Power Pop from Curling
There is so much going on in this new Curling tune that you sort of have to peel it layer by layer, uncovering new little bits and pieces along way. When it opens with this synthesized wash you’re momentarily thinking you might be on some space-aged journey, and you’re not entirely far off on that one…though they quickly push into brilliant power pop moments; there’s something in the craft that’s both 90s alt rock and 2000s indie…like Ash partying with Grandaddy. Then, as the tune progresses, they pull back some of the covers on their craft, leaving you with these subtle melodies before smashing forth with more pop hooks. As you awaken today, maybe it’s hard to get out of bed and maybe its hard to rub the sleep from your eyes and maybe the outline of the world is bleak. So, settle into this Toriyama track, first thing. It’s a mellowed bit of slowcore magic, drifting carefully with this warped texture surrounding the craft as a whole; it allows for the vocal work to kind of reverberate and swallow you whole as it rings again and again. At a certain point, you’ll find yourself completely lost in the whole of the structure, circulating over and over, much in the same fashion as the tune itself.
