mythical Motors Announce Travelogues and Movie Stills

Matt Addison and company, aka Mythical Motors, never seem to waste any time; they just happened to sprinkle a few records out last year, and now we’re anticipating a solid new collection this Spring. It only takes two seconds for the swing of this track to immediately drop right into your lap, hitting you with these muted jangles; they have a sharpness but cling to their melodic center. For me, it’s the earnestness of the vocals throughout the chorus that’s absolutely charming; they have this feathered lightness, but still feel like they’re punching through the roof…save the moments when they’re pulled back to mix in swirls of warmth. And, for as many times as I have listened and heard the familiarity, there are little interchanges in the song that completely change the direction, so each corner turned feels like a breath of fresh air. Travelogues and Movie Stills will be out via Repeating Cloud on April 18th.

Another Single from Exploding Flowers

An unexpected joy for this year will be getting to hear a new album from Exploding Flowers; they return this Spring with their first new release in 5 long years. This tune finds them in prime guitar pop glory; they settle into the circular seance of guitars, with the occasional drum fill adding in some textural depth. You’ll find a lot of joy in the way the vocals sit, soothingly swimming about in the center of the tune, though they’re not overproduced, so they fit perfectly into the grander picture being pushed out here. And like that, the wind blows the song into a tumbling breakdown and its over, as there’s no need to linger, because you’ll be back to play it again in no time. Watermelon/Peacock will be out on March 21st via Meritorio Records.

New Silver Girl Drop Loud Love Video

Finnish outfit New Silver Girl have been on our radar since some of their earliest releases via our friends over in Soliti. This year, they’re dropping a new LP titled Wild Carnation, and we’ve got the group’s latest single for you to throw down. You’re certain to hear a bit of psychedelic swagger in this single, but there’s this hallucinogenic fire that weaves its way into the song. In going with this approach, the group continues their cinematic nature, blending rock elements with a theatrical presence that sees the band moving all over the musical map. Be sure to keep it real with the breakdown boogie in the song’s latter half.
