Bright Pop from Army Navy

armynavyIt’s raining a ton here in Austin, well, it was, so I need something to lighten up everyone’s spirits as we call it a day over here at our office.  I figured the latest track from one of our favorites, Army Navy, would do just the trick. This time, there’s a bit more energy in the songwriting, though the band still maintains that gentle side that made them so endearing in the first place (see 1.07). If the band can keep writing tracks like this one, we’ll all see their popularity continue to grow and grow…that’s a good thing! You can find this track on their Crushed EP, which comes out on August 20th.

Check Out New Rock from Joanna Gruesome

joannagruesomeA long while ago I posted a hit from Joanna Gruesome, and it appears Slumberland Records were watching, as they just picked up the Cardiff group to release the band’s debut album, Weird Sister.  On the first single from said album, the group comes out with a rioting rock taste, blasting off noisily.  But, one of the reason’s I love the band is evident in the track too; they pull back from the barrage of noise and add a sweetness to the track, with softer melodies and a bit of serenity….of course they blast right back off again.  You can grab the album from the group on September 10th when it hits stores.

Floating Pop from Money

MONEY-byJulienBourgeois02-e1331244412408There’s really not too much information floating about for Manchester outfit, Money, although they did get a decent response with their Cillian Murphy directed video.  I’m pretty impressed with the group’s sound, with the group making stunningly dense pop tunes with various movements within their tracks.  You’ve got to listen carefully to grasp, or hear rather, all the tiny touches the band put into their songwriting.  Should make for a remarkable debut when they release The Shadow of Heaven on August 26th via Bella Union.

Indie Pop Winner from Bubblegum Lemonade

matinee087It’s been sort of a sad few months for indie pop fans, with a few of the smaller labels calling it quits.  But, on the bright side of things, the next few weeks promise a few announcements from the always excellent Matinee Recordings. The first release on their list is the brand new Have You Seen Faith 7″ from Bubblegum Lemonade.  Laz has fleshed out his line-up, creating three beautiful songs that illustrate the purity of indie pop.  His voice, as always, has this beautiful warmth, and the guitar work rings perfectly in the background.  You can order the new 7″ now from the Matinee Store.

New Track from Porches

porchesThe last month has been pretty kind to New York’s Porches, garnering a strong positive response with their early single.  They’re back already with the newest tune from their upcoming album, Slow Dance in the Cosmos.  For my ears, this song has two personalities, both equally enjoyably.  The first is sort of an amped up sad-bastard approach to pop structure; it slowly builds until the change up. It’s brief, but there’s a bouncing step that comes in a couple of times in the track. I like that it gives a different touch, though slight, to the song’s overall feeling. Give it a go and see what you think.  You can pick up the album on August 27th via Exploding in Sound Records.

Texas Spotlight: New Tune from Young Girls

youngWe’ll stand by this band forever and ever, amen. The dudes in Young Girls are a blast to hang with, and they write exceptionally great tunes to go with their personality.  I don’t know why, but I always think about a weird combination of Richie Valens and the Smiths, but it might be Charlie’s hair that does that. Regardless, the group just recorded a short live set at Austin’s KVRX, and it’s got all new hits for you to taste.  You can pick up all four songs and donate to the group’s valiant cause HERE.  This is my personal favorite, though they’re all hits in my mind.

Enjoy Rainbow Gun Show

artworks-000041789858-k35f4p-t500x500I just picked up this gem of a 7″ from Rainbow Gun Show the other day at the record store, and I’m so hooked that I had to share it with you all.  The Chicago act has this lo-fi quality that bursts with catchy melodies.  I can’ describe the sound perfectly, so I won’t even try, but I think that this 7″ has the making of a great future for the group; they clearly have elements that make their music accessible and interesting.  If you’re into the sound, you can pick the release up from Hozac Records, who I consider pretty dependable.

Mixhell Wants To Show You The Way

Time to kick off your weekend dance party.

I was trolling the internets for weekend kick off jams and came across this gem from Mixhell called “The Way” off the presently available album SPACES. It is a note for note cover of Fastball’s hit. Actually, it isn’t. It is a dance jam with beats that reminds me of Radio4‘s party starters or The Rapture‘s extended blasts and slaps you in the ass to shimmy. So shimmy.

Interesting note, the band is Laima Leyton and Iggor Cavalera. Iggor is the drummer of Sepultura. So there, a factoid to share with your friends. #themoreyouknow

Night Moves Show Preview + Ticket Giveaway

NightMoves_PhotoBy_NickWalker_3There’s something about the summer time that makes listening to folk music absolutely perfect.  I can’t explain it exactly, but I do know that Night Moves are one of those bands that seem to fit this bill; it’s a good thing they’ll be playing at Mohawk next Friday with locals Lord Buffalo.  Their recent album, Colored Emotions, has received tons of praise for its nod to folk history, which makes the setting of an indoor set at Mohawk ideal for an intimate show you and your friends won’t soon forget.  We’re giving away two tickets to the show, and all you have to do is leave a CLEVER comment. We’ll pick a winner next Wednesday at 5 PM, and let you know! You can also go the traditional route and buy tickets HERE.

Here’s a recent set from the boys at Bonaroo: Bonaroo!

Quiet Life Offer New Rocker

quietlifePortland’s Quiet Life have totally won me over today.  While the song started off a bit slow, the evolving rock aspect really took hold of me.  It sort of maintains a desert rock feel, rolling along with the drum beat.  It all culminates with a nice stomp near the end with an accompanying guitar solo; the tune pauses for some more melodic moments, then stomps right back off into the end.  If you like what you’re hearing from Quiet Life, then you can pick up their new LP, Wild Pack, on October 29th, courtesy of Mama Bird Recording Co.
