Glaze Shares A Video

Glaze played earlyish during our SxSW party, ATH VS SOTO. I called them out as a local highlight when it came time to reflect of this year’s conference. They have an effective blend pop and gaze; do we have Gaze Pop as a sub genre name post tag yet and why not? The trio has released a video for their latest song “Daisy”. The set up for the video is straightforward according to Stephen McEwlee (guitar and vox) – “Falling in love is like being at a carnival… pretty and fun, but by the end of it you’re ready to throw up.” The song also makes me anxious for more new stuff, but if you want to review with the 2017 Wasted Mind EP, check out their bandcamp.

The Black Watch Prepare New LP

Having released an EP earlier this year, it only makes sense that prolific act The Black Watch return not too long after with news of a fresh full-length. I’m forever intoxicated by the guitar sound on their records, and the opening lines of this tune grab me immediately…just before vocals and band join in. There’s this calm that seems to hang in Fredrick’s vocal delivery; it carries melodic optimism that rises to meet up with the pace of the song. The accents on this track are pretty spot on too, from the cascading guitar in the distance to the plucking of strings in the front of the mix. Witches! will be released on July 22nd via Atom Records.

Chilled Out Summer Banger from Das Kope

This track from Das Kope is going to end up on every part playlist I craft throughout the summer, but don’t think of it as an out and out banger of a tune. Instead, it’s a teaser, slowly walking you along with these coated vocal lines stretched over guitar lines. But, if you wait, you’re going to get that reward as the song builds on multiple occasions for the release of the track’s title associated lyrics. The Brazilian producer is pretty new to the scene, but if he’s going to keep crafting hits like this, I’m going to keep coming back for more.

Bedroom Pop from Lost Film

Late last year I talked a lot about how much I enjoyed Broken Spectre, the last full length from Lost Film. Just the other day Jim Hewitt upped some new tracks, in demo form, of course, to hold you over until we have news on a more finite release. Even in an unfinished ditty, you can tell Hewitt and co know their way around endearing numbers. Both singles have this charming lack of urgency, with the drums primarily utilized for pacing. Seems like the baseball themed track is currently the most popular of the two; it’s got synth work atop the aforementioned drumming with Hewitt crooning over it all; the special bit comes when that guitar line jumps into the fray. Just in an interesting step in the process, and hopefully we get to hear more real soon.

New Ditty from Stanley Brinks and Freshcard

Over the last few years, Stanley Brinks and Freshcard have been one of my favorite duos. They craft a blend of playful indiepop and folk that fans of either genre will find endearing; they even manage to capture that playful air in their performance in the video for this single. Musically, the song’s pretty simple, with the selling point being the juxtaposition of Brinks’ and Freshcard’s voices set over a steady percussive beat and gentle guitar strum. The two will release their new collection of songs, Midnight Tequila, will be released on June 29th via Fika Recordings.

 

 

Bombshell Nightlight Prep Debut LP

Jon Cardiello is the man behind Bombshell Nightlight, a bedroom pop operation crafted in the confines of a remote cabin in Montana. Placid Lake is the result of the time spent, and what a wondrous result. Cardiello’s voice is striking from the moment it enters, surrounded by this carefully meandering guitar line and careful percussion. It’s a gentle moment, but the track begins to build; you can feel the tension pushing you forwards. Supporting vocals lift Jon’s voice up high, crashing down just after the 2 minute mark with more purpose that establishes the track’s apex…then slowly it fades away into where it all began…a beautiful musical journey for any listener. Placid Lake will be released in August, courtesy of the joint efforts of Anything Bagel and Reflective Tapes.

Talkies Have a New LP and a Tour

Talkies have changed up the line-up slightly since their 2016 effort, Bright/Sunny, but one thing that always remains in the work of Ray Seraphin is his knack for crafting infectious melodies throughout. Our first listen to new work has a bit of a poppy fuzz to it; a natural throbbing bounce kicks the pace, with a guitar knifing it’s way into the mix from the background. Sort of reminds me of this band the Comas, or maybe a more rock-influenced version of Grandaddy…it’s fuzzy, but centered around Ray’s uncanny ability to incorporate a hook. Everything we’ve heard from the new LP shows a lot of maturity and polish, leading us to believe that Kowtow‘s going to be a must have album. The group drop the album on July 13th with a wild show at Barracuda that includes Sweet Spirit, Mean Jolene and the Donkeys…they’ll spend the rest of the month traveling out West. Yippee Ki Yay and Electrify Me Records will be handling the distribution of said record…so get your wallets ready. Keep an eye HERE for all the tour dates.

Listen to the Whole Red Sleeping Beauty EP

Well, I’m pretty sure that the world’s going to be a better place today, at least if this morning’s listen to the Always On Your Side EP is anything to go by. I mean, I can’t deny the catchy powers crafted by Red Sleeping Beauty this round. “Always on Your Side” is crafted with hook-laden synths and warm vocal melodies, then it’s immediately followed by the playful bounding of “Falling Out of Love.” That’s it. I can’t write about it anymore. It’s just too delicious. If, like me, you’re enjoying these four tracks, they’re available in a limited capacity via Sunday Records.

Zone Out With Steve Hauschildt

How’s that World Cup going? My beloved Spurs are all having good showings for their respective countries, so far. Kane has two goals, Eriksen another and Trippier was wrecking defensive tactics with quality service from the wing. I digress.

There is no mystery that Ghostly International is one of my favorite labels, from Tycho to Beacon to Matthew Dear. They have another gem of a release pending with Steve Hauschildt‘s full-length album Dissolvi, due early August. Currently working out of Chicago, the Cleveland born producer employs texture and an ethereal vocal from Julianna Barwick to create a haze inducing atmosphere with progressive weight while percussion echoes with subtlety. This record is gonna be good.

Still Corners Announce New LP

Still Corners recorded their brand new album here in the heart of Texas, so we’ve got to write about it, no? Doesn’t matter anyways, as the song’s definitely something that will grab you. The first minute of the track is spent with little guitar chords being plucked while synths build the sound in the background. Then the percussive element unfolds, sharp and to the point…waiting for Tessa to enter the picture. Her voice has this smoky resonance that blankets the subtle electronic groove of the track. The group drop Slow Air on August 17th via Wrecking Light, followed by a solid chunk of North American tour dates starting in September.
