Watch the New Video from Plush

I was really bummed when The Shes called it quits, but I’ve beenexcited by the new project formed out of the ashes, Plush. The band is working withFather Daughter Records, and this new video sets up the scene for a continuation of great sounds. For most part, the song walks that line of ethereal dream pop, floating along casually. But, as the song furthers itself, you’ll hear some sonic exploration, such as extra distortion and crashing percussive elements. The band employs all sorts of sounds on their recent Please EP…which is available now. Also, look for the band to do a run down the East Coast starting this week.

Latin Love from Y La Bamba

ylabambaIf you find you’re struggling to make it to the end of the week, then perhaps you should take a listen to this new track from Y La Bamba; I promise that you’ll find it uplifting. This track seems to combine elements of beach sound with traditional Spanish guitar working just beneath the mix. Even if you don’t speak Spanish, you’ll find that the core of the song has this vibrancy that’s undeniable; I don’t know, I’m in love with this track. Look for the new album, Ojos del Sol, to come your way on September 9th via Tender Loving Empire.

New Music from Arjuna Genome

arjunagenomeSometimes we take for granted that music can provide catharsis to those who pen the tunes, but, in reading about the upcoming release from Arjuna Genome, Douglas Sweeney isn’t shying away from letting us know how personal his album is. The album, Cynthia, is composed entirely with thoughts of his deceased partner, Cynthia; it’s made up of songs that run like conversations he wishes he could have with her, words he wanted to share. Even in loss, Sweeney has managed to create something brave and beautiful to share with us all…here’s to hoping you’ll take a listen. Cynthia will be out on October 28th via Danger Collective.

Afternoon Joy with Eyes of Love

eyesofloveToday’s one of those days when I could post just about everything that’s come my way. But, that being said, I think a good way to round out my afternoon is with this great track from Andrea Schiavelli and his Eyes of Love project. He’s played in some of my favorite acts like Punks on Mars and Nude Beach, but don’t take that as an expectation for his tunes at the moment. He’s got more of a troubadour feel on these, akin to a bedroom Silver Jews. This number fits on his debut EP, which comes out via Wharf Cat Records on August 26th.

ATX Spotlight: Brand New Jess Williamson

jessJust a few years ago, I raved about Jess Williamson‘s album, Native State, so it’s really exciting to hear that her newest effort, Heart Song, is set for release on November 4th. At play here is the strength of Jess’ voice, which gets some great punctuation by her supporting cast…check the 2 minute mark for a burst of sound that surrounds the calming vocal. I think that’s probably one of the most overlooked pieces about her work; the accents, be they drum rolls or billowing cymbals, are arranged in such a manner that one really does get the sensation that Williamson is truly a Texas artist. Looking forward to the entirety of this new LP.

Show Preview: OMNI @ Hotel Vegas (8.12)

showYou’re all in luck this Friday…tons of shows going on around about town. One of the one’s I’ve got on my radar has OMNI on the bill, who released one of my favorite LPs this year, Deluxe. They’ve got a little bit of proto-punk, spun in their own fashion; I couldn’t find a bad song on the record. But, don’t just let that be reason alone to attend, as two opener’s will also be celebrating the release of their new LPs via 12XU Records: Manhunt and Meet Your Death. This is one of those shows where you show up early, get settled in, then walk out with a handful of great records and fond memories of good old rock n’ roll. See you there! Sample a few tracks below.

Mean Jolene Album Announcement!

MEAN_JOLENE_SALTY_FRONTIn case you haven’t noticed, we’ve got our own little label here at ATH, and we’re really stoked to be working with Mean Jolene for their debut album, Salty. Yesterday, Gold Flake Paint, a reputable place for hits, ran the album’s first single, “Bump the Rump.” It’s perfect timing, as this is a glorified summer hit; you’ll want to turn it up loud, whether you’re at your next pool party or speeding down the highway. If you want to sample the band’s sound live, they’ll be playing at the Flavorsound Class of 2016 Party at Barracuda on Friday…and also appearing at our ATH Records/101X Back to School Bash on August 27th. Stream the song, and preorder the LP from us HERE.

Brand New Music from The Ocean Party

oceanpartyIt’s that time of month where we give you more new music from our favorite Aussie’s, The Ocean Party. The band’s been pretty prolific, getting an album a year out, including last year’s Light Weight, which we helped find a home in the States. Here they are set to release their newest, Restless, and the titular track illustrates how much they’ve grown as a band; the production and accompaniment on this track alone demonstrates what a huge pop group they’ve become. Restless is being handled by Spunk; it will have a worldwide release on September 30th…get ready for another album of great tunes. And! If you’re in the States, look for the band to head our way soon!

Pleased to Meet You: No One Mind

noonemindNo One Mind grew out of previous projects, The Love Language and Birds of Avalon, so the songwriting is familiar, though the sound is entirely new. There’s a brooding sensation in the tones of the guitar/bass as the song pushes forward, taking on a tone of bleakness that relates to the path that led to the formation of the group. I love the way the song fades out with a cool vocal repetition that starts just before the 3 minute mark. Looking forward to what the band brings to the table when they release their eponymous debut on September 9th via Third Uncle Records.

Power Pop Hit from The Persian Leaps

thepersianleapsFans of guitar pop should have a pretty good year, you know, with the next Teenage Fanclub LP heading our way soon. But, there’s still some great power-pop brewing out there that might be a little lesser known, like The Persian Leaps. The Minnesota trio is about to release their Your City Underwater EP via Land Ski Records, and I wanted to give folks a little sample of what’s to come. Think about huge riffs echoing through your speakers, melodious vocals and the sort of pop sensibility we’ve come to expect from bands like Nada Surf. The new EP is being released on September 16th, so you’ve been warned!
