Love This New Track from Great Earthquake

Admittedly, I’m a label stalker, and for the last few years, Lost and Lonesome is a label I repeatedly go back to each week to unearth new gems. They’ve quietly put up this beautiful new track from Great Earthquake…the project of Noah Symons who drums for Lost Leaves. This number is one of patience and restraint, slowly plodding along with lyrical content revolving around the song’s title; it’s a tune about appreciating the life around you. If you’re looking for like-minded acts, then perhaps travel back in time to the music of American Football, simplistic and rewarding. Your day will only get better with this song floating around in your world. Look for Thinking & Making to come out later this year!

SXSW Interview: Nassau

We continue our SXSW interviews by catching up with Nassau, the duo of Justin Wilcox and Jeffrey Silverstein . Late last year they released the excellent Heron, and they’re riding that momentum all the way into Austin. They’ll be playing their official show on March 16th at 18th Over Austin at 8 PM. New Tune from Bill Baird

Nothing makes me happier than the fact that Bill Baird consistently writes beautiful songs, and his latest single is just another in a long line of wondrous tunes. This time, Bill his joined by his friend (and ours) Jana Horn for a duet performance. It’s an airy affair, with the guitar notes almost coming across understated, sliding subconsciously into your mind. Jana’s voice comes in first, and it fits in perfectly with they hazy imagery of the video; she has this way of singing just above a whisper that’s absolutely intoxicating. Bill joins her for the chorus before taking on a short verse of his own…then they return together as the sun finally rises. This song will appear on Bill’s new LP, Gone, which is slated for release Friday, March 2nd.

Another Jam from Nihilist Cheerleader

I’ve spent quite a bit of time with Nihilist Cheerleader as of late, particularly the first few singles from their new album, Riot, Right?. This round you’re likely to adore the band even more than before, especially if you’ve spent anytime listening to the likes of Screaming Females or even Speedy Ortiz; I think I find them wading in the waters where the two meet. Guitar chords are sharp and jagged, and the vocal performance is a full-force emphatic punch to anyone willing to listen. Still, while strikingly brash, the group maintain a circle around pop sensibility, flirting with it, though never wholly diving into that pond. This is your new favorite band, I promise. Look for their new LP from Perfect Attendance Records on March 30th.

Poppy Shoegaze from Wylderness

This new Wylderness track has instant gratification for those fans of the intersection of shoegaze and dream pop; the guitars do a fuzzy dance in the distance while the rhythm section establishes pace. Then the vocals comes in, surfing atop the song’s structure, falling with the cresting waves of the track; they also have this drawn out syllabic approach, giving off a ghostly vibe amidst the pop sensationalism. If you like what you’re hearing from the group, then you’d be wise to keep track of them, as they’ll be releasing their self-titled debut LP on Succulent Recordings on March 23rd.

Give Espaniel a Listen

Music discovery is pretty easy these days with all the Spotify and the cool blogs, but I’m still partial to the communal discovery…and luckily I have a few friends to turn me onto rad acts, like @psychotwee over on Twitter. Following on the regular led me to this sparkling pop number from E’spaniel. It’s clear that the band have an affection for huge guitar pop…moments in you’ll hear those guitars circling overhead in charming fashion. This song is wrapped around a central melody, touched up by the slightest dose of backing vocals to drive home the pop sensibility. Pretty charming outing from this group…we’ll keep you posted on more as we find it.

Fun Pop Tune from Oxen

If you come here on the regular, you’re clearly aware of my affection for Swedish pop tunes, and Oxen gives me another chance to dote on the country’s pop scene. When this tune kicks off, it’s in a fairly lighthearted manner, twinkling guitar lines working over vocals and another layer of strummed guitar. But, soon the beat drops in and you’re tapping your toes along the ride as the guitars stutter to the infectious chorus. The young duo are still finishing up the work on their new album, with this being our first glimpse at the goods to come our way.

New Hit from Red Sleeping Beauty

Red Sleeping Beauty have been around crafting pop tunes for nearly 30 years, and the last few years have seen them really kick back into gear. At current, they’re in the studio working on a new LP, so in the meantime they’ve dropped this delightful hit for all of us to devour. It’s a seemingly simple tune, with driving electronics that build in a natural hook. That catchy line allows for the entrance of the smooth vocal combination of Nikolas Angergard and Kristina Borg; their performance definitely makes the song a special one.

Here Comes That New Parquet Courts Album

I think I needed a break from Parquet Courts after their first couple of albums; they were everywhere, putting on killer shows and releasing pretty solid tracks. So I took a break, but this great new single definitely has me ready to devote myself to being a Parquet Courts fan. As ever evolving, they still have their distinct sound, though it’s unfolding in different ways, perhaps hard-hitting at moments…this tune in particular seems to have definitive sections…so, diverse, brash and weighed down by hooks…yeah, I’m in. Wide Awake! will be released on May 18th via Rough Trade.

Why Not Listen to Anthony Rochester

I’ve always admired the work that Jigsaw Records has done, and I’m really stoked on their latest release from Anthony Rochester. Honestly, it’s low-key pop with perfect execution; it’s as endearing as it is dreamy. Opener “Sing us a Seaside Song” works twinkling guitar lines over minimal percussion, or get into the light-hearted side of pop music with “Cat food etc.” Regardless of which song you land on, you’re going to be rewarded with tunes that delight time and time again; Anthony Rochester Sings for You is available now.
