New Track from Cock and Swan

We’ve definitely been flexing our love of electronic pop music the last few weeks, as there’s been an influx of great hits coming our way…just like this Cock & Swan tune. It builds really slowly, the way one would expect from a track on Holodeck; imagine the opening of Stranger Things, but here you get the vocals of Ola Hungerford. Her presence elevates the track above mere copycat, immersing the listener in a late night dreamscape you won’t want to leave. Look for the duo to drop Dream Alone on November 3rd via Hush Hush Records.

New Pop from Eoin Dolan

To be fair, I hadn’t really heard of Eoin Dolan, but since he passed me his new record last week, I’ve been spending a lot of time with it. While it’s easily defined as pop music, I’m finding it rather difficult to really pen down like-minded acts…perhaps early Ariel Pink or Mac Demarco, or maybe some of Alex G’s early home recordings. There are some really beautiful moments like “Forgotten Star,” featuring Dolan’s soaring vocal prowess, but also some wobbly pop moments like “Ella.” Anyways, Ubique is a rewarding listen from the get-go, so do yourself a favor and spend a little time here today.

It has been a pretty good week of electronic jams. From the new Fever Ray today to Bayonne’s latest to the Korine track. All solid offerings. Maybe you should just resolve to shimmy all weekend with this cooler weather. It is finally fall. LCD Soundsystem out at COTA seems a good way to spend Halloween. I am hoping my skwuad can rock our onesies. If you see a platypus, perhaps with a camera, say hi.

I will leave everyone with one last bit of electro-pop goodness. It is from French-born, part-time local Lou Rebecca, who with Josh Mills on programming and keys, has been turning out wonderfully crafted French disco. Holodeck picked up the pending release and we now have a full shimmy-inducing slice of heaven following the more thoughtfully subdued and bilingual lead single from the S/T EP.

A New Song from the Occasional Flickers

Listen up fans of Belle and Sebastian, and the like; the Occasional Flickers are the new cool kids of Scotland’s pop underground. They employ a similar style, though more straight to the point jangling pop, as opposed to the more grandiose orchestral moves of their forefathers. The finest touch is that you can tap your toes with this rhythm section, driving the track forward as the vocal harmony carries you, the listener. Their new full length, Sleep and the Time in Between is available now via Jigsaw Records, if you want your fancy tickled.

If you’ve been following us over at ATH Records, you’re surely aware of how excited we are for 2018! We’ve got some great releases, but the first will be a 12″ EP for Blushing; they’ve titled the EP Weak. Yesterday DKFM premiered the title track on their shogegaze radio show, and I wanted to make sure you had an ample chance to hear it too, just in case you missed it accidentally. For those just being introduced to the band, you’re in for a treat, as they perfectly mesh the qualities of dream pop and shoegaze’s angular guitars; you’re really going to love it. We’ll be releasing it on January 26th, but you can grab it HEREfrom us right now.

Really Digging This New Fumes

New Fumes is the work Daniel Huffman of Dallas, and honestly, I was sold on the track by the descriptor calling this “weirdo rock.” It should come as no surprise that Daniel’s worked with acts like Tobacco or the Flaming Lips; you can hear the pulsating rhythms of the former and the vocals of the latter throughout this track. It begs for digestion, careful consumption by the listener; I like that it just doesn’t seem safe, almost blissfully abnormal. One thing’s for sure, when Teeming 2, is released by Rad Cult on November 24th, I’ll have my ears ready.

Bill Waters Rules

While we’re about to settle into Fall (yes, even in Texas), it’s time to break out the easy listening. Bill Waters should be someone on your radar, pulling from an era of pop that carries wistful melodies and promises of sunsets on the horizon. You’ll get a slight bounce from the strumming of the guitar, offset by a sinisterly smooth vocal performance. This song is the first off his debut Humid EP, which will handled by Forged Artifacts.

Friday’s just around the bend, and for many of us, we’re wondering what records need to be purchased in order to make it though until next Friday. For my two cents, give Indo Dahns‘ Dreams From Another Coast a whirl. The project is the work of Brama Sukarma, detailing his life and travels, both musically and geographically. Some of the songs seem to have a constructionist perspective, building textured layers atop one another. Then there’s numbers like “Still Dreaming,” fading through your speakers as the daylight dims. Of course, an album like this is always hiding some exuberance that sneaks up on you, but I’ll give you a hint: be sure to listen to “Out That Door.” Created as a reflection on life within the confines of music, you can truly journey along with Brama as you listen along; the album drops tomorrow!

New Music from Half Forward Line

Well, it’s all going to be new music from Half Forward Line, as the group is a brand new project from members of So Cow and Oh Boland. This tune kicks off with cutting guitar chords, pushing toward power-pop stardom, enhanced by a bubbling bass line working under the mix. On the vocals, they seem to have more melody than what one would expect (thinking of past projects), which actually makes the track all the more endearing. It’s guitar pop of the best sort, and there’s eleven other gems waiting for you if you grab their debut, The Back of Mass, over at Jigsaw Records.
