Powerful Ballad from Vera Sola

While Vera Sola is just now preparing her debut solo effort, she’s been working in the industry as part of Elvis Perkins’ band for some time. Perhaps that explains why her first single sounds so accomplished; it wears years of musicianship in its fabric. Her voice has this quality that seems to suspend her notes in mid air, with various instruments delicately layered behind…from slow-tempo drums to forlorn strings. It’s a pretty enchanting number, from start to finish…again, remarkable considering this is her first solo outing. Look for her debut, Shades, to drop in November of this year.

 

David Nance Group Announces New LP

Well, it’s that time again, with David Nance announcing another release, this time under the moniker David Nance Group; this time it will be handled by the esteemed Trouble in Mind Records. Our first listen to the record gives us this fuzzy roots-rock riffage, the heavier sort that almost makes you stomp your feet and shake out your long shaggy hair. Nance slings his emphatic voice with an aura of indifference, haphazardly sliding in harmonies where he sees fit. You ever get one of those songs that just makes you feel? Yeah, this is one of those such tunes. Look for Peaced and Slightly Pulverized to drop October 5th, with a slew of tour dates throughout the Fall.

School Damage Have a New Single

The Aussie quartet School Damage are about to unleash their second LP into the world, and with it, perhaps we’ll finally have a handle on the band’s brand of wobbly pop music. When listening, the sharp guitars ringing blend with the sound of keys, while the rhythm section spins you out of control. Hooks come by the way of the vocals, with this particular song getting quite a few “na na nas” up in your ears. If you like your punk rock a little bit left of the dial, a little bit spirited and far more weird, then you’re going to love A to X; it drops on August 31st via Chapter Music. Nights and Weekends is out in just a few weeks, so we’ve got to continue to support our friends in Teddy Glass. They just dropped this new track, a mixture of soul and funky pop undertones; it has this wobbly synth/beat line that sort of keeps you unsettled in the best way. Of course, Peter holds down the vocal display, and interestingly, he’s almost got this fatherly tone to his voice this go-round…as if he’s passing on some sage advice your way. You know, just another Austin act making good on their promise to keep bringing hot tracks our way.

Enjoying This New Tiny Ruins

Feel like we’ve been hanging out with the Oceanic region a great deal today (Terry, The Ocean Party), so why not wrap up Wednesday with this gorgeous number from New Zealand’s Tiny Ruins. Hollie Fullbrook and her band have just signed with Ba Da Bing, for their first North American release…but those with a keen ear have surely heard the project. I like the fragility of Fullbrook’s voice, draped over the careful orchestration behind her; there’s a gradual swell to the song that seems to make it rise, only for the band to just let it hang in the air. Should be a busy year for Tiny Ruins.

 

One More Wild Nothing Single

It’s interesting to listen to early recordings of Wild Nothing and see just how far Jack Tatum has come in songwriting, in regards to both skill and style. I love the way he sets you up in this song to get hit over head with the natural hook; he spends the first minute and a half with this brooding sensation with twinkling guitars ringing in the far off. Your settled, and probably enjoying the new track’s dreamier quality…and then the tune jumps in with a more pronounced punch amidst twisting and turning guitar lines…somehow it feels more powerful than anything he’s crafted. All things are pointing towards Indigo being a sensational hit when it drops August 31st via Captured Tracks.

Terry Release New Single and Video

Hats off to RSTB for sharing this new Terry gem off the band’s forthcoming I’m Terry album. In contrast to the spritely bounce of their first single, “The Whip,” their new single offers a calming dosage of pop. Oddly, the rhythm section holds a similar style, but the pace and the presentation of the vocals give the song a softer underbelly. The closing moments do bring in some brash discord, illustrating that the band aren’t bound to stylistic chains of any one genre. They’ll be releasing the new record via Upset the Rhythm on August 31st.

Beautiful Bobey Tune Coming Your Way

Honestly, I didn’t expect to love this song so much, but it continues to seep into my skin, playing over and over again. Bobey spends the first 45 seconds offering you up these carefully orchestrated guitar lines, looping through your speakers; there’s a wispy quality to the softened twang of the strings. That perfectly sets up the entrance of the feathery vocals, rising and falling in pitch with the tone of the guitar work. And, as if to channel Grizzly Bear, Emily Ritz joins in the fray on vocals to add this sweeping textural pop feeling that soothes. Bobey releases Siblings on August 24th via Golden Brown, featuring the gem below.

Did You Stream the Latest Ocean Party LP

I.B.O., the latest LP from our Aussie friends The Ocean Party just dropped, and we wanted to make sure you had a chance to hear it in its entirety; should only take about 12 minutes. The great thing, and quite a change, is the band challenged themselves to write 12 1 minute songs…SUCCESS! It has some staples from the band’s already accomplished sound, but there are tunes like “Fallin’ Off the Bone” that illustrate a completely different side of the group. Don’t worry if you feel like this just whets your appetite, making you thirst for more…there’s still a few months left in the year, so I’m sure we’ll get another Ocean Party release in some format! You can grab the LP from Emotional Response Records here in the States, or Spunk overseas.
