New Music from Ex-Cult

ex-cult_vice_670Couldn’t have Tuesday pass without throwing out something a little bit heavier, like this brand new jam from Ex-Cult.  These guys have been one of our favorite acts since they popped up, and I’ve really enjoyed the new music they’ve been working on.  Personally, I like the recording here, with really clear vocals up front, while the rest of the band pummels you with forceful drums and noisy guitar lines.  They’ve got a new record titled Midnight Passenger coming out on April 29th via the reliable Goner Records.  Take a little listen and get your energy up right this minute.

SXSW 2014 Interview: HOTT MT

Stanley Brinks and The Wave Pictures Unite!

sbwpIt’s great when two of your favorite artists combine, especially when their sounds mesh together so well.  Today, I’m bringing you a track from Stanley Brinks (of Herman Dune) working, again, with his friends in The Wave Pictures.  The bands both dwell in a light-hearted indiepop world, though with the Waves Pictures, there’s a more of a focus on the guitar work.  These lads have worked together before, though Gin is their first effort since 2010.  You’ll be able to grab this record from Fika Recordings this week! SXSW 2014 Interview: Anne

anneWe’ve been covering lots of Anne tracks lately, and the music that’s coming out of this artist is pretty kick ass.  It’s geared for all you folks ready to throw down on the dance floor, albeit with a slightly different vibe. He’s likely to keep his set pretty heavy with tracks from his recent album, Pulling Chain.  Here’s what he had to say before making his way into town, and personally, I think these are some of the best answers we’ve gotten.

New Chain and the Gang Jam

chainI feel like the work of Ian Svenonious is possibly some of the most underrated American music out there.  Whether he’s doing work in The Make Up or Nation of Ulysses, or his latest project, Chain and the Gang, every thing he’s done is a must own. I love the way his delivery comes off like an edgy spoken word, while he works in front of the distorted guitar line and metronome-style drumming.  The group has their new album, Maximum Rock N’ Roll coming out in April via Radical Elite in the US.  Give this a spin.

Return of Indiepop Greats The Haywains

Haywains-2012-01-300x225There are two great things about the resurgence of vinyl production over the last decade: great bands reemerge and great labels pop up.  One of my favorite little labels, Cloudberry Records, have signed on to release new music from  long silent group, The Haywains.  On May 30th we’ll get out our hands on the group’s new EP on May 30th, and it’s definitely going to be as infectious as this track.  You’ve got the deep-throated vocals backed by a soft-female bit, all playing to a spritely little bounce.  Glad to see this group back at it more regularly after almost a 20 year silence (they came back out in 2012–18 year silence).

Missed Jams: The Courtneys + Fear of Men

courtneysIt’s been a crazy couple of weeks, and with SXSW a week away, things don’t look to be slowing down.  In all that nonsense I’ve missed a few tracks I wanted to share with you today, both which feature incredible female singers.  The first is a jam from The Courtneys, who’ve just put this Cassingle out via Burger Records, as well as signing up for a tour with Tegan and Sara.

The second track comes from the much-anticipated debut from Fear of Men record, Loom. It’s another sign of good things to come, and is actually being release as a limited single via Art Is Hard Records.  The official LP comes out on April 22 via Kanine.

Pleased to Meet You: Landlady

artworks-000070713585-wtoc0s-t500x500Collective groups are always interesting.  Sometimes you get to witness the powerful combination of songwriters, and other times, you get to watch things fall apart.  Landlady, the project of Adam Schatz of Man Man and his friends is picking up steam out of Brooklyn.  They’ve released a new single as they finish up work on their new album, which is slated for a summer release on Hometapes. This tune begins with a little piano tinkering before working in some jittery vocals that are reminiscent of Schatz’s main project.  The group heads on into Austin for SXSW, and while they’re name might not be out there just yet, it’s definitely one you should keep on your radar…even if you’re not going to be here for the festival.

Frail Track from Real//Talks

realtalksThere comes a time when some tracks just hit you, and today, as the cold weather returns, this tune from Queensland’s Real//Talks is perfectly fitting for my daily playlist.  The track doesn’t push forward too quickly, offering a fragile perspective that’s draped across a minimal piece of piano and guitar strumming.  Eventually, the song takes on a life of its own, blossoming into this swelling sound that captures the beauty of pop music. They’ll be releasing a self-titled EP this May, and let’s hope it’s as honest as the tune below.

SXSW 2014 Interview: Boogarins

crop_630 (1)Today’s SXSW Interview comes to you via Brazilian band, Boogarins.  While the country is often known for its tropicalia and dance stylings, you’ll get something a little bit different from these lads; they’ve got a composition that compiles varying elements of loops and sounds into a tightly-knit piece of psych-pop for their album As Plantas Que Curam..a must listen in my book. We’re definitely excited to catch these guys, and maybe even talk a little bit of football (South American style); here’s the responses from Benke. Read more
