Brand New Dead Leaf Echo + Cheer Up Charlies Show

deadleafechoTomorrow night there’s this great shoegaze event over at Cheer Up Charlies, put on by our friends over at The Nothing Song. The line-up includes local faves like Single Lash, Moving Panoramas, Grivo and more…but it also features Dead Leaf Echo from NYC. And, to celebrate the event, and music in general, the group unleashed a brand new track today…it might just be one of my favorites. It begins with a little upbeat indiepop feel to it, building tension with some hi-hat work and echoed crooning. Eventually it takes on the full realm of pop by unleashing the rest of the percussive kit, and increased vocal presence. At about the 1.30 minute mark the song takes a turn and a wall of guitars squall through your speakers; it leaves quite the impression. So, fall in love with the track, and go see the band tomorrow night here in Austin!

Play This New Dig Tune, Ya’ Dig?

thedigMan, I can only use the word dig so many times in reference to The Dig, but I definitely am enjoying their new single. It’s this shiny bit of indie pop drenched in a playful rhythm and a nice soothing vocal throughout the various verses. There’s this really subtle melodic wash grooving in it too, jumping out with an even larger hook during the chorus to grab the listener. You liked that last Tame Impala LP? You’ll probably find a nice home here. Look for the band’s debut, Bloodshot Tokyo, in February of next year via Roll Call Records.

Melbourne’s Parading Cover Paul Kelly

paradingParading are readying a new record for Lost and Lonesome, but in the meantime they’ve offered a cover of Paul Kelly’s “Big Heart.” Their take utilizes a similar opening moment with the guitar, though there’s more fragility in the vocals. As the song moves along, they muddy it up with more texture than you’ll hear on the classic version. They add in an extra few bars of exploratory sound, which should come as no surprise to folks familiar with the band’s work. It’s Friday, and that means you should just listen to good tunes, so add this one to your list.

Nintendo Pop from Deerful

deerfulI always check in on WIAIWYA, one of my favorite micro-labels overseas. They just put up information on Deerful and the project’s Home EP. For me, it’s great, as the music really sounds exactly like the early Nintendo games, just with the heavenly voice of Emma Witson singing atop. I guess in that, there’s a huge level of familiarity, but also an endearing enchantment that’s let me get sucked in completely. Sometimes, the simplest approach is often the most rewarding, and I feel as if this song proves exactly that!

Unreleased Bonus Track on New Clem Snide ReIssue

clemI’ll be honest here, and admit that I haven’t thought about Clem Snide in ages, though I put “Ice Cube” from 2001’s The Ghost of Fashion on many a mixtape. They seem like one of the bands that impacted so many, then quietly walked off the stage. Luckily, HHBTM Records is reissuing You Were a Diamond, the band’s 1998 masterpiece. The album, and the group, were one of the first group’s that really got me to refocus on the writing of lyrics; I love Eef’s wordplay in everything he’s released. There’s also a raw realness on the record, in a time before reverb and lo-fi were reintroduced as fads. It’s as honest a collection of songs as you’ll find these days, so look for the reissue on November 18th.

Power Pop from Private Interests

Well, if that’s the case, or you just like good tunes, then blast this new one from Private Interests. In under two minutes you get fast paced hooks that ring in your ears (in that good way!). You’ll find the drums steady and pushing the group forward, even leaving an opening for a quick little guitar solo. ablebodyYou know we love Ablebody, in fact, I’m pretty sure we’ve been covering the band for some time, even before we started hyping their new release, Adult Contemporaries. Today, that album is released into the world via Lolipop, so why not offer up another one of the album’s excellent tunes for you to absorb today. You’ll find yourself transported back to the times when R&B began to clash with electronic elements, using twinkling synths and riffs to accent each note of the crooned vocals. Fresh Winter Tunes For You

winterA few years back, we had highlighted Winter after a great performance during SXSW. Since then, they’ve sporadically tossed out tunes, but this new one hits heavy on the indiepop/dreampop, so of course I’m rather stoked. This one’s all shimmering chords and softened vocals, with some synthesized drum loops running behind. It highlights the fact that the band are one to take note of as they prepare to finish up Ethereality, their newest effort…hoping we’ll hear that one next year. For now, just sit back and let the finer notes of this dreamy hit wash over ya’.

Another Gem from Her’s

14633338_1267952883249992_8552119269101912961_oTeam ATH had posted “What Once Was” and “Dorothy” not but a few months ago, Her’s is back with another gem called “Marcel”. If you missed the deets on the band from back then, they are a two-piece, Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading, that met while in school Liverpool. There is a lovely progression and dreamy feel of great pop contrasted with the low-toned vocal that continues the lullaby into a smile. This song is no different and exactly why we like the band.

Pleased to Meet You: Edgar Clinks

edgarYou gotta work hard to find the hidden gems that are out there, which I strive to do every day. I mean, do you really need another song you’ve heard everywhere else? Well, lucky for you, and me, we get to meet Edgar Clinks today…the project of JoeGuadianaand his friends (namely Patrick Thomas). The band’s still pretty new, but this stellar single feel on my radar via a friend, and I think it’s quite something. At times, it has that devil-may-care indifference, but there’s this joyful jam out at the end of the tune that really is like a pop-fan sucker punch; I love it.It appears on the band’s I Live in a Tree These Days, which is available for the NYOP option!
