troubleYep…this week is the week.  We’ve got just a few days before we spend our weekend with the folks over at Austin Psych Fest.  I figured it’d be nice to do something a little different for previews this year, rather than just the traditional Top 5 Bands to See route.  So today I decided I’d bring you a highlight of all the acts at the festival that are on Trouble In Mind Records, either past or present.  I love the Chicago-based label, and while they definitely have a slew of psych bands, they’ve also got a reasonably diverse catalogue, all of which is pretty solid.  So, check out below to see the Top 5 TIM bands at the festival. Show Preview: Audacity @ Hotel Vegas (4.29)

tumblr_inline_mj08bavIaS1qz4rgpThe shows just keep coming and coming, and personally, this show at Hotel Vegas is a doozy.  I loved Butter Knife, the latest record from Audacity, and in fact included it in our list of Top 50 Albums of 2013.  It’s a high energy album, making their live show all the same, filled with great riffs and pop sensibility.  But, as if that wasn’t enough, you should also be there to check out the local openers, Loteria, being my particular favorite of the bunch.  They go on just before Audacity, but if you get there early, you’ll also be able to catch The Golden Ghetto and Slash & Spread.  It’s a great little line-up, so if you’re in need of something to do, think about heading to Hotel Vegas.

More New Music from We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves

857885_635641569842995_1298662364_oJust last week I brought you a new tune from We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves, who’ve been hard at work in the study to manage some songs for a release later this year.  They’ve sent us yet another tune, which is what we’re offering up below.  This new tune seems to show a bit of a different approach to songwriting, as they even declare that “this is not a rock song,” meaning that it happens to be something more; it is.  The vocal delivery is very much like spoken word, which has been popularized as of late by bands like Parquet Courts.  It adds an interesting dynamic, which ultimately showcases the band working around traditional pop constructs.  Just another reason to be excited about this Tuesday.

Pleased to Meet You: Colored Lights

coloredlightsI’ve worked really hard to spread the word on the great bands working in Finland; it’s one of my favorite scenes going on at the moment.  So, in line with all that great camaraderie, I was pleased to get an introduction to Colored Lights this past week.  Their sound is similar to countrymen, I Was a King, though they seem to embrace the louder side of power-pop.  I’m pretty excited to catch on to the band, as I love listening to a song where harmonies float just beneath the surface and the guitars have a nice distorted edge to them.  Those of you looking to love that sound will find yourself excited by this act.

Fun Tune from Cheerleader

cheerleaderThere’s probably a lot of people out there who need a good solid energy boost today, right?  This song from Cheerleader is going to fit perfectly into your playlist then.  It’s a mixture of heavy guitar riffs and outright pop exuberance, which inevitably leads to a catchy single that’ll help you through Monday afternoon.  The group is garnering a lot of interest overseas, hitting the road with The Hold Steady for a slew of dates.  Let your hair down and sink your teeth into the delectable pop of this song.

New Single from Eyelid Kid

eyelidThose of you that are fans of Vampire Weekend are really going to enjoy this new single from Eyelid Kid.  The group employs the same sort of pop aesthetic using a nice percussive element to really move the song forward.  But, it’s also in a direct contrast to the way that the vocals are delivered, flowing smoothly from the get-go, and occasionally accented by saxophone squawks.  It’s like easy listening for people that have good tastes, or at least that’s what I like to pretend.  Regardless, it’s a song you’ll definitely enjoy listening to on repeat several times today.

Show Preview: Love Inks @ Mohawk (4.28) – FREE

showoffWhat’s better than a free show at one of Austin’s best venues? A free show with three incredible electronic bands, and that’s precisely what you’ll get if you head out to Mohawk tonight.  First up you’ll get Silk Rodeo; they offer a dark bit of electronica with an ability to build their sound to swelling heights of pop delight.  Then, there’s Whiite Walls; this is perhaps one of Austin’s biggest rising electronic based stars, though they play with a full-on band, making their sets remarkable.  Closing the night will be Love Inks, who affirmed their place in the local music scene with last year’s Generation Club.  I hear they’re working on brand new tunes, so you might get a set full of new tracks for your ears.  In the end, it’s a great local bill, and one you’ll be sore about if you don’t take advantage of this FREE SHOW.

Get Heavy with Zig Zags

zigI felt like I hadn’t really offered up anything brash and rocking in a bit, so when this new track came out last Friday, I knew I’d have to fit in for you.  This is the first single off the new release from Zig Zags; their debut effort already has the seal of approval from Ty Segall, who handled production duties.  The guitars offer a heavy rock lineage, while the vocals reach into that punk meets metal realm.  And, just look at the rad artwork that’s associated with this single; I can’t wait to see what’s on the cover of their self-titled debut.  That record will be released on June 3rd by In the Red Records, but you can jam this one all day long.

Show Review: Future Islands @ Mohawk (4.23)

Upload Future Islands 20140423222153In a week filled with shows, it was perhaps one of the more anticipated sets of the week, especially with Future Islands seemingly springing to larger popularity via their performance on some late night talk show.  I was a little bummed that people didn’t quite make it out early enough to catch the openers, Knifight, but perhaps that will help keep them our little secret for just a bit longer.

Nice Bit of Pop from Easy

easyYou’ve got to start off Monday’s rather gently, especially after all the music fans in Austin endured an incredible week of shows.  So , in lieu of that concept, I bring you this tune from Easy, a rad little act from LA.  They craft this careful pop music that rises and falls, often with orchestral touches and changes in rhythm throughout the track.   Personally, I dig how they speed things down, then revert back to a gentler pace; it’s a good little effect, and one that allows for the band’s songwriting to be put in full display. Expect to hear more from these guys going forwards.
